Have you ever been poor?

I'm thankful for the prosperity I'm living in. My family is middle-class. My dad doesn't have a job at the moment, but we are still living very well compared to much of America. I don't want to sound proud, but I'm glad we can live as we do. :)

As a college student, personally, I *am* poor. I'm borrowing around 8 grand a semester, and i know i cant keep that up. im busting my ass, working two jobs, taking 17 credit hours etc etc...but DC is expensive. its rough being lower middle class at a rich kid school in a rich kid town
Then why go there? Go someplace cheap instead. And any American who went to college can not call themselves poor, because higher education in America is freaking expensive, and if you can afford that you are not poor.

Usually people in the western world who call themselves poor are just poor planners who never think ahead.

btw, I am not poor, nor have I ever been.

Fred, what are living costs and taxes in Brasil? Because 2k$/month doesn't sound that bad to me, and I'm Norwegian - we have some of the highest taxes and living costs in the world. And you own your own place at the age of 28 , I wouldn't call that rich but I would say you're doing pretty well.

I grew up with a single mother, and my father gave us the bare minimum in child support, which was a pittance. We were poor, but not impoverished.

My mother did an excellent job of making sure we had a good home, our cupboards were never bare. I missed out on alot of the nicetites other kids had, but always got some good christmas presents and never missed a season of hockey.

Then of course, I lived the typical poor university student life, but that doesn't really count.

Now I make upper-middle class wages and am very content with my financial state of affairs.

I was never truly poor. We've had some tough times, but poor was never something I'd describe myself as.

Things are not usually as expensive in Brazil as they are in Europe/US (except technology - these are MUCH more expensive, sometimes twice the price for computer parts or cars, for example). Problem here is that we have to pty for EVERYTHING, and we have one of the highest tax collect in the world, if not the highest, that counting direct + indirect taxes amounts to about 40% of one's income.

Here, to have a decent education, we have to pay for kids school since they are babies. And college, which used to be free, is now changing. We can't count on any governmental services as well, they are invariably crap.

To tell the truth, I consider that to have a confortable life without much worries for when I marry and have kids, I have to double my income. I'll not consider me high middle class until I manage to make four times more.

Thankfully, i have plans in motion for that already... ;)

Regards :).

like what plans are that Fred? I feel a college education isn't worth crap these days so I am keen to hear advice on how to make it in the working world.

sysyphus, have you read rmsharpes's link? No? OK, I recommend you do.

No, I have never been poor. Even when I haven't had any money, I've always had access to what I needed.

Homie:

Actually, I am back on study to get approval in tests for major public jobs here in Brazil, things like Federal Prosecutor, Federal Judge, or Union's Attorney. They make very good money in these jobs, 5 times what I make, and i feel I can manage to get approved if I resume studying. I already have the classe scheduled to start january.

After that, I can go back at trying some professional art, and if I suceed, I can really become rather well paid with these two jobs.

regards :).

There was a time after I was just married and we were transferring to another college that we couldnt afford to eat anything but potatos. We ate potatos in every variation imaginable. Fried, mashed, baked, au gratin, you name it. It was the cheapest thing we could buy to eat in bulk. Luckily it was only for a few months.

Being poor is having to keep buying $800 cars because they're what you can afford, and then having the cars break down on you, because there's not an $800 car in America that's worth a damn.

Not at all true. I myself have a car that cost me 750, and I've had it now for 3 years. I even left the dome light on in my car all night, came out the next morning, started up like nothing happened. The only real problems I've had with it were that one of the windshield wipers quit working, the motor was fine, but the teeth in the wiper arm were stripped.

I've paid over five grand for cars and had them die within a year. I don't beat my cars, and I don't take extra special care of them. The car that cost five grand was an '98 Chrysler, and the car that cost 750 is a '91 Ford.

very good purchase. If he maintain this streak with other purchases such as in the stock or real estate market, he will be rich sooner than we can imagine.

I cant afford higher education at all! Im only borrowing 8 a semester because im a smart kid, so i got a lot of scholarships, and i qualify for lots of federal programs. I want to study political science in DC. Id rather be in debt and have a great education, then not be in debt, with a degree from suckarse state. Ohio public schools are not good

I'm sorry, did you have something to add?

Wow, we have alot in common, We both can't afford higher education, we both want to study political science(I'm thinking of becoming a lobbyist and/or Senator), an we both love DC, except I'm going to be going to college in San Diego(greatest city ever).

No, I've always been very well off. My parents were "post-college" poor once, but it never really got worse than, say, having to by kool-aid because they didn't want to pay for soda.

I'm suprised more people haven't claimed to be poor, it is one of those "cool things to say you are" on the internet along with rich, smart, good looking, black belt in a martial art, friends with minorities, etc.

This is really not a very clever thing to say, and while I could expect this sort of thing from some of the usual suspects here, it is disappointing coming from you, Fifty.
I don't know what circles you attend to, but I have never experienced anybody " being cool" by claiming poverty.
On topic: Yes I have been poor. I grew up in poverty, coming from a typical struggling working-class family.
I also had to go through a different period in the 90's due to some unfortunate happenings which I prefer not to say anything more about.

Globally:
I've never been poor, and it's very likely that I'll never be poor.

Locally:
There have been times, when I've been relatively poor, but I've always had something to eat (except that one 2-month period 8 years ago, when I moved to an apartment which had no refridgerator - that was weird). Currently I have about 70000 € mortgage, so I suppose in that way I'm a bit poor ;)
