Hurrican Ian

Ian made landfall nearly 2 hours ago and damn. It's slapped Florida super hard. Historically devastating storm. Reports of hundreds trapped on roofs at Naples, I've seen reports of homes being simply lifted off their foundations by the surge. Last night there were dozens of tornadoes in the outer bands, and tornado warnings continue to drop routinely up to now.

I think we're watching one of the many, many consequences of climate change. The amount of energy for hurricanes to feed on is increasing, extremely quickly by geologic standards.

More energy in the system --> more energy for hurricanes to pick up the ocean and dump it onto land.

Yeah, not sure what that will do other than be a pain to remove later if no projectiles hit the windows. I guess if they put it on either side, it would catch some of the glass, but it would still be a complete mess if a branch gets lobbed through all the same.

Rain won't get inside meaningfully if nothing compromises the windows either way. With the storm veering south of initial tracks, it's unlikely winds will be sufficient to move the vehicle there, so it's really just a question of whether an object gets tossed into the window I'd guess.
I thought the window is already broken so the plastic was the only thing keeping out the rain.

160 people don't burn thru most of the resources.

We're responsible for our own consumption.
With their private jets and general lifestyle they burn many times more than the average Joe.

Water is expected to continue to rise through the next several hours.

It's more about constraining the belief that we can afford more infrastructure and investment than we're currently doing. But the odds that the muggles will just destructively spend whatever wealth increases we get is very, very high. So, a pulling down of the wealth needs to be combined with a constructive allocation of a reasonable portion of it.

Just heard that at least 5 tornados have hit ground in parts of Florida.

Not millions of times more.

Thinking, "rich bastards are ruining society & I have no choices" is just pathetic.

People so resigned these days, it's depressing.

Make Margaret Mead proud.

I never said we have no choice. That is your own projection.

Storm was a big nothingburger as far as Tampa Bay was concerned.

Props to those taking risks to clear up in the aftermath.

But further south they are underwater

@1:45 Fatalities are probably in the 100's.

Ft. Meyers really got rocked when the hurricane pushed the ocean into them.

A reporter for WESH in Orlando helped a woman out of her car after she got stuck in ~3ft/1m of water. The woman turned out to be a nurse trying to get to work. Reporters in the video below are his former colleagues in Milwaukee.
Spoiler :

Elsewhere, a reporter in Kissimee notes a catfish swimming down the street beside her.
Spoiler :

A 'gator enjoys the weather, goes exploring. Maybe he'll grab some lunch downtown later.
Spoiler :

A building gets a new skylight.
Spoiler :

A lot of the conditions were in place for coastal flooding from surge...slow moving storm at high category can push a lot of water. Really bad for Cape Coral/Fort Myers :(.
