@west india man, I imagine the flight situation is different this year.

Probably an important hint is Syria being gray (which I suppose means western sahara/NA). So is south Sudan and that colony in south America.
Good eye. Taiwan is also grayed out, so whatever this map is measuring might be based on UN data? I’m stumped.

I now noticed you can massively enlarge the map if you click on it, so there is a final gray area, some island a little to the north of Antarctica.

Something to do with workforce / production or maybe export ?

I decided I don't like that map. Here is a replacement map about the same topic and from the same source. However, the new map represents the data in a way that's more logical/fair/easy.

something to do with diplomatic missions?

It is not related to diplomacy.

Something to do with workforce / production or maybe export ?

It is related to production of some kind.

It is from UN data.

Maybe it is some brand issue? I suppose only some food-stuff have actual brandnames protected for place of origin (wouldn't make sense for coal :p )

Not brands.

New map? I suppose darker means more of whatever it is, right?

It does.

In the new map, is any of the countries a source of what is mapped?

No, it’s not something relative to one country or anything like that.

I think darker means worse.

I first thought oil, but maybe something else natural resources related? Mining?

It’s nothing I’d consider good or bad. It is related to natural resources, but not mining.

Could be imported oil/gas per capita. US is a major producer, but also imports.
But it wouldn't explain Sweden or some other countries.

Probably an important hint is Syria being gray (which I suppose means western sahara/NA). So is south Sudan and that colony in south America.

It’s not related to energy.

Is it per capita or absolute number?

It’s a percent.

Something to do with pollution from agricultural production?

Doesn't Denmark mostly produce beer and lego?

Googling also revealed (wind) turbines. Also a main product (apparently) of the Ukraine.
But I am not seeing Bangladesh as being a leader in the production of wind turbines - or anything else, for that matter.

USA makes a lot of wheat, and India has too much capita for that to be right, I think. I was also thinking oil of some kind for first map, changed my mind, and this new map has me pretty stumped tbh :p

Percentage of land area dedicated to agriculture (all kinds)?

I think it might be % relation of RGO vs Production

RGO is Resource Gathering Operation (as a whole - not a specific resource - might be berries :D )

Have you been playing Victoria II again? :p

Nope but I admit I've learned the term RGO from Victoria 2 indeed ! :D

I should be more precise I think that darker countries have larger RGO (Agriculture % if minig is not included as hinted before) than production.

The percentage of the country that's cultivated land.

edit: I spent an hour reading the wikipedia page for Denmark's economy trying to find outliers and I think I got it :)

Percentage of land area dedicated to agriculture (all kinds)?

Not quite the same answer but I seem to be second to the party :(
