GRAND OPENING: CivFanatics File Database

Civ2 categories added! :) Also added a redirect link to the Civ2 Creation forum.

So, is the idea that any future units shouldn't have a thread because the database system allows for detailed descriptions, as well as comments, which essentially covers what the forums do?

Edit: Another Q?...

You say that the file links should now link the entries in the FDB, not the file itself, what about the attachement links (the ones that are automatically added when we attach a file to a post)? We don't need to remove them, do we (hmmm, I'm not even sure I know how to do that )?

It's up to you guys. Personally I think forum is better for file discussions (but not better for file download), since you can subcribe to threads and tend to get more response than external system. The gallery and main site news is an example. Very few people post comments there even though comments are enabled. Maybe it'd be different for files though since there are more things to discuss. Also keep in mind the comments in gallery or file DB don't count toward postcounts. The creation forum is really the center for all modding related discussions and can't be replaced by the comments system.

If you post a forum thread, just make sure to link to the file entry in the file database for the download. It's also a good idea to include a link to the thread in the description of your file in the File DB.

A small tip about converting file size to bytes:

You can use Google to do the math easily. For example, if your file is 17.5 MB, just type "17.5 MB to bytes" and hit search. Google will return "17.5 megabytes = 18 350 080 bytes". Then you just copy and paste the number, then remove the spaces in it. If you don't remove the spaces the system will not record the file size.

hey, a couple of questions:

- why can't I link images (to the file database) already uploaded to the civfanatics file servers?

- is it necessary to include info about the file size? Isn't a rough estimate enough :)

Also in the future, should I be using only this new database to upload stuff at CFC? (Or shall I upload them in the old way and add the files in the database later?)

1) I think it's because for images it gives you delete option, and for that to be possible, the image needs to be on the forum servers' upload folder. Its pretty arbitrary. You can still use image tags to include other images you already uploaded in your file description, so you just need to upload one image for the file thumbnail.

2) It's a good idea to provide file size for linked files. Rough estimate is fine, but you can also use google to do the conversion easily (see a few posts up).

Your last question I also answered a few posts up. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=4318487&postcount=23
It's up to you. If you want better feedback for your file, then you should still post a thread inthe unit forum like you did in the past. Forum is great for feedbacks. I would say it's better to add the file to the File DB first, then post a link to the new entry on the forum.

No, you don't need to remove them. It's ok to use existing attachment links as download link in the File DB.

But from now on there is no reason to use forum attachments to upload new mod files though (except image previews). In fact, I probably will remove zip and rar extensions for forum attachment uploads...

That does look cool. Thanks for that quick link aaglo.

Eh... that's an old file. Very old. About 2 years. I was just testing the linking from database to forums over there...

Uh... then why were you talking about that link... ;) uh... forget it

TF - Can we have a Civ4 category for accessories? I have a handful of heads and plan on creating helmets, beards, ect to be added to existing units via the nifviewer. I know Rabbit has a ton of weapons and I don't know if they should go in the Units category or not. Thanks.

Sorry to confuse both of us aaglo. It's early here. :)

Another question. I added a Civ4 improvement under Other graphics. Are there going to be enough improvements to warrant a new category or is Other good enough?
