Gotm24-Korea Speculation thread

My guess is archipelago with a strong neighbour, why not China. The situation may be a bit like GOTM22, where Russia was the strong favorite enemy of the Scandinavians just like in real life. The starting location will probably not be as good as in GOTM22, though. But cracker once said something not so positive about the outcome of GOTM14 (the hardest GOTM I've seen) so I think he will save the most difficult games for the in-between medal play games.

The terror of the game will be when/if we spot Japanese Battleships and recycled kamikaze aircraft. Balancing a battle with China and Japan could be a huge challenge.

Enjoying the wild speculation as always,
Megalou

Well time to deposit my tuppence.

I think that as others have said, china, Russia and Japan are almost givens in this game, also Mongols and maybe India?

Or are we gonna play this as North or South Koreans?

If so then the Other Korea could also be a player?

I would also like to see new resources in this game of tobacco and ginseng, as the civilopedea says, these were crucial in enabling Korea to Industrialise.

Terrain: peninsula, hilly with only few rivers, small islands off coast

Luxury: Ginseng

Bonus resource along coast: Squid

Rivals: China, Japan, Russia, America

Hilly seems a bit of an understatement. According to korea.net :

Depends on how you define mountains..... I suppose for the Dutch even molehills might be considered as mountains!! :crazyeye:

I've been to Korea quite a few times and they are definitely mostly hills around 800 - 1000 m as far as I remember. I climbed them by the dozen, like one per day (before breakfast!!)

Since I'm Dutch:

Molehills are considered as grassland wreckers.

In Switzerland, where I've been a dozen times (family living over there), you can find real mountains. In comparison to Switzerland Holand is just as flat as a panecake!! :D

Back to the thread:

Never played as Korea before, because the civ specific abilities don't work for me. I must have at least Industrious.

I also think that China, Japan and Russia will be the most likely opponants near to Korea. Which al have 'nice' UU's to play against. :(

But than again, that's one of the challenges and if we indeed get the terrain we are all speculating on, this GOTM will be a difficult one indeed.

I wish you all good luck and greetings from 'The Panecake Country'

I hope this one will be easier than the few ones before...

There could be new resources.:) Squids could be cool.

Ha! When I read the paper I almost fell off my chair!

I spent most of my life among 'gently rolling hills', and more recently close to some nice mountains; I have lived in Holland for a while and though *it* was 'damn flat'. But Kansas... brrrr...

EDIT: I haven't got the foggiest idea on what the game will taste like. It would be nice if it had to be an OCC, though.

OCC? Cool suggestion! Is there a OCC win award?

And this would be the
Sad Old Bar Steward Award for Ignorance in the Face of Company?

I would like to see a 10CC, this would force the Koreans to remain a small enclosed nation and would give a more Korean view IMHO.

Also if we were talking about awards, could we have a Mother Theresa award?

A game in which you started no wars?

Melifluous

It could be possible. You'd just have to get the others declare war on you;)

How about a 7CC? (playin' with numbers)

I'm expecting few rivers and many hills, especially for Korea, so it will have to find alternative ways to explore its scientific trait.

Probably Monarch or Emperor. It would by a nightmare for me to fight against Mongols, China and Japan on deity, especially with a civ whose UU is the H'wacha...

And, if the military conditions of the map don't force usage of artillery, I'm surely going for wonder GA.

"One wonder can start a GA, IIRC. At least the Egyptians can get a GA by building only the pyramids"

Well, I tried recently to play as Koreans, build the Great Library (using GL) and .... nothing happened:confused:
Maybe you have to built a wonder "brick by brick"?

Wrt amphibious assault by AI - I have been subjected to a few good ones - once two galleys with four berserkers took my town!

As stated previously, the Egyptians are a special case where the Pyramids fits both their traits. There are a few other similar situations, but there isn't a single wonder that matches Korea's Commercial/Scientific combo.

My guess...

Terrain & Geography: isolated with rugged terrainand productive valleys which are good for defense.

Opponents: 5. China, Japan, Mongols, Russians and one European (well maybe a "new" world civ)

NB. to the post that stated we don't get a new AI civ until we play it, we had the Spanish in the Ottomans game which came before playing Spain.

Difficulty: definately not Monarch.

Other thoughts:

a new luxury(ies)...

the general situation will pit us in an isolated, rugged but furtile area. The terrain will be good for defense (imagine the Hwachas on hill tops and hill towns). Limited land access routes to our kingdom.

Trade routes will be near us and we will be surrounded by more aggressive civs.

I really like the speculation that this will be a wonder-driven GA game. I thinnk that this would be a great learning experience and would pose a challenge (with the limits above) for even seasoned players. No world conquests by 10AD.

Hopefully I will be able to find the time to complete gotm XXIV.

Maybe the Tournament players must play a OCC? It would be cool. Or perhaps a domination victory with the Koreans :D

This game will be a lot of fun, as I've never played or seen Korea in a game before.

Gingerbreadman,
