GR22 - AWDG vs 30 Civs (try 2 of ?)

I forgot to mention that someone finished the Lighthouse, so one less wonder to cascade.

Pre-Turn
send the settler to another possible spot, we need more towns, order another as well

IT no attacks in the west, only intrusions, but Persia is heading for the east and that's no good.
Babylon loses a sword, Copan riots due to occupied tiles

1. 330BC
we need to clear the enemy units,
attack 2 horses that retreat, then clear them with. Mop up 2 more units with an army
clear horse and archer in the east..try and cover exposed units as best as I can. [7-0]

MM and get CI to 15spt

IT as expected we lose 3 units and 2 horses retreat and block tiles, very tiring [8-3]

2. 310BC
mop up 4 horse and shift an army east to help out with Persia immortals that will attack soon
found a new city
clear hill next to Palenque of 2 horses [14-3]

IT at Bonampak we go 2-1 against swords [16-4]
Iro's finish Great walls, lucky it is only 300shields, we still need 5 turns for the Glib

3. 290BC
clear 3 intruder horses and 1 on a hill with army and get mighty lucky in the process
to create another army just in time to repel the immortal flood in the north
fill army in Tikal with 2 units, take out an archer there and move as to fill completely

take out another horse and manage to take out that Persian settlement in our hinterland
[23-4]

IT Immortals split into 2 groups
we go 7:2 on defense this time, could have been worse [30-6]

4. 270BC
need to use 2 armies to start clearing immortals
defeat a total of 5 units all around, one army badly injured, losing 1 JT [35-7]

IT The Persian units in the northeast will be trouble as they intrude the land
we get a tile pillaged, Babylon suicide a sword and we gain another leader [36-7]

5. 250BC
rush pentagon in Largatero
take out 2 stray units, need to trick the Persians, empty nearby town Yaxchilan and take out 3 of their units
[41-7]

IT we go 4:1 on defense, at least all armies are intact
ToA is finished by Carthage, now the danger of a cascade is very real, we have 2 more turns to go
[45-8]

6. 230BC
take out 2 units, armies need to heal and we might get pillaged [47-8]

IT we get badly pillaged, and go 8:3...there are simply too many units everywhere
Babylon has stacks coming in... [55-11]

7. 210BC
found city on the tip of the land
try to heal 2 armies so we can strike again and clear the land
take out 2 units next to Largatero and 2 immortals [59-11]

IT more pillaging and I can' do nothing about it
we go 4:1 against Babylon [63-12]

the good news of the set
gr22210kk4.jpg

8. 190BC
try to start taking out those pillager and succeed with 2 in the flat west
the east is more difficult, block some spears from messing up our land [65-12]

IT as if things aren't bad enough, he Celts show up with their UU
no enemy attacks but penetrates our land deeper...this is quite frustrating I admit
we get all AA techs and have iron connected for a lucky break

9. 170BC
need to clear 3 immortals but redline an army...and another is still red..this might be doom
[68-12]

IT we miraculously survive this and lose 1 JT, beating 4 units
more units moving deeper into our land [72-13]

10. 150BC
squeeze in another city..but now we got no more space
clear 1 sword, use sword to clear spear and promptly lose it, then defeat it and an archer as well
take out 2 more units, but need to leave some spears alone [77-14]

the pretty tough situation
gr22170yr2.jpg

by the way, we do have 1 settler in the east, we might want to squeeze in another town on the northern shore to make defenses easier.

I did not MM in the end, please do so and change builds to swords if needed. They will be better for us now that we have tonnes of slaves already.

Good work getting three cities down in the midst of that chaos. :goodjob:

The warrior in Camelburger can't reach Piedras Negras in one turn, due to the river, so we should move the swordsman in Yax towards PN or we'll be helpless if the Persians move in that direction.

If we add a swordsman to the three-unit army in Yax (but not the swordsman already there, for the reason above) most of the army's attacks will be stronger, and it'll only cost us slaves we don't really need.

lurker's comment: WTG on getting the Great Library. that has to help overall

This is definitely a check every day to see if they are still alive SG.

This is what can aptly be called 'stretched to the limit' , Planning to start offensives in a direction?

Planning to start offensives in a direction?
I'm sure they will have plans in that direction eventually, provided they live long enough to implement them.
Great read guys. :goodjob:

Nice job ThERat, we got the things we wanted from that turn. GLB, third army and even Iron and as an added bonus the Pentagon, which along with the 4 unit will be needed to kill some of these units.

I feel better about having to spend so many turns using slaves in the hinter as one of those hills had the iron. Glad that town is gone they planet.

That makes me up, but I cannot play before the weekend. If that is ok I got it.

Now that we are not so tied down to defend every single tile in Palenque, things should get better. Pillaging wouldn't be that much trouble for us if we protect our workforce properly. We can improve tiles very fast.

As for expansion, we should try and get the dyes. Also, the Persian and Celtic UUs are terrible. It would be nice to strip both off iron. Maybe, if we can afford, send out 1 JT army to pillage both of them starting with Persia.

Not sure which is more troublesome for us, Immortals or 2 move swords. The thing about the Celt unit is that it can retreat. I tend to under value Immortals as they can be attacked and neutralized.

If you can restrict the number of them that get to attack, they are just expensive spears. GS units are the same on defense, but their movement makes them more dangerous. You have to be concerned about a lot more tiles that they can reach.

They also can move and then pillage, that is why I worried about horses. I was afraid they would move and pillage.

by the way, I think Carthage with its powerful UU might really be an option in case we fail here

One civ I rarely use, but should be good for a game like these is Rome. You have 3 attack and 3 defense unit very soon. They are military, so cheap barracks and that is great. They are commercial, so start with Alpha.

IBT : a Gallic Sword, Celtic Horse and an Immortal suicide on Palenque (3-0)

a Babylonian sword is brought down at Lagartero (82-17)

The Dutch land another spear at Cameltoe

9) 30AD : we do not have enough cities to convert the leader into a fourth army, we are two cities short and no chance to build two cities this turn

army kills the landed Dutch sowrd and spear at Cameltoe (84-17)

reinforce Tikal as best as I can, but 7 gallics will be able to attack there ; it might be 3 swords defending against 7 gallics
4 gallics and 7 Dutch swords will be able to attack Palenque as well as the 7 gallics that can attack Tikal or Palenque

IBT : Tikal falls
it is close, but we hold Palenque and Copan

I could not count all the kills and losses, though.

we get invention

10) lose an army trying to get back Tikal, build another army with the spare leader

I leave it to the next player to attack or reinforce in the battle area. I am unsure how to handle the situation there.

I just thought we have it under control now and we could begin to think of an advance when all these units showed up in our West. :(
