GRAND OPENING: CivFanatics File Database

What? Where? Did I miss something, or what?
Altough I have to admit, that it sounds very cool... Can I use that larger avatar here at CFC?

For now anyone who helps to add 150 or more files (especally files made by inactive authors) to the File Database are eligible to join the group. :)
Well, looking at the pace MC was adding those units, it doesn't take more than what.. 4 hours or so :)

My guess would be 6 hours.

I don't suppose that if someone tries to upload a zip file a message can be displayed reminding them that finished stuff should be uploaded to the file database? As old habits do die hard.

May I make a suggestion/request...

Is it possible to support multiple versions, mirrors or related files?

In some cases authors support multiple versions of a mod, e.g. Vanilla and Warlords. In other cases, they may provide alternative locations to download their files. Finally, in some cases they might post additional files that provide separate but closely related content - for example in my case I have a thread where I posted new weapons for units, and for convenience I split the download into four files depending on type of weapon (just in case somebody wants to download only the swords for example). I don't want to create a new entry for each of these. Now, in this case it actually somewhat makes sense :) but there are other cases where it doesn't. At the same time however I would like to keep track of the downloads.

So basically, ideally I'm envisioning a system where you could add additional files to the FDB entry, not unlike adding additional images. The first file is the main one, and the one whose size is shown in the description, but the rest of the files are also available from the same location and contribute to the download numbers, whether cumulative with the main file or separate for each one (this is why of course just putting a link to those files in the description is not enough).

With all this talk of number of downloads this might seem like a vain request, but I think espeically in the case of mirrored files or alternative versions, if the authors are going to use this system they should recieve the full benefit from it. :)

Multiple mirrors is actually planned for the next version AFAIK. Don't know when it would become available though...

Sweetness! :goodjob:

I've noticed that some people are still using the old file upload system to upload their units.:(

I;ve also noticed Bluemofia has started uploading some of bebro's units.:)

Well, they can still use Easy Upload to upload but they should not link to the file directly, if the file is a main file. They need to add the file to the file database first and link to the file entry in the file thread. They can link to additional files like patches directly.

I already added a message to the Easy Upload page that appears after a file is uploaded.

TF, could you make the rewards at 100 uploads? 150 seems way too much... :p
I will decide after you have added 100 files. ;)

-----

I am going to disable zip file uploads for forum attachments btw.

It's not going to affect already existing attachements is it?

Edit: Forgot what I was gonna ask here in the first place :)...

So about uploading to the tutorials section of the FDB - how would it work for tutorials that are posted directly into posts, as oppose to being attached as doc's, or pdf's, or what have you? Can I create an entry with a link to the thread but w/o any files uploaded?

rar file is allowed in Easy Upload and also in the download system. :)

Currentlly the download system's built-in upload allows these extensions: zip rar ace tar gz 7z txt pdf

It will not affect existing attachments.

Currently the file DB lists 20 files per page. Is that good enough? or should I increase it a bit to show 25 files per page?

I'd say increase it. The less pages the better.

Yeah 25 I think is better, though it'd be great if the user could choose the number. (power to the people I always say :D)

Also, don't forget my question about posting tutorials. :)

Oh and another thing... I just made an entry in the description of which I used a spoiler (I btw love the fact that the description field is every bit as flexible as the regular forum posts :goodjob:). Anyway, what happens is that when you see the short description in the list of files, if there's room the contents of the spoiler gets appended at the end without any indication it's inside a spoiler. First of all that just looks odd, but I was wondering if it would be possible to not just ignore the spoiler tags themselves but also everything in between them?

yeah, I think you can do that. But it would be great if people can make their tutorials into doc, txt, or pdf format so people can download and read them offline.

You can also post the full tutorial in the description, if it fits.

EDIT: upped to 25 files per page now.

No. The short description ignores all tags.

LOL so let's see - tutorial in the post, tutorial in FDB entry's description, plus links to doc and pdf versions... talk about oversaturating the market :D

P.S. It's a good idea though I think I'll make pdf version for the tutorials.
