Fear of God is one of the central tenets of Christianity.
Uh, it's love of God that's one of the central tenets, not fear. Unless fear is a kind of love.

On what basis do you assume that rational argument and the scientific method is the only path to discovering truth?

Why's going up the only way how to climb to the top of a mountain? :crazyeye:

You can use irrational ("alternative") methods like:

- stare at the mountain and hope that it will get lower
- pray to God and ask him to teleport you to the top instantly
- meditate and hope that the power of your mind will open a wormhole to the top

... but in the end, none of this nonsense will work. Rational thought and scientific method is the only proven way of finding the truth about things and processes which take place in our Universe.

Religion offers no alternative, just superstition, a lot of spiritual crap and false hopes for the price which is your soul (not the immortal, spiritual soul, but soul in the psychological sense).

It is sad, really, how many people waste their lives hoping they make up for it in the next one, which will never come. And the world would be much better if they wasted just their lives and didn't force their foolishness on others.

Then why do people call themselvs "God fearing" not "God loving"?

Some verse in the NT says the OT is void. :dunno:

Well, didn´t Jesus more or less scrap the OT? His moral and ethics is definietly way more advanced and developed than the hit-and-miss-assembly of sensible ethics and primitive barbarism in OT.

I have not been to church in months since my employment asigned me to work weekends :-/.

Wait, when did they scrap the Old Testament?

Jesus did not came to abolish the OT, he came to fulfill them (or whatever the expert Christians; MobBoss, Classical Hero. Said)

Mammon will be pleased

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (Matthew 5:17)

Sounds like the OT is still in full swing.

I think I'm going to ask a theologian ;)

Hell awaits...

Funny, when I first read this, I thought you meant the Off-Topic forum and wondered why would Jesus want to abolish it

I am too lazy, but it would be interesting to see how the number of mentally ill people on this forum changed.

The poll is flawed

I'm with warpus here, I'm proud to see that so many posters on CFC are still so ever vigilant against poorly worded and unaccountable polls. The battles rages onward, even if you would consider that crazy Winner.

What battle?

You mean ignorance/superstition (usually called "faith") vs. rationality/science?

Yes, sadly many people will rather live their (only) lives in fear of some God/Gods than to admit that there is no such thing.

Not reading ANYTHING from this thread but the poll choices, I am unhappy that "religious" is the opposite of "atheist" which it isn't!

Yes it is.

Religious -> there is God/Gods/other forms of supernatural entities
Atheist -> there are no such entities

Now tell me how these claims are not opposite to each other.

Sorry, my definition of religion does not coincide with yours! INVALID REQUEST.

re·li·gion
n.
1.
a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.
2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.

My definition seems to be the generally accepted definition. What's your definition?

A religion doesn't require a God. Lots have them, but not all.

See the definition. It doesn't have to be a God in personalized form - all sorts of supernatural, spiritual forces count.

It doesn't matter if it's "the Force", "the spirits of the forest" or "positive life energy".
