History Rewritten (Original Thread)

How about these guys for the Aztec, Dutch, and Portuguese: Cuahtemoc (led a resistance after the death of Montezuma), William III of Orange (he married and co-reigned with Mary II in England and had a successful war against the English), Henry the Navigator (important Prince who helped spur on Portuguese Navigation, though he was never a monarch if I remember correctly) or if you want something more modern go with António de Oliveira Salazar (the dictator who established the Estado Novo).

Henry the Navigator is definitely a good candidate for Portugal, there is a very well made leaderhead for him too. Basically the main reason I haven't added more leaders to these two civs is that I know very little about them. I've made a note of your suggestions and when it's time for 0.5 I'll look them up.

The Aztecs are a different situation. I'm considering expanding them so that they represent more of the people and history of their region, rather than just the final pre-colonial empire. They'd start with Teotihuacan rather than Tenochtitlan for example and I'd probably rename them the Nahua (the name of the wider ethnic group including the Aztec, Toltec, Tlaxcaltec and more) or possibly even Mexica/Mexicans. I'm holding off choosing additional leaders until I decide for sure what I'm doing here, though Topiltzin will most like be one of them.

As far as other Civs go: Tupi, Zapotec (though I think this may be too many Mexican Civs), Olmec, Mapuche, I'm not sure if you have a Scandinavian Civ... or something to represent the Kalmar Union, and of course there are various North American Indian tribes you could add. It'd be hard to choose just 2 of these.

I did start work on an Anasazi/Apache civ back in 0.1 but I gave up on it as I just couldn't get enough decent art together. That's probably the only North American civ that's a strong enough candidate for inclusion. I'll have to see how the Aztec remake goes before considering another Mesoamerican civ.

I'm leaving Scandinavia to be represented by the Vikings (I should probably rename them). They're likely to get a third leader at some point, someone post-Medieval like Margrete I or Gustav Adolf.

Well, the game speeds are different. My proof: 30 turns to research Animal Husbandry on Epic. I was not using a scenario.

And the El Cid AI is almost done - by tomorrow or even tonight I could finish it.

Problem with the El Cid AI: When I try to add text for him to say, I copied and pasted Isabella's first contact text, changed it to say <Tag>AI_DIPLO_FIRST_CONTACT_LEADER_EL_CID_1</Tag> and wrote in something different. I have searched all over for another mention of that, but I can't find where else I need to make changes for this to work.

Well game speeds are defined in a file Assets/XML/GameInfo/CIV4GameSpeedInfo.xml. History Rewritten doesn't even contain that file, and will thus use the default settings of BTS. Has anyone else noticed this happening? What's the default supposed to be for epic speed?

The diplomacy texts are called in a different file: Assets/XML/GameInfo/CIV4DiplomacyInfos.xml. At the moment there is no entry for El Cid in it as he had no diplotext to call. I've already made several changes to that file for 0.4 so it's best that I add him to it as your copy will be out of date. If you write the text I'll link them up :)

If you decide to do that, please note that the Hopi not the Apache are the probable descendants of the Anasazi. The Apache are related to the Navajo, both of which are late incomers compared to the Hopi.

That file is confusing... OK, I'll upload my El Cid AI and El Cid Game Text.

Oh, and the bio is not finished.

Thanks heaps! He's in 0.4 :)

I did know this but apparently I forgot. Thanks for the reminder! I might have another go at this civ eventually, probably after 1.0 though.

What will the difference between 0.5 and 1.0 ?

What will the difference between 0.5 and 1.0 ?

Probably not much at all. 0.5 will be the last beta version, in it I'll be going through the mod throughly adding all the missing text, citylists, UBs, a few leaders and stuff like that. Basically polishing and finishing everything that's already in. I might add in the new wonders too if they're close enough to completion by then.

1.0 will just be 0.5 with any reported bugs fixed and released soon after on the main forums for PC users as well. Depending how smooth it all goes I might add in Poland for 1.0 too. I'll resume adding other new features in 1.1 and so forth.

FYI I applied those fixes so the PC version loads but it comes up "different version of the mod" in multiplayer games with the Mac version (both with and without applying the same fixes). It comes up with different civs and art and weird stuff like that, and then goes almost instantly out of sync. I have not tried a new game from scratch so it's possible it might work then...

I've also found that 0.3 on the mac side crashes quite consistently but 0.2 crashes only rarely (depending on how far along the game is it would seem). So i'm guessing it's load related but it still doesn't make sense to me that my friends with lower specced computers don't crash...

Maybe .4 will magically fix it :P

Yeah it will have to be a new game, changing anything at all in an existing one would cause havoc like you're seeing. At least I assume so.

Hopefully, I've optimized and fixed things a fair amount in 0.4 but I'm not sure if it's to the extent that it could fix your crashes. I guess we'll see in a few days. Btw, do the people that you play with use Macs or PCs?

One small feedback : on "Eurasia" map, Tibet has no starting place...

Some maps were difficult to locate a feasible starting position for Tibet. I think that was the one where the Tibetan plateau was entirely mountains so I couldn't place them at all. I'll double check though.

Entirely mountains, oh my God

I was thinking to make a marvelously well defended Kingdom of the mountains ;)

It's just 3-4 people in my family, one has a new macbook pro 13 (last gen), one has an older white macbook (2 generations ago), and one has a 15" macbook pro (2 generations ago). I have a new (current gen) white macbook with snow leopard (all the others have leopard).

So no PCs, and I'm the only one with bootcamp set up.

Oh, one more problem...

I can't access the maps.

If the maps are not showing up in the Play Scenario menu that probably means the mod is not installed in the right location. Check the first post, the location changed in 0.3. If you do have it in the right location then I don't know, they should just appear in the Play Scenario menu.

And none of them are having issues? I was wondering if it could be related to a MacBook vs MacBook Pro graphics card but if they're running fine on even older MacBooks then it's not likely to be that. Have you done a hardware/memory test? I'm not ruling out that it's a problem in HR or anything but if you are the only person having this level of regular crashes we'd need to explore the possibility.

hmm how do I go about doing such a thing? what's the best tool to run such a check on mac?

I'm not sure actually. I know Apple used to put a Hardware Test on the CD/DVD that came with your computer, you could access it by putting the disk in and hold down 'D' as the computer boots. I don't know if they still do this or not, I've lost the original disk for my MBP.

In the latest version, the one in your signature, the El Cid AI is not there. It is still the inaccurate one. The greeting text is also missing.

That's still 0.3. I've put your changes into 0.4 which I should be releasing later this week. Just got some tidy up and testing to do.
