Ali, if you please, what are the numbers in parentheses? Thx.

Agni.

The number in parantheses is the number of items in the left hand panel when you meet their representative. It indicates their power rating. So in the example above English were Weak, German Inadequate, Japanese Moderate, and Chinese Strong. This info is helpful in deciding who to demand tribute from and who to offer alliance to.

Finished my first game at deity level. It went not bad at all. Huts were not bad. A lot of nomads and advanced tribes. At the end I made the mistake not to build mass transit in time. This caused global warming and less food for my cities.

I played till +1000 over the weekend and till +1380 this morning. I stayed in Monarchy till +500 and got frustrated with my slow progress. I eventually decided against conquest and for the space ship and switched to Republic shortly after +500. I continued to contain Mongols while expanding. I have filled out the top band and have a few cities in the middle band. I have been trading heavily with the German, some with Mongols, and just started a few with the Japanese. I hope to one day trade with the Chinese.

IMO this GOTM calls for making lots of boats - to colonize the middle bands, mostly in the BC years. Then even more boats, to carry crusaders [if playing for conquest] and vans for overseas trade [whether playing for conquest or for landing].

IMO this GOTM calls for making lots of boats - to colonize the middle bands, mostly in the BC years. Then even more boats, to carry crusaders [if playing for conquest] and vans for overseas trade [whether playing for conquest or for landing].

I agree with you Peaster. But the biggest problem is that you have to discover that there is a middle band (the most games don't have such a strange landmasspatern). In the beginning I build boats on the northsite of the upper band. When I noticed that it was a band I disbanded them quickly.

Besides what Magic_gorter mentioned there is the problem that you need two entirely separate fleets: one above the middle band and one below it. Right now I have only one boat below the middle band. But then again, I make far fewer boats than is typical around here.

I kept expanding in the upper band till I filled it up. I could have and perhaps should have stopped that effort and concentrated more on the middle band to trade with offshore Japanese and Chinese. The Chinese are so far away that I have not bothered trading with them yet. I should send a boat out that way.

I didn't say going south was easy :)

But IMO it should be a priority for most game plans on this map. The northerly starting location is a clue to expand southwards asap. Also, IIRC a little black-clicking shows the northern sea is not likely to help with that. Once you have Marco's, get some AI maps, and explore a little, the pattern becomes much clearer. IMO most shields should go into settlers and boats headed south from that point on, except for a few crusaders and/or vans as needed for your specific game plan.

My problem is that I do a lot of planing, perhaps too much, right at the begining and not enough in mid game. I did a lot of black clicking at the begining and found #2, #3, ... but because my continent was 1 I could not tell what is land and what is water.

I should have stopped expansion right after Marco specially given how little real time I had left.

I don't remember my black-clicking, or early map thoughts, very well anymore, but I think Tim's remark is on target. It strongly suggests that the northern sea won't help you go south (though going east-west quickly could be useful).

The straight coastline is a clue that this is not a random map, and it probably should have prompted us all to do some serious black-clicking. But I didn't quite catch on to the puzzle until I crossed two oceans and found the English there - still on continent #1 !

+1771 Space ship arrives

1. In retrospect I wish a snap shot, even a tiny one, of the map was revealed. Before Apollo did it I still had no good idea of the shape of the portion of the #1 continent underneath the English.

2. Major replaning for the game after Marco is a very good idea.

3. Recently it was reported by Peaster, and concurred by others, that discovery of Environmentalism reduces population pollution. I tried looking for it in this game and could not see the effect. It could be because my cities were too big for the effect to be noticable as many of my cities were around size 20.

4. I tried something new in this game: A space ship launch without building any factories. I tyically build factories everywhere soon after they are available. But some amazingly fast results by Peaster in a recent GOTM made me try this approach. As a consequence of this approach I gave no priority to Hoover Dam wonder and only built it after launch for score. That was a big mistake as pollution became the major threat to my empire near the end and I even got the dreaded warning about imminent onset of Gloabl Warming. Fortunately, I managed to avert the disaster but it took drastic measures. (The shield production in every city with even a single yellow triangle was reduced till there were none. It was kept that way till Mass Transit and somethimes a Recycling Center came on line.) Cleaning up the pollution kept my Engineers so busy they could not do anything else. What I forgot was that Hoover Dam reduces pollution from shield production whether you have a factory or not.

5. Another first in this game was a less than full space ship. I only launched three sets of modules to end the game a few turns earlier due to constraints of real time. I should have launched an even smaller ship but most of the recent playing was marathon sessions starting around 10pm and lasting into early morning hours when I am short on foresight and planing.

6. I filled up the top band and 80% of the middle band. I had a few cities below the middle band but nothing significant. 80% of the top band was connected by a rail network.

7. Germans and Mongols both got very aggressive near the end. So I ended up wiping both of them out with a small army. Germans were mostly bought off after the fall of Berlin. A couple of deliveries to Japanese would easily pay for a German city. Mongols fought valiantly with a very small force. This one fighter plane of theirs killed at least half a dozen of my units. Karakorum fell right before the space ship reached its destination.

8. I traded so much with Germans many of their cities had no demand left. Same with Mongols, but I left them with only 2 cities. I traded heavily with Japanese but not much with Chinese due to the extra distance. I did hardly any trades with the English.

Because of personal issues..and work related issues , I did not finish the game on time.
Managed to launch a 40.000 ship , but made several blunders due to the time frame....Japanese launched a 10.000 Ship and will land 2 turns after I did...was a close game
I just submited my game , ( Today is Thursday the 22nd ) and I understand if it does not qualify.
The last 50 turns or so....took me several hours ( ie ....DAYS )
It was a fun Game ....now I am ready to download Game 73 and play it ASAP

I won by conquest in 1857 AD. It took me a lot of time and I had the limit of cities.
