Halo Mafia [Game Thread]

I'm shocked at how many people on a gaming forum haven't played Halo. It's only the most influential and successful video game of the last decade, as well as featuring the most robust multiplayer ever in a video game. I have never owned a Halo game, but I have still sunk many, many hours into Halo multiplayer (1 - 3, never played much of Reach or ODST) and some hours into the co-op campaigns.

Look at its sales, look at the million FPS games trying to emulate its success.

What tops its commercial success and impact?

Well, unless it brang anything new to FPSes, I would not consider it influential.

I don't like FPSes. I've only played TF2.

Halo, while a historic landmark among video games, is probably not the most influential, even in the multiplayer aspect. Beyond sheer play time, the engine itself isn't ground breaking; it doesn't have any new or interesting mechanics relative to its engine; its storyline wasn't that great; and while its multiplayer was extremely influential, I believe its influential only within its genre (as opposed to, say CoD's more realistic warfare)/

Now, that's a good post. I was just kidding when I said lame because, I haven't played and I don't know barely anything about it. But Zack wasn't precisely making any points. :p

Halo is the only reason why the ECKSBAWKS became a success. Without Halo, it would've basically been a really big Zune. Same goes for FPSes. If it wasn't for Halo, we'd still be playing Doom and Duke Nukem clones, which aren't as popular as the modern FPS.

This is very true.

Same goes for FPSes. If it wasn't for Halo, we'd still be playing Doom and Duke Nukem clones, which aren't as popular as the modern FPS.

This, however, is not true. The genre had been shifting away from Doom-esque games for nearly five years before Halo ever came out.

Now, the game was a resounding commercial success and defined the market, both in games and in consoles, for many years. But should that be the only measure for influence, especially when naming the most influential game? I don't believe so.

Alright, I'll defer to you on the second point because I was seven at the time, and the only computer game I had played at that point was my dad's copy of X-Wing.

Now you are talking. Doom, Duke, I love them games
