How do you pronounce usernames?

I've always wondered how people pronounce my username.

I usually don't bother with your name, I always just identify you by your avatar haha

Most people don't understand IPA.

Well most people should learn as this thread is entirely useless without it.

rugbyLEAGUEfan, did you intend for people to mentally shout your username or was it just supposed to emphasize your support for rugby leagues over rugby itself?

Well let's go waaaay back to the start heh.

Firstly, I put absolutely no thought into my user name, rugbyleaguefan, whatsoever. I signed up because I was right into Civ4 and needed some questions answered. I had never signed up for anything on the internet and quickly thought "What do I like? I like rugby league". Sorted. I didn't expect to hang around so I just went with convenience.

Thus I got stuck with a lame ass name that I kind of wear as a badge of honor, a tribute to my lame side so to speak. I take solace that brother NBAfan is on the same page.

Then after I started hanging here and getting to know people, my love of "rugby" was mentioned (I would assume to the uneducated that the "league" part just referred to a league/competition of rugby, not a different game) and I felt, since it is dream of mine that one day America will take to this great game, maybe if I capitalize LEAGUE, the odd yank may get curious and wonder what the hell is going on. This has not turned out to be the case.

So no, it's not to have it shouted. It is for reasons as unimpressive as one may imagine. But I ain't changing, rLf and the Het man are here to stay!

...Antilogic -> æ̃n.ti.lɑɑɑɑɑa.d͡ʒʒʒʒʒʒʒʒɪɪk
...
Antilogic - the d is supposed to be a voiced postalveolar affricate followed by a near-close near-front unrounded vowel.

I'm not strong with IPA (an old roommate of mine was really good with languages, I picked up what I could but it wasn't enough), but I'm all :smug: that my pronunciation is the longest.

I've long said "cyber-x-khan", as well as "Ay-leh-doo", "tak-eye-sis" and so on. It's clearly the superior way to do so. :)

haha, very good. You should certainly feel flattered that I actually bother to say the full name! :p

I've always wondered how people pronounce my username. I pronounce it thus:

/sai.bɹiks.kan/

For those people who don't know IPA: sai-bricks-khan

If I'm feeling sophisticated:

/sai.bɽiks.xan/

The <r> would be similar to a Scottish one, not as rolled, and the <kh> would be like the German <ch>.

I don't even try with your name brah. One to many X for me :)

This thread is entirely useless with IPA.

I don't think I pronounce many of the names here in any particularly interesting way. I have difficulty with Leoreth (in that I have no idea how I pronounce it, though I certainly don't go with Leo-reth, which is probably what most people do).

Ailedhoo is interesting. Alley-doo is what it is to me, but I'm fairly sure it's meant to start with the past participle of ail.

I don't pronounce Zelig as I would zebra, but more as an American would pronounce zebra.

Chukchi Husky just loses the 'chi' for a 'y'.

I completely garble Synsensa. I think I generally subvocalise it as something like Sin-sen-ee-sthia, though I generally don't think about the latter half.

Virote Consortium.

cybrxkhan I identify by avatar.

Seen-zen-za
Ay-lead-hoo
Chuck-chee Husky

sigh-bricks-khan
Special-K (kidding, it is Joan (westernised) K)
Zack - Zack
Rugby League fan - exactly as you would expect
Takhisis - Tack-sis

Takhisis -> tak-EE-siss
Borachio -> buh-RAY-kyeuh
rugbyLEAGUEfan -> rug-beah-LEUHG-fan
hobbsyoyo -> OBBS-yuh-yeuh
Virote_Considon -> vree-OH-konss-EE-duhn
Mise -> MEEz
Synsensa -> suhn-SEHN-suh
Quackers -> KWAH-kuhz
Ziggy Stardust -> zig-ee-STEUH-dusst
cardgame -> KEUHD-geuhm
Zelig -> ZEH-lug
Antilogic -> an-EE-lo-jik
Leoreth -> LEE-o-reth
Crezth -> KRE-ZFF Z-THUH JUTH that guy
:lmao: this is hilarious!!! :lol::lol:

I associate y'all with avatars more than names. For the most part, pronunciation doesn't enter my head. A few exceptions....

Same here, come to think of it. In my head whenever I imagine everybody's "real" face, I imagine it's the avatar. Which can get pretty surreal depending on the avatar. And weird when people switch avatars.

Well most people should learn as this thread is entirely useless without it.

IPA's also good to learn in general, anyways, in case you need to quickly figure out how to pronounce something in another language.

I only learned it on the side due to my conlanging, but it's actually not really that hard if you have a bit of time to spare especially if you know at least two languages, and particularly two very different languages.

I was wondering how you wanted that pronounced. Actually I pronounced in my head just as you described :) Lucky guess on my part

Wait wait wait....so you decided to change your username, but you changed it from rugbyleaguefan to rugbyLEAGUEfan??? Badge of honor indeed. :lol:

Owen Glyndwr -> O - win Glend - were
Dachs -> Dacks
cybrxkhan -> sigh - burr - zhan
Gucumatz -> goo - coo - matz

You got my name right mostly :thumbsup: Although I would suggest using a "K" instead of a c

Goo-koo-matz
