I run into the nit-pickers far more on forums like this than I do in real life. In both circumstances ignoring them works best. I have rarely been in a situation where ignoring them is not an otpion. But situations at school and work have prevented me from just walking away. Then I say something like "Sure, I hear you." and drop it. If they persist then I follow up with disingenuous short answers like Yep, Right, Uh huh, OK... If they persist and/or I grow perturbed, then I let my aggravation be heard in my voice and I use words like Yeperdo, Askippy, Riiiiight...
In work situations where I Must disscuss something of importantance and a person or persons sidetrack the conversation with unimportant nit-picks; then I try to remain calm and focused so I can drive the conversation back to the relevant matter at hand. It hasn't always been easy and sometimes using visuals on paper, or dry erase board helped. And there have been times where I had to seek a third party to act as mediator.
I don't know if any of this helps your situation. And a persons motivation for the nit-picking affects what can be done to limit it. If they are just trying to feel self-important and it doesnt matter if they are right or wrong, then its easy to shut them down by just agreeing with them. But if the discussion has some importance then you just have to deal with it and drive on. I have no further advice for that since the various personalites involved, their motivations, and the circumstances all affect how best to deal with it. Just stay calm, focused, use visual aids if possible, and call in a mediator if necessary.
Oh and I think it helps sometimes to censor your words to their mindset. Use their terminology and phrases. Put things into a perspective that you think they will better understand. And never put them on the defensive. Do not give them any reason to defend their ideas. Debate should be a discussion of opposing ideas, not a verbal quarrel. When it degenerates to that point, the discussion becomes about who is right and wrong. So then the topic of the discussion becomes irrelevant, which makes the discussion pointless.

I have the same problem with a Chinese kid who studied in Europe and came back three years behind his classmates and is now struggling to catch up. He never speaks (really), except to say "it's boring" or "It's no good". Strange for a Chinese kid; not so strange for a Western kid.
He's 17. How old is yours OP? Maybe they should communicate and they can bore the cr@p out of each other until they get tired of it!
