Spoiler :
I'm not entirely sure how Bremen lost it's core... perhaps there was a cultural change.

Just started a new Byzantium game a few minutes ago.
Made a bit of royal marriage with some countries to get a few acquaintances and legitimacy, a bit of fighting with Candar and...
BLAM : "Sire, we entered into a Personal Union with France".

Talk about a great start :D

Edit : and five minutes later, my heir dies... So I find comfort into the arms of a maid, and the new heir is 5-9-9

How are you ever going to deploy more troops than the Big Blob Bleu to avoid being buried in insults?

Just keep them at war; they won't send insults if they're presently at war.

France, the big bleu attack dog.

Use them to kill the hell out of everything? Or at least until you're strong enough to not be constantly insulted.

The Ottomans are easy to conquer as long as the Byzantines are still alive (and in my case as Italy from Milan, your vassal :p). You just have to destroy their army, put your navy in the Sea of Marmarra (or whatever the sea is that is between Thrace & Bithniya), and conquer their Europe holdings. Then, if my plan goes correctly, you just finish them off :p

Meh, once the Ottomans are conquered, he can steamroll through anyone else in Anatolia.

I only played Byzantium once, and the Ottomans were just the first challenge, but by far not the most dangerous. To give you an idea, Golden Horde was the defender of the Sunni faith and the Mamluks were also guaranteeing every Muslim minor.

I had a landforce limit of ~60, the Golden Horde threw me a stack of 90 followed by one of 60, not to mention the Mamluks flooding from Syria.

No, that wasn't a pleasant experience, it took a lot of reload backs and scorched land to finally get White Peace with them, and after 5 years they often just declared Holy War again. That whole game was insanely nerve-wrecking.

Yeah, the Ottomans are only tough the first time, and easy after that, but the Mamluks and GH - or whoever ends up being cock of the walk around there by the time you're done - are much more of a pain in the tuchas.

The worst wars for the Byzantines are in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, when you're big enough to border multiple serious rivals, but not big enough to easily kill all of them at the same time. After that, it's more or less smooth sailing, with most wars being micromanagement unless you deliberately let powerful enemies survive long enough to become legitimate threats.

Their own navy is far too big for me to get the control of the sea, but I managed to use their previous wars against Timurids and the Golden Horde to jump on them when their army was tiny.

As for France, yeah they're sending quite a bit of insults, I think I'll have to find a way to keep them busy in wars against some foes. Maybe I can use them to steamroll Italy.

Well, I just finished my war with the Ottomans, Morocco, and Astrakhan (the second one was the target, the first joined in against me, and the third did too and was the war leader). Here's what I got.
Morocco- all of their territories but Safi and their capital (Marrakeh? I forget).

Ottomans-Macedonia, Larissa, Janina, Corfu, Athens, and Achea; plus Nis, which flipped to me mid-war, and I already owned Morea from a previous war.

Astrakhan- without even laying a finger on them, 875 ducats :p

Unifying Russia as Muscovy. I just finished colonizing one of the Khaganates out of existence, and now I'm working on subduing the others long enough to fight a major war with Lithuania over my western cores.

I love patriot rebels :3

There I was, thinking I'd have to DoW Catholic Burgundy (as Prot. Netherlands) and risk another horrific war with Castille to get my cores, when I got this idea. Flanders (in Brabant) was in a PU under me, and I had the Espionage NI, so I decided to see what might happen if I funded some Patriots in Burgundy's Flemish provinces.

Long story short, three provinces - including the two cores owned by Burgundy - flipped to Flanders, which I inherited less than a year later. :D
