Microsoft cancelling their press conference post E3 reveal is a little disconcerting if it means they really don't want to answer questions.

Okay so I ran into a guy while travelling and he let me try out his laptop with Windows 8. I have to say it is one of the most user friendly operating systems I have ever used. Not once did I struggle to find anything I was looking for and the Metro UI did not cause any issues whatsoever.

I also looked up a lot of the reviews for Windows 8 and most of the reviews are reviewing the evaluation/testing version of Windows 8, not the fully functional OS. What people fail to realize is the evaluation/testing version is used to work out all the issues and bugs. So to judge an entire operating system based on an evaluation version is just plain unfair.

Metro UI is still garbage. People do not want a smartphone/tablet OS on there PC. While they have brought back the start button, they are yet to bring back the start menu. If Windows 8.1 does little to improve sales then Microsoft will be forced to bring back the start menu as an option for users. The almighty dollar will convince them to do so. Metro UI is just Microsoft Bob all over again. Windows 8 is still being adapted slower then Vista was back at this point in 2008. I think even the dreaded Windows ME did better at this point in its life cycle. Regarding people who said the start menu won't come back, people said the start button would not come back and it came back. There are rumors there was a lot of fighting within Microsoft to see just the start button come back, if the Windows development team is this blind to bad sales maybe some of them need to get fired.

No, the rule is the target customer is always right. Based off your rather cranky posts it appears you are clearly not Microsoft's target customer.

Have I mentioned it's optional?

No, nobody said this.

unsubstantiated stuff about sales

Windows sales are doing fine.

Windows desktop marketshare when Windows 8 was released eight months ago: 91.67%
Windows desktop marketshare today: 91.68%

And they've gone from 0% of tablet sales to nearly 10%.

Tommy, how is this an answer to what Commodore said above. It does not address any of the statements he made. What it sounds like is that you hate Windows 8 and then you apply that to everyone else. I think what you should have said above is that Tommy does not want a smartphone/tablet OS on his computer. This is all about what you want, like and dislike, please do not apply it to "people". Many have been kind enough to try to engage you and help you see that they are satisfied customers of Win 8.

Please be kind enough to acknowledge their posts and their opinions as you wish them to do so with yours.

Have you ever considered switching to Linux for your OS?

Most of those 91% are using Windows XP or Windows 7. While Windows 8 holds very low marketshare when compaired to the other OSes. It took Windows 8 at least three months to surpass Linux. Windows 7 did that in less then half that time. Also a lot of people who got Windows 8 PCs have downgraded to 7.

Also, leif I have considered switching to Linux or Mac if MS keeps heading down the Metro road of blunders. I am going to start building a custom PC soon and I will load it with Windows 7, MS will support Windows 7 until 2020 might even have to extended it past then if enough people are still using it.

Then there is the XBox One failure. It looks like so far the Xbox One is going to be one of the biggest failures in video game history, up there with the Apple Bandai Pippin. While it might get some good games, a lot of people will be turned away by the flaws. MS is treating there customers like criminals. Hardcore gamers will hate the XBox One.

So what's your point? Eight months after the release of Windows 8, Windows marketshare hasn't budged. How long do you think it will take for marketshare to drop if Microsoft doesn't do an about-face?

Windows as a whole is doing well but that is mostly Windows 7 and XP. Windows 8 is not doing well at all. Windows 8 is just the new Vista at this point. Odds are that Windows 8 will never surpass the marketshare held by Windows 7. You could even make a reasonable comparison of Windows 8 to Windows ME.

Thing is Vista and ME failed because of bugs and other technical problems, Windows 8 was a gamble that backfired due to its interface. So these are different reasons for failure. While Windows 8 might be a mostly technically sound operating system to say the least it is one of the most controversial. As TV Tropes would put things, Windows 8 has created a broken base, divided between the people that like the changes or are indifferent to them and the ones like me, who hate the Metro UI and the start screen. My hatred of Windows 8 is very strong. I despise it as I see the Metro UI and start screen as a threat to the way computing should be.

As for the XBox One, this is another public relations disaster for Microsoft. Regardless of whatever great third party support MS might get for the X1 many gamers, myself included are going to be turned away by the fact the X1 basically has DRM, blocks used games and not to mention the Kinect camera spy device which is just paranoia fuel. I would not have a problem with the Kinect features if they were not required to be plugged in. If it was optional this would not be an issue. I am somewhat paranoid and that is why I hate this feature being required. All of the things are listed are potential deal breakers, but combined, kills any interest I have in owning an XBox One. Not to mention there is the required installs, no upgradeable HD and the fact the X1 only has 500GB on its hard drive. That might work for casual gamers but not for hardcore gamers.

Unsubstantiated and/or already debunked and/or not relevant.

Unsubstantiated and/or already debunked and/or not relevant.

I mentioned the divided user base and I think this thread is a great example of that. This debate has been going on for a long time now just here between all of us. You can find similar debates in just about any Windows 8 related discussion. You have die hard desktop purists like myself who hated Windows 8 for its Metro UI and Start Screen and the Windows 8 fans who for reasons I can't not fully understand, like this same crap. I don't see the appeal of Metro on a PC or of the start screen taking up the whole screen.

You're a vocal, very small minority.

I'm also a desktop purist, I don't use Metro at all. The desktop in Windows 8 is better than the desktop in Windows 7.

The desktop in Windows 8 has no start menu, and I don't count the God Awful start screen. I would say the Windows 8 fans are the minority. Just look at the adaptation rates and market share for Windows 8. As hated as Vista was it got off to a better start.

I JUST SAW VISUAL STUDIOS 2012 TODAY AND I CRIED BECAUSE THE MENU BAR IS SCREAMING AT ME IN ALL CAPS, SUCH AN UGLY UI.

Seriously, what gives MS?

Doesn't need one, the start screen works just as well as the start menu.

I would say the Windows 8 fans are the minority.

Of course you would, but you'd be wrong. You just ignore all the numbers showing that people are overall pretty happy with Windows 8.

Just look at the adaptation rates and market share for Windows 8.

Yes, because businesses are upgrading to Windows 7, as they planned to before the release of Win8, and consumers are buying tablets and phones instead of new PC.

You're bad at aesthetics.
