Portable Radios? They were transistor based and now a lot are digital.

Or it could be walkmen and their various children (CD players, MP3s iPods, etc.)

These are getting closer, though still quite a ways off.

The device in question isn't only digital, only that the digital age made such improvements over the analog version that the device became quite wide spread. And yes, it first took off in Japan, though the forebears came from Europe and much earlier than one might think.

Nope. There's a reason I said those two were getting closer.... Consider what radio and television have in common (note: it's not radio wave broadcasting at which I'm hinting).
