HOF Version 3 - "Test Run"

Arexander, can you give me an estimate on how long a turn takes to play? I'm not familiar with this scenario. I might be interested to play, if it doesn't take more than an hour.
And perhaps I could be only a temporary substitute for as long as you are busy? Once spring break starts, you could take over from me again?!

Cheers, Lanzelot

Arexander, Sorry to see you leave! And appreciate you doing the right thing too! These games can be time consuming but meant to be fun when one has the time to spend and enjoy! We have all been there!! Good luck with your studies and do continue to follow the thread to see how things turn out!!!
And don't forget to play the solitaire versions when time allows to continue to gain experience! I look forward to playing HOF with you in the future!!

I'd suggest that perhaps Semental take over Germany if he is able or if not Knutis do so. We might be waiting awhile for a replacement??? Thoughts?

I hadn't seen Lanz's post when I made mine. So Lanz...if you got what it takes then we'd be glad to have you! But be warned..this is not for the weak of heart!! Germany has a ton of units fighting on several fronts. I'd suggest you read Eric A's development notes on the threads listed at the beginning of this one to see what this version of HOF is about!! And if it seems manageable then email Arexander for his password. Then contact Knutis as he is your ally!!!

Cheers!

Lanz, I'm afraid I need to drop out completely before the summer begins. I need to get some more sleep as 6-7 hours per night isn't enough for high school studies.

The turn times are about 5-15 minutes depending on the amount of action and notes needed to be done. But I'm just a starter here so you might take less than that. :)

Glad to have you. My Russian turns are running about 1/2 hour.

Don't worry: from the first impression of this game it looks like it will still be "in process" at the end of the summer... ;) In fact, the Epic Epsilon game is currently going into its fifth year and still playing...

Well, when I was a starter, my turns where much shorter than these days... I observe on myself that the more I progress in terms of experience, the more time I need for my turns, cause there's always so much to consider. Or as a wise man once said: "The more you know the more you realize that you know nothing."

But 15-30 minutes looks ok. If you give me this weekend to read Eric's notes, download everything (first need to buy a new USB stick to carry everything home, as I'm currently on a 56K modem at home, which rules out any download bigger than 1MB...) and familiarize myself a bit, I'm ready to play next week?!

I'll send you PMs for the email addresses and the password shortly.
Cheers, Lanzelot

Well I don't usually have that much time so maybe that's why my turn times are so small. :p

Lanz, I've sent you a PM.

Love it...the Axis players are already squabbling!!! Good news!! And Lanz....this game isn't about building....its all about destroying things!! Just ask your ally Knutis!!! He's all about killing poor innocent Chinese and down on their luck Americans and CW forces!! Knutis...he's a real "Hard Case"!!!
Don't turn out like him!!

Cheers!

I started a little Hotseat test game on the weekend and played a handful of turns. Took a while, as I first had to explore the tech tree, read about the wonders and the different units a bit etc, but now turns should be faster, now that I have all the relevant knowledge. (I'm contradicting myself here, ain't I...?! )

I think Knutis was the last one who played. Can you send me the current turn?

Eric, I suppose one of the main purposes of this game is to get feedback from us, allowing you to "refine" the scenario, is that right? Do you want us to post any comments/suggestions here?

semental: don't worry, I'm on your side and will stick to you in unbreakable "Nibelungentreue" until we will prevail or go down in flames side by side! (Although I must admit: in my test game I did feel at times like blasting away those annoying minor axis units which kept getting into the way all the time, blocking my roads and interfering with my attack...)
(Note for you others: I just eliminated semental in our "Rise of Japan" game...)

Lanzelot:
The purpose of the test is check that the scenario is well balanced.
And also to shake out any bugs or omissions. For example, Sully found
that the civilopedia entry for the "Chinese Replacements" depot was
missing.

Hey Eric since this is a place to put down things that might need refining. The airfield on Australia below Port Moresby got taken over by the Malaria there. It's a little annoying that to take it back I'd need to go to war with nature now.

Other than that I haven't seen anything.

I notice one problem for the USA.

USA have the wonder hoover dam at start (put a hydro plant in each city), but hydro plant needs factory to be effective... and USA can't build factories because they have a special factory (manufact plant ? not sure about the name)...
So hydro plant can give their 50% production bonus only in the cities that start the game with the classic factory...

I played the current turn and mailed it to Eric. I'll hold back the game report for a moment, because there is something on which I first want to get Eric's opinion.

Here only a few general comments on the scenario (mainly based on my test game):

  • Right click on a "Division" unit shows the Civilopedia entry for the corresponding "Corps" unit. This was a bit confusing for me at first because the A/D/M values don't match and I was unsure about which source to "trust"...
  • Two misspellings of German words: Fuhrer --> Führer, Kreigsmarine --> Kriegsmarine
  • Pedia entry for Yalta: The the Livadia Palace...
  • The game has a V1 unit, but how about the V2? I think the V2 was much more important, even after the war was already over: the Americans had captured Wernher von Braun and his team, and the V2 eventually became the foundation of America's Saturn and Apollo programs.

Question: "Bautrupps" can't be used east of Warsaw, but ordinary "Arbeiter" are ok?!
