GENERAL INDFORMATION
”What is this?”, you might be asking yourself. Well, it’s a C3C mod about Danish history. So if you’re Danish you’re probably already rather sure that you’ll be downloading this. If you’re not Danish this mod might not be that interesting to you – but I have tried to make it playable for non-Danes. The amount of Danish in the mod is limited and is always translated. So if you’re interested in history and Civ3, there’s really no reason for you not to give this mod a chance.
Now that is clarified. Your next question is probably what “Gesta Danorum” means. It’s not Danish – it’s Latin for “The Deeds of the Danes”. This was the name of a book about Danish history written by Saxo Grammaticus in the 12th century and it’s one of the most famous books of the Danish Middle Ages. If anybody thinks the name is too long, just abbreviate it to “GDDD”.
Anyhow, that’s enough about the name of the mod. The mod itself is the first C3C version of a similar PtW mod with the less than impressing name “Danization” (INSERT LINK). The conversion from PtW to C3C and the expansion, improvement and testing of the mod is a project on which I have spent more time than I like to think of. So even though many things could still have been changed, it was time to post what I have made so far. Specially considering that I will not have much time for modding in the future.
But why did I make this mod? One reason was to increase my understanding of how to mod Civ3 before starting other projects. Another one was my interest in Danish history – I simply wanted to learn more about it and one way of doing that was to research for a mod. I should probably mention that this is not some kind of Nationalist project. I know that using the national flag like I do is something which only Nationalists to in other countries, but in my country it’s a very normal thing to do. Actually I was surprised that nobody else has made comparable mods about their countries. The only slightly Patriotic thing I’ve done is this mod is to use the Danish “Danmark” instead of the English “Denmark”. The difference is small, but it sounds so much better.
Just two more things: 1) This version hasn’t been tested much, so there might be some bugs and mistakes. I apologize in advance and hope that other Civfanatics will help me test this. 2) If some of you want to post something in Danish, please do. But remember to include a translation for those who do not understand it.
So what have been changed in this mod? Almost everything. It’s very much like the original Civ3 – it takes us from the dawn of civilization to modern times. But instead of telling the story about the entire human race it focuses on a single country (one of the advantages is that the Zulus will not be building the Oracle and the Americans will not be running around with axes – no Wonder will be built more than a few hundred kilometers away from its place of origin).
DETAILS
As already mentioned, everything has changed. The mod lets you play as one of 31 Danish leaders on one of three maps of Danmark (standard, small and multiplayer) or a random map. The 31 leaders govern 31 Danish regions – each one of them with different strategic challenges. Play on one of the larger islands for an easy game, try to survive as one of the 15 neighboring civs of Jylland – or fight back the constant amphibious attacks as one of the smaller island tribes.
Below you can see the 31 civs. Each of them has their own flag (thanks to NeoT) based on the Danish flag but with the civ color replacing the original red. Screenshot at bottom of page.
Another important thing is the new tech tree. Below you can see the first of the ages, the Viking Age. Screenshot at bottom of page.
As you can see there are many new buildings – including more than 50 Great Wonders and 15 Small Wonders. All terrain, govts, units etc. have been changed too. Screenshot at bottom of page.
But one of the most important changes is the new victory conditions. The land and population needed to win a domination victory has been reduced because of the large map, the UN victory has been properly renamed – but most importantly: the Spaceship Victory has been changed completely. Instead of trying to colonize Alpha Centauri, your new mission is to build a “perfect” society on Earth – with a strong economy, a fair social structure, a good environment and free and equal education, healthcare etc. for everybody. Improving units are another thing that has been given some attention. I have – of course – given modern units a HP bonus, trying to avoid that annoying Tank vs. Spearman problem. But I have also experimented with different kinds of land units, divided into three categories: Fast/Blitz (from the ancient Riders to Modern Tanks), Slow/Amphibious (from Vikings to Commando) & Slow/Defense (from Spearmen to Home Guards). There are also some archers and ancient non-amphibious offensive infantry, but they all upgrade to units in the former categories. Another change is faster naval and air units. Danmark is a lot smaller than normal civ worlds (the largest Danmark I’ve seen on any other civ map was less than 10x10 squares), so it would make sense to increase unit movement speed – I mean, what kind of aircraft wouldn’t be able to cross Danmark in just a few hours? Because of that, there will be no more defeating the enemy’s entire air force by launching a surprise attack on their air bases. They will be far away from where the infantry is fighting. You will also have to watch out for surprise attacks from the sea – you will quickly learn to block the narrow straits on the maps. Furthermore, there are no nuclear weapons.

Though I may have forgotten something, that’s all for now. I would like to thank everybody that posted about the PtW mod and helped me criticize the ideas for this mod. Special thanks to those of you who were really patient and kept waiting and waiting and waiting (you know who you are). Also special thanks to all the graphic makers here at the civfanatics.com (credits list included in download), specially NeoT for making the flags and utahjazz7 for making the renaissance partisan unit that I requested.
By the way, would any of you be interested in some multiplayer?
Edit: Yoda Power posted some in game screenshots in post 14 & 15. Thanks.
