Guess the Map VI: Retroactive Cartographer

If it's something with a sport (nations present at tourney x), it needs to be one where both the Spanish and the Dutch are bad...

btw. that map is strange as everything outside the geographic borders of Europe is greyed out, thereby for example dividing the great nation of Kazakhstan. That's coincidence, right?

Yes, I just grabbed the nearest one I could find, an SVG map of Europe which had the non-European parts grayed out. So Greenland (part of Denmark) I painted red but the Asian part of Russia wasn't. Parts of the Caucasus are weirded out as well. :undecide:
Geothermal power?
Amount of happy people?
No and no.

I really didn't think I'd make this one so difficult!

Does it have to do with, uh, Europe?

Sorry, been less online than usual. It does have to do with Europe because it's a European map.

It's a historical category.

Belligerents in some war or another? (Although I can't think of any wars with anything close to that particular set of countries...)

Seeing Italy, France and Ukraine, i guess it's about Vikings. Countries where Vikings/Normans were in power (for a part)?

Looks right. Or their presence.

No Vikings in Finland? Also Latvia and Lithuania would have to be red, Turkey probably as well... to display such a thing, a map without modern national borders would make a lot more sense...

countries with numbered republics works for France, Germany, Italy, Poland, etc., but England, Denmark etc. ? I do have trouble connecting the big countries with the little ones (Estonia, Ireland and Iceland seem particularly disconnected).

I guess I am going to read up on how Estonia differs from the other Baltics AND from Finland. Estonia really seems to be the outlier here.

Countries that have been both monarchies and republics?

Yay!

Well, I did this in a hurry. An easy one.

For reference on this page.

If it's a historical category, are we to assume that all of the colored states existed in the referenced time period? Successor states / parts of a larger state don't seem to count because Estonia is colored, while the other Baltic states aren't, although afaik they all have been independent at the same time.

Didn't see last page, blasted CFC navigation tools.

Oh, close!

Yes indeed! As close as possible to this:

The Vikings raided Finland but the Swedes only started settling/conquering it after the Viking age was past.
Turkey, no, the Vikings went there but were never in power, they were Mercs.
I wasn't sure about settlements in LatviaLithuania so I left well alone -and forgot to rectify.
Countries that have been both monarchies and republics?
The Scandinavian countries have never been republics, and Spain has. So no.
Ingerland was a republic commonwealth too.

See above. It was present-day states that had Viking/norse rulers/domain.

Civ-addicted, off you go!

Aha, that's what you have to do to make the challenge:mischief:

Well, had to come up with something lame:

Are the greens and the yellow some sort of combination?

...so I'm not the only one who doesn't even have a wild guess?
