Electric. Get with the times, people.

I use an electric razor, but I hear that manual ones give you a much cleaner shave. I'm tempted to try it out except that I'm deathly afraid of cutting myself like an idiot.

In my experience, this is true. I think my parents have bought me two different "good" electric razors as gifts on birthdays or Christmas or whatever, but neither of them gives me a clean shave.

After I use an electric, I run my finger against the grain of the hair and I can feel a 5 o'clock stubble already. When I use a manual (one of those with 3-blades, not a disposable), it is smooth.

For some reason, that reminds me of this sharp knife downstairs that's sticking out of the dirty dishes basket. While it's securely down so I shouldn't have to worry, I keep hallucinating a feeling of it against my throat whenever I see it. Like sympathy pains but without anybody to sympathise with.

Anyway, I'll state the obvious: what is that a reference to? :p

Not a reference to anything, AFAIK. Just the first snark that came to mind. :p

Actually, I usually use a disposable razor and shave in the shower. No mirrors. Just by feel. It's nearly a lost art to sharpen a knife to the point where it could be shaved with.

Every CFC thread must degrade into either religion or politics.

IN that vein, the Second Commandment of the Frisbeeterian* religion:

THOU SHALT NOT buy cheap razor blades

A quick review for those who need it:
The only time to shave is the instant you get out of the shower.
Don't just dab the shaving cream on, really scrub it in; gel is good because it makes you do this
Make one stroke and rinse the blade. It's your own hair caught in the razor that eats your face.
Shave with the grain, and don't press down.
Shave every day. A two-day growth is ten times worse to shave.

YMMV♦ but keep this list in mind. It may come in handy later.

*we believe that when you die your soul goes up on the roof and you can't get it down.

Other. I randomly pick that I'll either keep myself clean shaven, in which case I'll shave every day, with a gillette fusion razor thing(they suck but I'm cheap) in the shower with shaving gel. If I grow some kind of design, I'll shave every day the same way but without cutting the spot I'm growing obviously. But most of the time since graduating high school(I was forced to shave then) I've just taken a beard trimmer and buzzed it off leaving a bunch of nice rough stubble all the time, sexy. Or just let the beard grow obviously, shaving my neckline with a razor every so often so I don't look like a bum.

Razor, cream and the ever useful styptic pencil. I've tried electric but can't get a close shave.

I use a manual razor. I do not use shaving cream, gel, foam or any other stuff, just the razor. Of course, I only have to shave once a week coz I barely grow any facial hair.

Well, seeing as I fail at growing facial hair (it only grows on my chin...), I only need to shave about once a week. Hence, electric is more convenient.

You lucky son of a... ;)

Yeah, I'm shaving every day or every other day. I could grow a full beard if I left it alone for a couple weeks. And a freaking neck-beard to go along with it.

For this, I prefer the manual, using the correct method outlined by the Frisbeeterians above.

I personally recommend a good brush and a puck of shaving soap in combination with a single-blade safety razor. Higher initial investment on the materials, but you save money in the long run (double-edged razors are dirt cheap compared to 3-blade Gilette cartridges; a puck of soap lasts months and months) and get just as good a shave so long as you're reasonably careful. Oh, and a styptic pencil for those nicks.
