UPDATE 13 788 AF
Red Army?
In Tiesto the Emperor is determined to expand his land at all costs. Raising a large army of ill-trained and ill-equipped troops he gives them a long speech about defending the motherland from the barbarians and the glory they are about to win. He then sends all his new recruits, with a few more experienced troops, off to war conquering the neighbouring tribes. Life appears cheap as he repeats the Syldavian tactic of just sending them off to take on the barbarians head on. Unlike Syldavia there are no mountains here making it more likely to work, but the poor training of the troops mean they suffer horrendous casualties. Who cares though as there are more peasants to recruit.
(Tiesto: -11 thousand infantry (untrained)).
Open isolationism
Having become aware of the other nations around them Laconia opens up for trade, though severely restricted. Only the northern city of Thepsis is open to trade for foreigners with ships arriving at other ports under their own responsibility as they might be confiscated. Whilst merchants in other coastal areas arent too pleased with this, is has become a massive benefit for Thepsis. Whilst there are no tariffs and thus no taxes, the amount of sailors arriving and the amount of deals made does equal economic prosperity for everyone and, eventually, parts of that prosperity makes it into the pockets of the state
(+Thepsis eco-centre).
A new system of roads are also initiated, partly to tie the nation more together, and partly to keep the slaves occupied.
Money is power
Having secure trade agreements with Tirpi, the Ironalians repeat their tried and tested idea of economic domination by heavily increasing trade with the Tirpans, though its more a matter of goods leaving Ironal and gold returning. Missionaries and bards also start moving into Tirpi to spread tales of Ironal and their amazing culture. This causes massive problems for the Tirpans as they see much of their wealth begin to leave the country
(-1 Tirpi economy). Attempting to protect their nation from what is seen as a subtle kind of warfare the Tirpans have mobilized their army and moved it to the southern border. As nothing overtly hostile has been done by the Ironalians they havent invaded, but they are clearly not happy.
Elsewhere, things are more peace. Having accomplished a breakthrough to a new river, the Empire has relocated many people there, though many more are perfectly happy to move on their own accord with the promises of land and riches to be made by trading with the tribes inhabiting these, until now, unknown lands.
Horses, horses and more horses.
In ThLex Zamzerei they are crazy about horses. Not only is the vast majority of the military consisting of cavalry units, more and more are being recruited. As if that wasnt enough they craftsmen of the nation have now started exporting small statuettes of horses and something they call centaurs to Imperia and Dashtaka. To top it off they also sell rugs, possibly made partially from horse hairs, with embroided pictured of horses. Rumours even have it that some of them sleep with the horses as they cant stand to be parted, though those are thankfully unconfirmed.
At the same time as their export picks up they also start convincing the neighbouring tribes that they should pay tribute and join with them. Faced with some 2000 horsemen carrying nasty, pointed weapons this was an easy decision for many tribes and as they join and pay tribute it has a positive effect on the economy, particularly when considering it also opens up new markets
(+1 economy)
War, however, was coming
(see below)
Der Kaiser returns
As Alan Richards replaced his father as Emperor in Imperia he was determined to not make the same mistakes as his father and instead lead Imperia forth into a bright future. He had many ideas he wanted to implement and one of the first was the release of a new currency, the Richmark. The coins were struck with different values, the Richmark being the highest. One Richmark is the equivalent of 100 yards causing some confusion for people as they havent started using the metric system yet.
Even so, the new coins were minted and as they had a slightly lower ratio of precious metals it meant it meant a nice boost to the state treasury.
Confident in a more peaceful future the majority of the military is recalled from active borderduty and instead garrisoned in the cities to protect them and assist the local peacekeepers. Some 4000 troops are also sent on a trek through uncharted lands looking for the ocean. Nobody is really sure why so many troops are sent through barbarians lands rather than sailing on the river or agreeing a right of passage with Dashtaka.
The move also turns out to be unwise as Imperia suddenly finds herself attacked from multiple directions
(see below)
Fighting for peace*1
In Ibe the government officials have spoken at length to the population promising them that a time of peace is almost at hand as the old lands of Ibe have almost been reunited. Only one last campaign remains before things are as they were meant to be. To assist in making things right once more, a large amount of the civilian militia
(+15 thousand militia) has been called up and told to prepare for war. This is no problem for the citizens, though there is a lot of grumbling as they are pulled out of the areas they have been trained to defend and reassigned to the standing army
(-1 confidence).
The militia and standing army are divided into four separate groups and told to prepare for the last campaign. The target this time is the peaceful republic of Pithal, a move that is dangerous and ambitious. The two armies are roughly even in size though the militia tip the scale in favour of the aggressor. Pithal, however, is fighting on its homeground and have the benefit of prepared positions. It was bound to be a bloody battle and both the troops, the officers and the king knew it.
2 of the groups strike into Pithal along separate courses seeking to apply overwhelming numbers, whilst a third group supported by a small force of cavalry attacked the Toran Federation. We will look at the cavalry force first.
Using a completely mounted force allowed the invaders great mobility and they used it to great success by raiding many isolated farms and villages. With many of their troops tied up in the province of Sorania resistance was basically non-existent and a brilliant plan was then put into effect. As scouts reported the Toran army approaching the cavalry force pulled back and went around the army into Sorania. With the population here to a large degree following the same religion as Ibe and the people having been oppressed by the Torans, the Ibeian army was hailed as liberators as the province revolted against their old leadership and joined with the liberators
(+10 thousand militia). In a short time the entire province was under the control of Ibe. While this was happening the Toran army had discovered that the army had moved around them and turned back toward Sorania. Even worse, they learnt of a much larger force that had attacked straight for the capital. Faced with the dilemma of choosing which way to go, the Toran commander decided that saving the capital had to be more important than keeping the Soranians down.
Rushing to meet the forces of general Trea, the Torans found that he had already advanced almost to the capital, but, at least, they were behind his forces with another force in front of them. Faced with armies on two sides, general Trea did the only thing he could and stopped his advance to face the onrushing Toran army. Outnumbered 2-1 the Torans refused to attack and prepared their own defences. As Trea tried to engage them they started retreating, but soon they couldnt retreat much further as the land behind them was in full revolt.
The two armies met near the village of Nookia in a bloody battle. At the end of the day general Trea could look around and proclaim victory. Allowing his troops a few days to recuperate he resumed his march on the capital. A lot of valuable time had been lost though and the defenders had dug in. Estimating the enemy position to be too strong for a direct assault he dug in to construct catapults and rams to aid in battering down the walls of the city.
Another offensive force was commanded by general Itop. He was ordered to advance on the Pithali capital and had did reasonably well though he had encountered the stiff opposition as the greater part of the Pithali army was deployed to protect the capital. The border guards has been easily overrun, but the first problem came as the population refused joining up with the Ibeian forces as they were happy enough living in Pithal and instead took up arms against them as they started burning villages. The two forces met not far from Pith and were roughly even in numbers, but with a slight advantage to the Pithali. Evenly matched in most aspects those few extra troops the Pithali had along with their cavalry and their intimacy with the terrain gave them the win in a bloody battle that saw approximately one third of the Ibeian army killed or wounded and on full retreat back. Pursued by the Pithali troops, Itop had to retreat back across the border as he sought to save his army by reaching defensive positions in Ibe itself. The close pursuit meant that every time he tried to stop, the Pithali cavalry was upon him, harassing his supplies and flanks meaning that eventually he was pushed back all the way to Isis.
On the southern front things were much the same as in the north, though here the Ibeians had the numerical advantage. Again, the population resisted and progress was slow, but it was made. After a series of skirmishes the army reached the city of Fona and laid siege to it. The strong defences in it made it impossible to encircle it as the forces would have been spread too thin. Instead they camped on the eastern side and prepared to assault it. The assault didnt go too well. With supplies arriving mainly from sea the defenders were well equipped and had plenty of food and in order to take a fortified town like this, then a slight numerical advantage isnt enough when there are skilled troops manning the walls. Predictably the assault was beaten back at horrible cost to the attackers. A breakout from the city supported by troops landed by ships behind the main Ibeian base put the troops under general Itop in a horrible position. Deciding to save his troops he abandoned his positions and pulled back to better defensive positions. Again, the troops of Pithali pursued the retreating forces and actually crossed the border.
(Ibe: -11000 infantry (trained), -5000 infantry (acceptable), -3000 infantry (poor), -18000 militia. Toran Federation: - 7000 infantry. Pithal: -4000 infantry (trained), -2000 infantry (poor), -7000 militia)
War on the Lake!
It started innocently enough as Calador slowly started sending less and less goods for trading claiming some vaguely defined domestic problems. Things soon escalated though as a massive force consisting of Caladonian and Mearl troops crossed the border into Imperia. Relations had never been the best and despite the change of leadership the ruling houses of Calador, Mearl and Zhuba didnt put much stock in the new leader being different. With Imperia signing alliance with ThLex-Zamzerei the Zhubans and Caladonians felt particularly threatened on several flanks. Joining together in alliance the three nations decided to do what they could to halt it.
The first strike came from the east. An immense army crossed the border without meeting any kind of resistance as no army forces were deployed to the area. The local population did however rise up, as no matter how much they might like or dislike their leaders, it was still their country and no armies should just come along in that way
(+10 thousand Imperia militia). Of course, against the trained Mearl army there was little they could do to stop them and after a few skirmishes they quickly ran for the hills.
As the army reached the provincial capital the local commander paled. He hadnt counted on an enemy army of that size. Content to starve the city out the Mearl forces started besieging it and spiced it up a bit with some fire arrows. After about 2 months, with no relief on the way, the city opened its gates and surrendered unconditionally.
As the army poured over the border the combined fleets of Zhuba and Calador engaged what could be found of the Imperian fleet. Outnumbered and crewed by sailors who had little notion of how to fight at sea the battle was one-sided from the start. As the dust cleared the entire Imperian fleet had vanished from the surface. Having gained naval supremacy the fleet initiated a complete blockade of the coast preventing many foreign ships from entering the ports. So far the economic damages caused to Imperia have been slight, but if the blockade remains, results are likely to be catastrophic.
Having secure the first province the army marched on Gregengrad. By now the Imperians had responded to the threat and recalled many of the troops to fight the invaders. Gathering them from all the provinces took precious time and by the time the army was ready it was almost too late. With the city of Gregengrad visible on the horizon, the two forces clashed. Still outnumbered, the Imperians had few chances. The Mearl were better trained and their generals easily as skilled as the Imperians. Remarkably enough the Imperians werent routed from the field. Fighting for their homes they found strengths they didnt know that they. Even so, the battle resulted in a draw with the advantage to the invaders. The Imperian army pulled back to Gregengrad as the invaders prepared to move on it.
(Imperia: -11000 infantry, -7000 militia, -1000 shockers, -500 cavalry, -10 ships. Calador: -2000 infantry, -1 ship (poor). Mearlekrol: -6000 infantry, -500 cavalry)
While the above was happening, the trio also struck against Imperias ally of ThLex-Zemzerei. The barbarian horsepeople were an unknown to a large degree, fighting in a completely different way than most other nations. Fearful for years of sudden attacks from their wild riders, many were arguing that something would need to be done. Also, with the attack on Imperia it would basically only be a matter of time before theyd come, so, an early strike made sense. A decent-sized force quickly moved on the relatively weakly border city capturing it with small losses, though some casualties were sustained fighting against the forces of a local warlord. Having taken the city the allied forced quickly started erecting massive defences to prevent any cavalry charges against it. As the first elements of the ThLex army arrived the found the city to be well defended against them and unsure of what to do they laid a ring around it whilst waiting for instructions.
(ThLex: -500 cavalry. Zhuba: -2000 infantry. Calador: -1000 infantry)
Random Events
Logi Khan encounters a Centaur making him feel lucky. True enough, he soon finds what is probably the prettiest woman on the planet and quickly makes her part of his harem
(+1 Luck
)
As their spartan way of life is written down, the Lacedonians feel more than ever that their way of life is the right one and feel more pleased with their supremacy
(+1 loyalty)
In Cironelle priests start spreading their religion and explaining the concepts of it using small words so that everybody understands it. The focus on the future rather than the past is appreciated by the people who expect their lives to get easier
(+1 happiness)
In Imperia the new ruler, Alan Richards, proves just as ruthless as his hated father as he kills an old man by pushing his off the palace balcony. However, since the man he pushed off was indeed his father, the crowds forgive for this and actually cheer
(+1 confidence)
Calador also kills people publicly, but this time after a trial. The governor of the Torpestan province was found guilty of corruption during the purge and was executed in front of a large crowd. Confidence in the king is higher than ever as the people find their lives becoming easier
(+1 confidence)
Ibeian priests are busy travelling around the nation telling everybody, old and young, full-blooded and newly conquered the histories of their past and reminding them all about the story of Isis. Everywhere they travel the story touches home as the audience listens in complete rapture. Reactions are very different. Some feel a newly awakened pride in their nation, some decides to help protect their valuable freedom and help restore the land as Isis herself would have wanted it and others just feel plain happy.
(+1 happiness, +2 loyalty, +3000 infantry)

To: Ibe
From: Senate of Pithal
We, the senate of Pithal has voted to continue the war against you as you must pay for your transgressions against our people. However, we might be willing to discuss peace if you hand the border provinces over to us.

From: Toran Federation
Help! We will pay you tribute if you will send your armies to help us throw out the ruthless aggressors who have attacked us.
To: Calador
From: Mearlkrol
Imperia is beaten, but were not sure it was a good idea to attack ThLek-Zamzerai rather than attempt to bribe them.
Notes
*1 I had to basically rewrite the entire section after having finished everything as I misunderstood your orders. I read them as 3 armies into Pithal and only 1 into Toran
making things much, much different. If it seems a bit jumbled its because of all my edits.
Also, next time Ill be looking at the nation sizes to see if any should be changed as well as have a look at the religions stats as missionaries are starting to get more common.
Finally, due to my new schedule I am permanently changing the deadline. From now on it will be on Thursdays, but at the same time.
