Dear oh dear. The situation is just a teensy little bit more complicated than just oil, my most esteemed Dr scorch. There are issues of religion, culture, geopolitics, but most of all morality, and a ****en madman who thinks he can take on the world and remake it in his own image.
It is this last point which is most important. The terrorists of al Qaeda are not after negotiated goals; they do not approach affairs from Greco Roman tradition of logic and reason, nor froma moral ethic that is familiar to Western society (by this I do not mean that this is superior to some other POVs, although it is to their twisted conception of the world, but rather that it is beyond the pale of generally how 'we' operate.)
Their sworn goal is the destruction of the West, with all its democracy, freedom and opportunity, and the imposition of a barbaric, primitive twisted-Islamic state. Even the majority of Muslims condemn them as EVIL. They cannot be assuaged, nor appeased, even though some would like them to be. They are alien, and must be destroyed before they harm anyone more. Simple as that. Then we worry about the geopolitical balance of the region, or changes in US foreign policy.
They are as intractable as Hitler, and I would very much like every one of their misbegotten beings to end up like he did: burnt in petrol, the remains kept in a cardboard box in a Soviet storage facility, and thrown down a sewer in the 1960s.
Dread said it perfectly. Sometimes, despite it being a dirty job, it has to be done. You do not reason with a rabid dog. You destroy it. that is what is happening, and it is exactly what will come to pass. Fact.
If you want to go b!tch about the morality of it, or claim that they are killing hundreds of thousands of innocents, then do so, but don't expect most thinking people to pay you any heed. A poll gave 94% support for the US action, and that is mirrored in the worlds reaction.
