He stopped the biggest ransomware attack in history. His reward....?

Well, mainly this here:

How did it become publically know who saved the world? If this guy publically came forward, then he surrendered some degree of privacy in return for bragging rights. Again, once his name is out, address is easily obtainable ad fairly public.

He did come forward in a semi-anonymous way. He is smart enough to know he wouldn't stay semi-anonymous. He is probably even smart enough to understand the word if.

To be fair, maybe the newspaper published his address thinking that people might then be able to send him letters of recognition and thanks or something. However, even if he was the one who came forward, if he didn't want his address published, then I think it seems fair to say that the newspaper should have asked his permission first before putting his address out there.

But where are the checks and balances against press media stealing and abusing privacy ?

This really is the question isn't it? Sometimes I think we take the idea of a free press way too far in the West and don't adequately check that freedom to keep it from being abused.

If the paper really did "abuse" and "steal" his "privacy", there should be potential of causes of action for the delicate snowflake so-called victim to sue under. Unless, of course, tort "reform" watered down such causes of action beyond realistic use.

the biggest attack is like totally an hoax . Blame Microsoft that has proven XP is like totally unworthy to keep while there are far better stuff to have . The attack apparently has made only 100 000 $ or € and it stays there in the accounts . Not because the world is intently watching and will immediately pounce on people ... But it helps belittling the N. Koreans who supposedly are behind this . While the defensive measures must have put millions of new bugs and malware into computers of interest ; now that the kill-switch could have been activated like 5 seconds into the attack .

I mean it happened, but only really backwards systems got hurt. Guess that's the moral of the story?

Still the guy will probably get a book or movie deal of out this, even if it never gets made someone will buy the rights. That's probably why he came forward.

on the other hand , just as an example , the hacking of the Qatari TV was some fancy classy act . This master troll hacks the foreign side of the distribution and for 4 hours straight the Saudis and the lot read stuff while like nobody in Qatar even knows . It's a deadly sin , calling Trump a loser and the Saudis want revenge like totally . Qataris pay hackers to hack back , showing the evil Gulf oil sheiks are so against Democracy and like it can be war . Naturally the New Turkey jas a "base" and "people" in Qatar . Do not feel restricted , heroic evil Gulf oil sheiks , nobody like ever considers the Army of Petrol as "Turkish" ...
