Indeed, it was a trade union which actually contributed to the fall of communism.

Which might lead one to suppose that the "Communism", whose downfall that Solidarity had a hand in, wasn't exactly communism at all.

Solidarity being a trade union movement whose raison d'etre was syndicalism, of course.

But I'm no political scientist.

Well that's a pretty big if, but it's a good question. I don't know why they landed on fjord dumpage for the tailings as best solution. Perhaps the logistics of removing it would be too costly to run the mine at a profit. Which ever way you spin it, the ocean is our food supply and really doesn't need any more toxins and heavy metals poured into it.

At root, communism has been the apparently mistaken notion that the social ownership of the means of production is a good idea.

Or something. To be honest, I don't really have a clue. I just say stuff. And I don't think anyone sensible would ever take me to task for it.

I think the objection is that people are associating a theoretical economic system (communism/socialism/what-have-you) with the authoritarian police state when they should be on separate and independent axes. And there's a bit of frustration when people misappropriate the name of something perceived as good and smack it on an inferior and completely unrelated product.

Kinda like how nobody mistakes the so-called "Democratic" "People's" "Republic" of Korea as a fully-functioning Western democratic republic that reflects the interest of its people, despite those terms being in the name of the country. Nobody should mistake totalitarian police states for anything but what they were or are, and don't give them the propaganda victory of changing the language on ya.
