As my 8-year old, more-or-less broken, gaffer tape repaired, electric Phillips razor is now nearing the final end of its lifetime, I feel the need to buy a new razor.

I figure an Internet board with lots of males should have some tips and preferences for what razor to choose. :)

I'm initially looking for a new electric razor, but I can be persuaded to go for the manual type as well.

For those who use electric razors: Do you prefer an oscillating electric razor or a rotary one?

I'm assuming that razors are more or less equal quality-wise. Does anyone have experiences/data to contest this?

I added a small poll out of curiosity as well.

I shave face and head and just use three blade disposables. They last for three shaves maybe.

I use an electric razor, but I'm seriously considering switching. I hear Gilette makes pretty good stuff. Don't get disposable ones 'cause they suck.

If having a close shave is something you want, go manual.

I have Mach3'd for years..

A manual razor is the way to go. It gives you a smooth face (after you tear it to pieces.)

I use the Gillette Fusion, but didn't they just come out with a new manual razor, the Fusion ProGlide. Has anyone used that yet?

I used an electric razor for 2 years, but I've mostly given it up. It was one of the more expensive on the market (80 bucks), but it just couldn't give that close of a shave...and if I went 3 days without shaving, using the electric was actually pretty painful.

If you don't want to miss spots, and can afford spending an extra few min on your face, go manual. The Mach3 is pretty good.

Go manual. It takes 1/2 the time to shave with a manual, wet blade than with an electric one. They also give a much closer shave, and you look 10x more manly with a blade than an electric one.

Mach 3 is good, but honestly, any new blade you buy these days is going to be good. You can't really go wrong with a manual. They all have 3 blades these days.

Real men use cut-throats.

Real men have beards of great girth and length. Shaving with any implement is alien to them.

I'm using a manual now. It actually takes less time. Though I made the mistake of buying a cheapo electric (it was a Braun, but still a cheapo). You get what you pay for. This electric I have to go over the same area many times to get all the hair. I got annoyed and went back to manual.

Though my first day back on manual I cut the crap out of myself, and I think I have a little scar on my upper lip now. :(. I kinda forgot how to manually shave. But I'll stick with manual for now, not going to try to find a decent electric.

In general, your required closeness of shave, colour/texture of hair, and sensitivity of skin will determin which type of razor you use.

Electric razors are fast and convenient. If you have dark facial hair, there's no way to avoid a five-o-clock shadow with an electric razor. Foil vs. Rotary is mostly personal preference, some people prefer one or the other based on skin sensitivity.

Safety razors are cheap (although it can take some effort to find a good deal on one - blades and cream are cheap, and you won't have to replace it every couple years when the battery becomes useless), and give a fantastically close shave, but take a bit more time to shave with.

Disposable razors are easy and convenient, but expensive.

I used an electric razor for 2 years, but I've mostly given it up. It was one of the more expensive on the market (80 bucks), but it just couldn't give that close of a shave...and if I went 3 days without shaving, using the electric was actually pretty painful.

Braun and Philips both have $200+ models...

If I've gone more than 3 days or so without shaving, I'll generally use a beard trimmer on minimum length, and than manual shave what's left; if I'm shaving everyday, I use an electric.

Go manual. It takes 1/2 the time to shave with a manual, wet blade than with an electric one.

It takes me about a minute to shave with an electric razor... I'm not really sure how it's possible to do a wet shave in less time than this.

Do you shave every day? I'd imagine the only way it could take a minute to shave with an electric is if you did it every day!
