His reward was losing his privacy !
One of the largest UK newspapers published a picture of his house, the adress and how to get there.

The press is imo very much needed as a 4th power in our democracies, to keep us adequately informed.
The checks and balances of our democracies.

But where are the checks and balances against press media stealing and abusing privacy ?

My guess is that his address could be easily obtained through public records. His privacy wasn't stolen or abused. If it was, then you are stealing and abusing his privacy by pointing this story out to people who may be unaware of it so that we can look up the newspaper article and get the so-called stolen and abusive information.

that is semantics, fit for lawyers

Privacy in the ordinary meaning was harassed here

Maybe that's why the OP didn't post a citation to what he was specifically talking about, because he didn't want to add to the problem but rather just wanted to point out how absurdly stupid some in the news media can sometimes be.

How did it become publically know who saved the world? If this guy publically came forward, then he surrendered some degree of privacy in return for bragging rights. Again, once his name is out, address is easily obtainable ad fairly public.

He gave the gist of the story where stalkers could easily find the story - he is contributing to the problem by spreading further - I wouldn't call him absurdly stupid for that - just a bit too eager to commit the sins he complains of. I don't fault him except a bit mockingly in the language he used in the OP. If that language seems harsh, then blame the original drafter.

I assume the newspapers don't need to make it easier for any would be retaliators. Let those who would retaliate against him do their own work.

I'm sure the biggest contribution was made by those who published his personal info to begin with. Pointing out their mistake probably doesn't contribute very significantly to the problem which has already been created.

I would consider that stealing and abusing privacy trumps expressing my disapproval by stealing and abusing privacy and decline to post a thread on the subject.

I see. So the OP shouldn't have posted anything on the incident. Interesting approach to problem solving.

He shouldn't have if he didn't want to take the interesting approach to problem solving of stealing and abusing privacy.

What about those of us who post in the thread continually bumping it to the top of the forum? Are we also guilty of abusing the privacy of the person in question?

Boy does your discussion look stupid from the perspective of a person who has taken the time to read a few articles about the story instead of randomly assuming things.
