The Republican candidate for Montana’s congressional seat slammed a Guardian reporter to the floor on the eve of the state’s special election, breaking his glasses and shouting, “Get the hell out of here.”

Ben Jacobs, a Guardian political reporter, was asking Greg Gianforte, a tech millionaire running for the seat vacated by Ryan Zinke, about the Republican healthcare plan when the candidate allegedly “body-slammed” the reporter.

“He took me to the ground,” Jacobs said by phone from the back of an ambulance. “This is the strangest thing that has ever happened to me in reporting on politics.”

Jacobs subsequently reported the incident to the police. Gianforte’s campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Audio of the abortive interview recorded by Jacobs captures the altercation, and appears to reference previous questioning from another Guardian reporter. “I’m sick and tired of you guys,” Gianforte said. “The last guy who came here did the same thing. Get the hell out of here. Get the hell out of here. The last guy did the same thing. Are you with the Guardian?”

“Yes! You just broke my glasses,” Jacobs replied.

“The last guy did the same damn thing,” Gianforte said.

“You just body slammed me and broke my glasses,” Jacob said.

“Get the hell out of here,” Gianforte yelled.

The altercation took place at Gianforte’s campaign headquarters in Bozeman, Montana. Gianforte was in a side room with a local television news crew when Jacobs attempted to ask his question, according to Jacobs.

“I decided there was no harm in asking one question, and the worst thing that could happen was they would tell me to go to hell,” Jacobs said.

Jacobs’s account was partially confirmed by BuzzFeed News reporter Alexis Levinson, who wrote on Twitter that she had been in an adjacent room during the incident.

“This happened behind a half closed door, so I didn’t see it all, but here’s what it looked like from the outside – Ben walked into a room where a local tv crew was set up for an interview with Gianforte. All of a sudden I heard a giant crash and saw Ben’s feet fly in the air as he hit the floor. Heard very angry yelling (as did all the volunteers in the room) – sounded likeGianforte...”

Levinson later tweeted Gianforte left the event without speaking and that the Gallatin County Sheriffs department was taking witness statements.

Gallatin County sheriff Brian Gootkin confirmed to the Guardian that his department was “currently investigating” the incident and declined to comment further.

The special election has attracted national attention, and spending has reached $17m as the race has tightened. Democrat Rob Quist is a political novice and folksinger. Quist declined to comment on the altercation when approached by reporters on Wednesday.

Gianforte is a tech mogul who mounted an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2016.

On 28 April, Jacobs reported on Gianforte’s financial ties to Russian companies that have been sanctioned by the US. Gianforte’s wealth is estimated at between $65m and $315m.

This is where the GOP is at now. Bodyslamming people for asking questions they don't like.

So I guess if he wins there'll be another election soon, after he is convicted of assault.

I am genuinely worried that a GOP politician will call for acts of violence along partisan lines at this point and whether or not there is actual follow through, nobody in the GOP will rebuke them. In fact they will say it was a joke.

Should make for some fun on-camera questions for GOP lawmakers tomorrow.

Anyone wanna bet that Gianforte had gotten some terrible polling news earlier in the day, perhaps right before that? Hard to picture him losing control like that unless he was losing.

It's the reporter who broke the story that this dude is involved with Russian companies sanctioned by the US.

Don't count the GOP out of the 2018 elections yet. All of us need to do all we can to get them out of government everywhere we can.

Quist is for the maintaining of Obamacare. Gianforte has said privately he's for Trumpcare, but his public position is that he wants to wait for the CBO scoring. It finally came out showing 23 million Americans will lose their healthcare. When the guardian reported asked about this, Gianforte went berserk and attacked him.

Gianforte's position is that he asked the "aggressive" reporter to leave and the reporter refused.
The audiotape of the incident disproves this.
Gianforte's position is that both men fell to the floor.
The audiotape has the sound of one man hitting the floor, after which the reporter exclaims, "You body slammed me....and broke my glasses."

Lock Him Up!

Soon the chant is going to require more words so we know who specifically it is talking about.

They're not used to getting pressured by constituents like they have been lately. Trump getting elected has gotten people to pay more attention. That's the main positive of the 2016 results. You guys have seen this one haven't you?
The sad part is that a lot of these GoP congressmen have been running on the repeal and replace Obamacare pretty much ever since the ACA passed. They've been promising something better for years and now that the ball is in their hands they're fumbling it in an embarrassingly bad way.

I'd feel worse for the GOP if there was any sense of the capability of looking inward. They won an election, hold both houses of congress and seemingly think they have carte blanche to be as awful as they always wanted to be. Even worse that they projected so much of what they wanted to do and people couldn't see it.

So, I'm a bit tired of TYT's editorializing, since I find that I have a more nuanced position than the one they push.

But the clip of the actual interview begins at 0:40. And it's pretty telling. The underlying debate "if people outside your district aren't allowed in your townhall then why do you accept donors from outside your district?" is a really, really good one.

I mean, I can easily see why you'd want to limit your townhall to people within your district, duh. But the other question is a really good one.

Attacking the media seems to be very popular with the deplorables though

The totally shocking thing here is that other than the victim the only media in the room were a team from Faux News, and they didn't cover for the Republican. The world is slowly tipping onto its head.

Iam dont think Fox new is not covering the attack for partisian politics reasons
Its much more likely they are likely are in the center of an rating exclusive scandal and are pushing it for ratings
