Gen. Rommel's Mighty Unit Emporium - A Unit Preview Thread

Here's a belated nudge for the zouaves.

As to why the zouaves were unique, I second the comments above. Wikipedia says regarding the "esprit" aspect "From 1863 onward, Zouave uniforms were often used to reward Union army regiments for exceptional battlefield performance."

Plus, their uniform had some special practicality. Here's Wikipedia: " The Zouave uniform was better suited for warm climates and rough terrain. The loose pantaloons allowed for greater freedom of movement than trousers, while the short jacket was much cooler than the long wool blouse worn by most armies of the time. One of the reasons for the smaller number of Zouave units in the U.S. and Europe was the expense of the specialized uniform over that of mass-produced uniforms of a single color and cut."

There's an amusing scene in "Glory" where the protagonists encounter some Free Blacks who are (IIRC) Louisiana Tigers (Zouave unit from New Orleans). Their patois is barely understandable to the Union soldiers. The Tigers' are incensed that the others would associate them with slaves; they are proud of their Creole heritage and hold themselves independent, even to some degree from the command structure beyond their regiment.

This is a unit that could find a home in the army of many civs in many mods. A civ-color version would therefore be useful as well. Wikipedia again: "Some Zouave regiments wore a fez with a colored tassel (usually yellow, blue, green, or red) and turban, a tight fitting short jacket (some without buttons), a wide ten-foot long sash, baggy pantaloons or "chasseur" trousers, white leggings, and a short leather cuff for the calf, called jambieres." So any of the fez, sash or chasseurs would be suitable areas for civ color. The Lousiana Tigers wore striped trousers - there's another possibility.

Small sneak peak...

thats very good.

No, no. Keep him the way he is now. You can always make a somewhat different version (with a fez, if you will) for France. I like the fact that this guy has the US kepi.

Looks really good!
But could you make him more like this, so we can use him for France, North Africa, and the US?

Yeah, it's like TG says, I can still make the Zouve (as well as the standard Union and Confederate soldier units). I just wanted to show what I was spending my time doing in between doing animations and rendering. You know, doing that stuff hours on end, I eventually get bored and will just start a brand new model to entertain myself. I for one love the way the "devils" turned out.

Oh btw, for anyone who noticed in the above picture, the red pants are passing through the tunic. I will be remaking that part with the kilt figure using transparency maps so it will essentially look the same (if not better), but will then let me control some morphs so that the pants will not pass through the kilt anymore.

Looking good, Gen. Rommel.... BTW, where did you get that kepi hat prop? I've been looking for such a thing all over the place, but never have been able to find anything.

Also, since Blue Monkey brought up "Glory," I'd like to add that my hometown (Mercersburg, PA) had the largest population of free blacks prior to the Civil War, and a majority of the 54th Massachusetts was made up of people from Mercersburg.... That movie was required veiwing at my High School during American History class.

Yes you can, I think you should add a Louisiana Tiger also with a straw hat and striped pants to the zouave line up though.
I haven't seen a picture on-line of them with straw hats. In all of them they wear a chéchia (sort of a cross between a fez & a beret with a long tassel).
As in this painting
Or on this doll
Also in this photo of a reenactor
& a close up of a chéchia from the same site
This is also one of the styles of headgear worn by French zouaves.

Strawhat
They mustered into service in their old filibuster uniforms–off-white cotton drill trousers, white canvas leggings, red flannel battle shirts and broad-brimmed, low-crowned straw hats. Once enlisted, the men also wrote provocative slogans–such as ‘Lincoln’s Life or a Tiger’s Death,’ ‘Tiger by Nature’ or ‘Tiger in Search of Abe’–on their hat bands.
Of course I have seen allot of variation with fez's and chéchia's also. So there can be much for the unit maker to interpret as to their wishes.

Yeah, BadKharma. One $5000 dirty straw hat on ebay is the gripping hand of evidence. Isn't that the same place where someone sold a haunted toaster?

:joke: :p

In actuality, that probably bears as much weight, if not more, as a reenactor's interpretation. & as you say, there's plenty for a unit maker or two to choose from.

Yes that is my main point. You can really mix things up allot which is a good thing for unit creators. BTW did you know Robert E Lee supported a unit of Confederate Pikemen during the Civil War:eek:
One attempt to resurrect the pike as a primary infantry weapon occurred during the American Civil War when the Confederate States of America planned to recruit twenty regiments of pikemen in 1862. In April 1862 it was authorized that every Confederate infantry regiment would include two companies of pikemen
I would say luckily for the poor soldiers that would have had to be in those units they were never feilded.

Dont ask where I got these because I don't know about half the stuff I download for research. I think they may prove useful for coloring.

Looking at the art Wyrmshadow posted, I notice that Legionnaires' pants would be a good place for civ-color.

The amazing thing is that he held up so much weight for so long without getting a hernia!:crazyeye:

But wouldn't pikemen have made for better pickets?:p

Ahem.. I'd like to see some updates. It's very dissapointing when I give away free toys and then I don't see them being used.

Sorry for the lack of updates (and posts for that matter) guys! I was in London for a week and then Malta the next, so I've not been home at all. And now I have to learn for my last exam (verbal) in two days. But after that, I can dedicate time again towards unit-making...I plan to get the Spartan pack done first (ran into some trouble with the Germanic warrior and am now rather doing the Spartans) as well as posting some unit models using the pics you guys offered. EVERYTHING will be made!!!!!!
