Winner, does God have to be useful to exist?

Take religion out of it - couldn't a divine being exist (or a spiritual world) that really has no impact on our quest for knowledge? Although, you could argue that then it becomes irrelevant, but just curious what you think about that?

Religious enough

On the other hand, the God-theory has never really been useful in any practical sense. Sometimes I wonder why God revealed us only crappy information like the 10 commandments or that gory stories contained in the Old Testament. Why didn't he reveal how genetics works? Or how to create antibiotics?

He promises eternal happiness. Thats a whole lot better then anything any athiest theory offers humanity.

You spend a lot of time thinking up insults, don't you?

If the God theory serves no purpose, doesn't explain anything and has no practical use whatsoever, why should anybody support it?

It's just like with my invisible etheric birds who carry objects and thus create force that we observe as gravity - God is redundant, he's not needed to explain anything. That's when we use Occam's razor and cut him out of the picture. Bye bye God, we don't need you. Smite us if you can.

Give me one reason why should I believe in God or even contemplate his existence, when the concept of God is not needed to explain anything? I am more likely to believe in cosmic strings postulated by the string theory than in God, because God just doesn't fit anywhere in the Universe.

So stop asking me if he could exist and answer me why should we even think he exists?

Some people just like philosophical discussions for the sake of philosophical discussions. And some people (myself included) just like contemplating God's existence for the sake of contemplating God's existence. There doesn't have to be a practical impact.

As to why we should think a divine creature(s) exist is because we still have no idea as to the origins of life or of the universe. That doesn't mean a spiritual being does exist, but surely you've asked yourself (if the Big Bang theory is even close to true) what caused it and what was there before it? Those answers don't have to be spiritual, but they could be, couldn't they?

He promises eternal happiness.

Does he? Where is he, I want to ask him about few things concerning the deal. Oh, he's not there - I have to go to Church, speak with his priests and have faith etcetera etcetera.

You know, this sounds awfuly as some sort of a fraud...

Thats a whole lot better then anything any athiest theory offers humanity.

How's an empty promise in exchange of life in fear a good deal, that's really baffling.

You spend a lot of time thinking up insults, don't you?

No, it comes naturally when I think about how stupid, ridiculous, insane, abhorrent, pathetic, primitive, perverse and poisonous religion is :mischief:

Where does fear come into the deal?

Besides, we have the bible, and thats definatly true.

I don't feel any of those things, your making a judgement about something you've never experienced.

Where does fear come into the deal, anyway?

Basicly the whole "You are going to burn for eternity" bit... Brought to you by the all loving GOD.

If you assume that Hell exists, and are taking that from the bible, you must also take from the bible that it was not inteneded for humans.

Then why am I always threatened with hell fire by theists who find out I am athiest?

Because of the large amount of people who don't know how to convert people.

Many christians seem to think people will just react by supporting them, rather then be put off. I'm mildly sorry

Nothing against you... just the religon. Why do I need converting? I dont go door to door trying to get people to become athiests. Live and let live.

I apologize but they bug us to go out and do that sort of thing. I don't but some people take it to heart.

I'm a dedicated Atheist. I used to be an agnostic, and before that a Christian, but the sheer ridiculousness of the intellectually bankrupt position of religion pushed me past being Agnostic.

Well, for atheists, there's no sense of peril for religious people if they stay religious. For Christians, it's a direct command from God to go out and spread the Gospel in order to save as many souls as possible. Threatening with hellfire is a horrible way to try to convert someone though.

I beg to differ, many an atheist believe that they(religious people) are in fact in great peril if they stay religious.

An extreme example, if the 19 hijackers at one point decided that agnosticism was better then Sunni Islam, would at least one of them avoided the personal peril they subjected upon themselves and 3000 innocent people?
