GRAND OPENING: CivFanatics File Database

You guys actually can link to the download link directly, if you want to -- just copy the dowload link provided by the file database (the big link at the top of the entry with URL that ends in &act=down. This way files still go thru the database and # of downloads will still get counted.

Though people can't rate your file if they don't visit the file entry page...
Oh, that's good to know. 'Cause the thing that was bugging me is that basically it added an extra click to the download process, but if we can do this then it's all good. :)

:hmm:

I guess I copied the wrong link.

EDIT: Very odd indeed. I just checked, and the link is right, no errors. (and the dl worked for me)

But I updated it anyways. So try again.

Ah - found the button now. Had a sligh mix up with some uploads.

Instead, can I ask if it's possible to make the author default to the uploader if left blank?

Because he realized that I did all of it for him. (and I can delete my files, so... there is a way.)

Well he's deleted all of the units he's uploaded. I would suggest that we ask TF to move the uploads of his units that you did to The Great Apple.

Ok. (you mean the sig links, and the unit uploader name, right?)

I don't know exactly. TF said that he could move a persons uploads. Don't know exactly what will happen.

TF, how about allowing links for pictures? I don't want to reupload all my pics, so now I just include them in the text part instead.[/QUOTE]
Unless I'm misunderstanding you, you can already do this (you're referring to |IMG|direct url for image|/IMG|, right?).

He means the thumbnail picture. It doesn't allow you to link to a picture you have to re upload it.

No, for thumbnail the system needs an image and make a thumbnail from it. The thumbnail makes your entry stand out much more on the category listing page, so it's worth the time to re-upload it. Each image upload takes just seconds.

About the uploader, Plotinus can re-assign a file's uploader too.

Thats to bad.

I asked this question in the CivIII C&C forum, but didn't get a clear response. The question is in response to .zip files being disallowed by the EasyUpload feature. Plotinus suggested that I try here. So, here goes.

To begin with, Kinboat created a "paperdoll" model for Poser that I and many others use to make CivIII units. I've been creating and uploading props and clothing figures to use with the "paperdoll" that other unit creators can download.

But, I don't know what to do with the uploads (.zip files) in the new File Database. There's no catergory for them. CivIII Other Graphics was suggested, but these are not graphics. I don't want to place them there. I would prefer to simply use the EasyUpload System as I have been doing, but I guess that probably won't fly. So, where do these Poser files belong.

Also, I'm a little disgruntled about the listings for Top Contributors to the File Database. Honestly, I feel that the author should get listed for the number of files not the uploader--I realize that the author doesn't need to be a registered member, and that would cause problems. Still, I've been making units for almost four years, and I have a total of 88 units--all added to the File Database. But compare that number to someone who has spent a week or so uplaoding other people's files.

Now, I'm not concerned with the Database Helpers Club and receiving the larger avatar or pm limit increase. That's a separate issue, as far as I'm concerned. Rewarding people for helping out is fine. But, I think that the Top Contributors list should reflect the people who have authored the most files, not those who have taken other people's files and added them to the File Database.

I'm glad to hear that threads can give download links themselves, rather than just linking to the registry in the Database. I don't like sending people to another page to get them to download something. But, I agree with zulu9812 that the Database will discourage people from visiting the forums.

In the beginning I was wondering about the "reasonability" of this feature also. I wonder how different the current list would look, if the system showed the #-of-files-per-artist rather than #-of-files-per-uploader... I think that the #-of-files-per-artist would be more informative than the current system, but there has to be some way for TF to quickly see who qualifies for the larger avatar & PM-box ;) :p

Assuming I can find the damn thing. I'm mostly talking about my older stuff, which I already uploaded.
