I have an idea (CFC OT Member of the Year Poll.)

What if we had multiple awards or whatnot and had a rule that the same person can only win 1 award.

If they existed a few years ago Id think my "listerine" thread would win an award just for the hilarity
I still giggle over that occasionally.

Given that one of those reasons was that 'the moderator team has no energy or motivation left to do this', and given that yourself and Birdjaguar and now both moderators, would it be uncalled for to revisit the issue in detail?
I still bring it up occasionally, and the general reaction is still "no." :(

@aimee: That would make no difference what so ever.

It does not address the problem of inherent elitism.
You may as well ask
"What if we award each winner a daffodil"
it would have as much effect

Yes....and also, this is a Civ site, not an Off-Topic site.

I can understand the reluctance with regards to wanting to prevent elitism, but the argument that the OT mods cannot do something specifically in OT for OT because this is a Civ site makes no sense. The logical extension of that argument would be that OT and the rest of the Colosseum, as well as 'Other Games', shouldn't exist at all.

Which is my primary objection.

No. Not the OT mods. More that if we were ever to have some sort of "poster of the year", OT should not be the place to have it on a civilization fan site.

Then why not have a similar activity in each of the forums? I'm sure there are posters in, say, Civ 4 or Civ 3 (for example) who would qualify for a "poster of the year" acknowledgement.

But if it was specifically for 'OT poster of the year', or other more specifically OT related categories, then OT would seem the right place to have it. It makes sense that a 'CFC poster of the year' award wouldn't be in OT, but the suggestion was OT specific.

I simply extended the idea to be inclusive to all of CFC. Of course each forum would hold its own nominations, vote, and award in its own forum. Afterward, a general announcement could be made for everybody to see:

Poster A in Civ 2
Poster Q in Civ 3
Poster X in OT
etc.

Is it needed though? People who live in those fora KNOW who the good posters are.

Is it needed? Of course not. No more than the Academy Awards, the Nobel Peace Prize, the Booker Prize, or any lesser-known public acknowledgments.

Is it appreciated? Yes, it is.

Does it foster good will? Generally, I like to think that a public pat on the back does foster good will.

Would some posters be inclined to improve their behavior in hopes of receiving this sort of recognition? Probably most wouldn't care. But if even one or two people improve, I think that alone makes the exercise worth the effort.

Think of it as "carrot INSTEAD of stick."

I really think you are significantly underestimating the effort required to run such awards, and really over estimating the ability or desire of posters to "improve".

Call me pessimistic, but you will reward those that already do what they do, naturally, and within a month the whole thing will be forgotten.
I can't see why or how anyone would go about "changing their ways" in hope of getting an award in a years time.
Posters are much more fickle than that.
It only takes 30 seconds for them to flame or troll.
The idea there will be an awards thread in a years time isn't going to stop them.
Finally, a whole years "good" behaviour will not be noticed especially since 95% of the forum have no problem behaving in the first place.

Considering that I have already run such awards activities on other forums, I am quite aware of the time and effort required.

Well, that being the case, I marvel that you think it will be worth the effort, and also wonder why you mods complain of such a workload if you feel you could take something like this on as well! :mischief:

Let's get something straight: I don't speak for the other moderators. I speak only for myself when I say I think this is something worth trying.

Ainwood and Knight-Dragon don't speak for me when they say "the moderators" are not in favor of doing this. In this instance, we disagree. However, I'm only one voice, and so far evidently not a very persuasive one. :(

I did not imply you did speak for any other moderators.

Anyway, I have a fair grasp of the moderator politics, and know for one thing, out of all issues, any whiff of potential elitism and it gets stamped down. One extra voice saying "No, it will be all right" even if it says it in light, bolded blue, isn't going to change things at the very top sadly.

I was more or less thinking of it as just-for-fun, not a real serious thing.

Problem is, one person is happy, because they won.. yet many people are grumpy they didn't win, or their choice didn't win.

Elitism creates divisions, not builds unity.

Thunderfall rewards those that post well with the forum we inhabit. Those who do not post as well get infracted.

Of course people feel disappointed when they don't win. That's true of any competitive activity. But mature people (of any age) rise above their disappointment and behave in a sportsmanlike way and say, "Congratulations" and move on.

I speak from experience when I say that it's far more disappointing not to be nominated for something I'm qualified for than it is to not win once I have been nominated.
