GRAND OPENING: CivFanatics File Database

btw, Plotinus, how come you havent made your avatar 80x80? You are a mod, after all. ;)

I'm not really bothered about such things. In fact I wouldn't have an avatar at all if Mistfit hadn't kindly made this one for me.

As for comments on the database, I think it's good for non-members to be able to comment. Files actually get downloaded by non-members far more times than by members, and of course most of those aren't going to register simply to say they liked a file (although one or two people did that to comment on mine, which was nice). In fact, as far as I can tell, very few people are leaving comments, but it does give them a bit more of an option.

"Civ3 - 3D Models" category is created inside Civ3 Graphics now. :) Does Civ4 section need a similar category?

Allowing guests to post comments is not a good idea. Some people would abuse it.

Oh, so you do need to be registered to post a comment... hmmm, I do have to wonder about the need for it then. I mean why leave a comment there and not just go to the thread and post it there where?
Mind you, I'm not necessarily saying it should be removed, I for one am always for more choice. Having said that however, if the system is not being used, or is barely used, and at the same time taking up resources, even if it's just moderators' time, then maybe it should be reevaluated.

Thanks, I have all of my model and what-nots that were already at CivFanatics added to the Database.

Actually, it looks like guests can post comments after all. See here for the proof, as well as evidence that TF's fear of such a situation is well founded.

Just what i expected. :shake: And wait till people start getting used to using the database ...

yeah, I enabled guest comment posting yesterday, but disabled it last night. Doesn't look good. The built-in comments system is not sophisticated enough to handle guest comments abuse.

I'm glad to hear that threads can give download links themselves, rather than just linking to the registry in the Database. I don't like sending people to another page to get them to download something. But, I agree with zulu9812 that the Database will discourage people from visiting the forums.

In my opinion people shouldn't have to wad through the forums to find a file they wish to download. Now I personally spend several hours a day just reading through the different threads and get much enjoyment out of it. But when I am looking for a mod or somthing to download it is great to have one place I can quickly look through and find the right prize. Really the File Database is not much more then a well oragnized group of threads that just have files.

The bottom line being people should want to look and read the forums, not be forced to do it just to get some files. :)

Eventually I will add a Civ2 section. I would need helpers to add those Civ2 files to the database though. The good thing is the system allows that. :)

Some Civ2 files come in a few files (ex. sound files separate), it may be necessary to combine them into one, or list the other files in the description post for people to download...

Hi---great job on this site, what a wonderful resource!

Reference the question at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=4431327 and your mention of sound files above. What is your policy on uploading music files? I have the music converted into .mp3 format and would be happy to upload if you support such an effort. But I don't see a folder for "Music" and don't see .mp3 as a permissible file type. Don't know if you would consider such files part of the original game or a "mod" since a type of conversion is taking place.

I suppose that Thunderfall is heavily against it unless you yourself own the copyright to the music. If you do, just upload it in a zip...

Good news! The upload size limit has been raised to 10 MB from 4 MB!

Thanks to our host Telefragged for making this possible!

Well, having a few songs from the game is no big deal, as long as we don't post too many. Still, I don't think we need a music category (at least for now).

I've noticed that some of the newer files in the database have names comprised wholly of numbers, e.g. Eusebius's World Religions for Warlords has the filename 1156428244.zip. Is the file databse renaming these files, or is this the uploaders doing?

Would it be possible to get a category column added, as well as name-based and category-based sorting of files in the files' table in users' profiles - when someone has couple of hundred of files it becomes difficult to find what you're looking for even when you know what it is. :)

I think that's actually files from the new EasyUpload system, they get renamed into something like that.

I'm getting this error when attempting to upload jpg files (screenshots). I've uploaded before so I know it works.

Edit: Okay, I was able to upload a saved game, but when I tried again with the screenshots I still got the same error. What am I missing?

Edit #2: I tried uploading a gif file and still got the same error.

Then use imageshack. It's very reliable, and you can upload pictures 1 meg large.

My apologies, I just realized I put this in the wrong thread. It should be in the Easy Uploads thread. Moving it now.

HI,
sorry but I there's some question I need an aswer to. And sorry about the way I kill your language too ;) (I'm Italian)

All Modders: Please start adding the files (both your existing files and all upcoming files) to the File Database today!

Is there a selection (good enough / downloaded enough / minimum size / someone approval) or every work I make can be added to the database?

Thunderfall said:
My file is already uploaded to the uploads folder using Easy Upload or is attached to a forum post, do I need to upload the file again when adding the file to the File Database?

No. The File Database allows you to provide a URL to the file. You would need to provide the file size (in bytes) for linked files.

Will the link to the file in the thread (Easy Upload) still work after, or the file will move to a different URL then? Should I remove the link in the thread then?

Thunderfall said:
Instead of linking to the file directly, in your file's discussion thread, you should link to your file entry in the file database instead.

Sorry for asking this, but why not both? There's surely a reason I didn't understand, but why someone has to go to the thread to the database to get a link to download the file? It is easier if whatever threat or database had a link to the file. I mean: the file has only one URL, but there's a link is in both places.

[*]You can upload image(s) for the file. The first image uploaded for the file will be used as the file thumbbail and is visible on the files listing page.

This is a great Idea. I used the database and see Images next to the files is very helpful. Search for files in the forum was a lot more time spending.

One last question... For a mod like my Leonardo which is neither a real civilization (a Leonardo da Vinci Civ has never really existed) and neither a fantasy concept one (no elf, wizard and this kind of stuff) which one would be the right category? I ask because this is the kind of mod I like to edit.

Thank you for your time. :)
