Hijacked jet lands in Mexico City

A passenger plane flying from the Mexican resort of Cancun has been hijacked and flown to Mexico City, officials say.

Transport Minister Juan Molinar told Mexican radio the jet had landed safely at Mexico City's international airport.

The plane has 104 passengers on board. Their condition is unknown.

Mexican news websites earlier reported that three men had threatened to blow the plane up unless they were allowed to speak to President Felipe Calderon.

Mexican media report the hijackers are three Bolivian citizens. The reports could not be confirmed.

TV Azteca reported that the AeroMexico aircraft was parked at the end of the runway and that passengers were seen leaving the plane.

Witnesses said that military personnel were at the airport.

Bolivians demanded to speak to the president of Mexico? What's he going to do, send them some tortillas?

Sorry, hijackers, you've got to do Rome or better for getting world attention.

The news seems to be saying it is all over now, and that is is likely the hijackers may have falsely claimed to have a bomb.

Lame. I can't believe I started a thread for these losers.

The [stupid] hijackers said that Providence had told them 09/09/09 would be a special day and that they would have to do something to grab the world's attention (or something pointless like that) -- there was an interview in Spanish; they're pretty stupid, but with a leader like Evo Morales, can you really expect a lot? ;)

At least now the US knows it doesn't have to fear Latin American airborne terrorists.

I don't get this whole freakout over the date. Do these people forget there is a "20" in front of that year, blowing the symmetry out of the water?

Seems that he read the date upside down…

MEXICO CITY (CNN) -- A 44-year-old Bolivian drug addict and alcoholic who describes himself as a church minister was the sole person responsible for the brief hijacking Wednesday of a commercial jetliner, a Mexican official said.

The suspect, Josmar Flores Pereira, told authorities he hijacked the Boeing 737 jet because the date -- September 9, 2009, or 9/9/9, and 666 reversed -- held some significance for him, said Genaro Garcia Luna, the secretary for public safety.

"He said that because of that divine reference, he wanted to alert Mexico City of an earthquake," Garcia told reporters.
