How to check military strength

Is there any way I can check some civilization's military strength apart from that "who has the pointiest sticks" that keeps coming up?
Also if I can't, at what periods in time does the pointiest stick info come up?

You can't find out the exact strength, but if you go to your advisers, the military adviser will tell you about the relative strength of the AIs' armies. "I'm not sure they have any army at all", "I think I just saw their only unit", "They're about as strong as us", "They are stronger than us".

(IIRC pointiest sticks comes up every 50 turns? I'm not sure. Fairly sure it's a multiple of 50 in any case.)

Without mods you have to guess, I play without mods and just rely on the Demographics screen.

If you're last in that sense, time to build a few units.
If you're in the middle, time to build a few units.
If you are first, build a few more units to take them all or for a diff victory, hold on to your current military and upgrade when you can.

You should send a spy to their capitol. Oh wait you have to wait for the expansion.

I think this is actually something they specifically left out of the main game (the charts from civ 4). That way it would make espionage in the expansion much more interesting. But until then, all you have is soldiers on the borders. Be wary of open borders treaties... the AI will use these to find the size of your army.

Check not just the Demographics, but your military advisor as well. If he is saying "armies could wipe us off the planet" in the context of a Domination/Science spree, then you better seriously start spamming out units by the dozens.

Info addict is the first mod that comes to mind. It also gives more accurate information on other areas of gameplay such as :c5science: output, :c5culture: output, :c5food: output or current trade deals each AI has running.

i would highly recommend InfoAddict to everyone, it's extremely helpful if you want to keep up on your economy, military, diplomatic deals, and those of the AIs

There hasn't been anything to suggest that espionage will allow you to see the exact military strength of another civilization. I dare say it was left out of the base game on purpose, yes, but not because it was a hole for espionage to fill.

Does anyone know if any info addict version is compatible with 1.0.0.17 version of Civ5?

Im afraid if I update the game to the newest version my load games will not be compatible with it and won't load.

Yes. I always felt the precise info about opponents provided by Civ4 shouldn't be there. It's obviously helpful, but if we do use real life analogy, there is no way to get access to it, especially not at early stages of the game.

Do not be afraid of updating your game, the game has moved on in a huge way since 1.0.0.17 and you are missing out in a huge way by not updating.

I would suggest you update and enjoy an improved gaming experience! (with or without infoaddict).

I feel if your spies should get military info, but it should be a process which takes some time and effort.

Yeah, using espionage is fine. But not just like that, out of nowhere you know exactly on what turn your opponent discovered BW and how many axes he currently has.

Sure, that would not be at all interesting. The spy would formulate a picture over time. Even if he or she was the best spy in the world it would be a process. I have a feeling they will be developing espionage over time. Patches and DLCs most likely will add more abilities. Religion is far more interesting at the moment. The devs need to balance the two out so they are both equally fun features to use.

Dont listen to your military advisor. The game only takes into account the total strength of his combined units, and not the AI's total incompetence as to how to use said units.

@nokmirt
Have to admit, my expectations regarding religion implementation are not very high currently. Although I'm not very familiar with everything is going on there. Info flood in G&K forum is a bit overwhelming, but I'll catch up as I play. Espionage, however, might add some depth to player-AI interaction and neutralize the feeling you play against one generic artificial intelligence rather than against 7 opponents. More wishful thinking, I guess. :D We'll see.

I am not sure what to think about religion either. After listening to the latest episode of Polycast, some of the enhancer beliefs sound pretty decent. The Great Prophet is pretty powerful. If you take the time to produce them the benefits are quite substantial when spreading your religion. They also remove other religions at the same time. If I understood correctly, they can be used four times in four different cities. If anyone realizes I am mistaken about that let me know.

I hope that with espionage all AI civs begin to formulate their own agenda, sending their spies on various missions. This could really add some depth to diplomacy etc. And yes, it would feel like each AI civ sort of has a mind of their own.
