That guy crash is jusy hilarious :D

Anyway Fetus, by your logic, Sanaz must be the wisest person to ask what America should be doing, afterall, he has seen most of it..

Bah, it's not hard for intelligent people, to find out what's going on in other parts of the world. Of course traveling might help, but it's not like it's required.

Now that's nice, now we all will know, that there's at least one intelligent man in all board who knows so much about different cultures & nations :D

Of course it's not "required" but it's a damned sight better than judging a country based on hearsay, films or television :mischief:

Who said hearsay, films and telli? you did. Of course that's factors too, but what ever happened to having American friends? What ever happened to reading unbiased newspapers such as Metro, which accurately tells us what's going on around the world?

privatehudson said:
Actually, Crash did :p
I must have overlooked that, but hey, you said it too ;)

Only to say it was no substitute for the real thing :)

But damnit, I never said that was a substitute!

I got some friends who had lived in USA, but i haven't heard sth from them which i didn't knew already...

I've never been to the USA, and don't plan to in any mid-term future. Never say "never", but so far that's out of my mind and heart.

Now I fail to see why this is directly related to "knowing what the USA should do". I don't have to go and see St. Louis's food culture (hello, Strider ! :p ) to have an opinion on what the USA are doing in Iraq ? I surely don't have to go to Chicago and talk to SN so as to find out if the USA should stay out of the Kyoto protocol ? Why should I go to Boston, admire the Mayflower and talk to Ginger_Ale so as to have an idea on the motives of the Pilgrims ?

It's just me, but France is flooded with American culture, America is everywhere : food, movies, music, TV sitcoms, the English language, the Internet, etc, etc, etc... It's been more than 3 years since we started having American students at home (already said it), and each time I tell them "look, America is everywhere", and they just have to nod. Now I'm not saying I shouldn't go to the USA, and I'm not saying that going there won't help me understand it more. But it's the last country I need to go to in order to improve my knowledge of it. Surely that does make sense. And should I ever get there, I would do some tourist stuff like be impressed with New York city jungle, but then quit with it, and go do my trip in a cool way, ie. visiting places that saw some culture I like (alternative rock, here I come), and go make fun of Texas and its sheriffs. Couldn't resist...

BTW, should I start a poll with European countries ? Is Europe as known in the USA ? I for one doubt it.

And you probably tried really hard to stay objective, or even positive when they told you about America

Pretty much all of the Western states, a few Midwestern states, and two Eastern states.

Vice versa

Wasn't implying you did :mischief:
Then why did you bring it about?

Oh and to crash, the difference between us is that I don't have to try, and definitly not hard, to see good sides of America.
