If hypothetically, North Korea Collapses... What do we do with it?

Here is a question for you,

I think the obvious situation is to give it back to South Korea, but the question is, Would South Korea want it's northern half back?

Would it be beneficial to South Korea to pick up North Korea and pump hundreds of millions of dollars into it to modernize it? How about the people themselves? South Korea would be responsible for feeding another 30M people, as well as educating them etc. Not to mention the sudden flood of immigrants to centers like Seoul and Busan could lead to employment problems.

What gains would South Korea make in the long term of allowing North Korea back? Would these gains outdo the losses? Can North Korea ever meet South Korean standards? Would Korea as a whole ever recover from a unification?

And, if it was your choice, how would you do things?
first of all, there is no South Korea as you mentioned. There is 1 Korea and the southern part of it is occupied.
so these would be correct questions:

when will korean people in south be free?
when will korea get its southern territory back?
will korea be able to modernize the south when they recover southern territories?

What do we do with it? What should america do with it? What should South Korea do with it? What should China do with it?

hows about we let the North Korean people decide what to do with it? South Korea moves in to restore order, while keeping the border in place. Once things are a little orderly, they hold elections like iraq and make some sort of democracy. Then north and sotuh korea can decide if they want to merge.

Edit: 5000 POSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"We" don't really "do" anything with it.

That is for Koreans to decide (both north and south)

Eventually it will be united with the Republic of Korea.

I say let South Korea decide first, and if they don't want it, give it to either China or Russia. And let South Korea decide which one it wants to give it to.

The ROK would never "give" the DPRK to China or Russia.

Pretty much. South Korea wants reunification, but it wants it on a gradual time line. I think that's been the government's official stance.
South Korea wants reunification soon in theory, but never in practice. They're pretty dedicated to keeping them stable for the foreseeable future.
The only scenario I can really see the ROK wanting actual reunification would be if the DPRK made serious economic and political reforms, and the governments on both sides came to a joint agreement.

My Turkish Comrade is correct. The one true government of Korea, that one that didn't collaborate with the Japanese imperialists, the one that has created a workers paradise, the one that the Western world is jealously and hatefully trying to destroy so they spread lies and rumors about it is the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea under the Wise and Just rule of Great Dear Little Leader Kim Jong Il who. I know many who have visited the DPRK through the Korean Friendship Association and all speak of the wondrous workers paradise. Do not listen to these capitalist imperialist lies. The DPRK is the most prosperous, powerful region of the world today thanks to its Noble principles of Juche as illustrated by Great Leader Kim Il Sung.

We? Not we, South Korea.

A food crisis could be averted by sending them the dogs we usually would have executed in kennels. Before anyone says something about that plan... I say why not? We're going to kill them anyway.

This foremost:

When/if North Korea collapses it won't be up to "us" to decide what to do with it.

Reunification would obviously be a long and arduous process. If the South avoided the German mistakes, it should be manageable.

What mistakes would those be? Also, separation is obviously an arduous process.

Let's let South Korea decide what happens.

I think, in the hypothetical case we're talking about, the North Koreans should finally have a say in Korea's future.

Yepp, a South-Korean delegation came to visit Germany one or two years ago hoping to learn from our mistakes.
Though the GDR was back then in much better shape despite it collapse than North Korea is today. So it will be tough nevertheless.

Agreed. (Again, what were those mistakes?)

If there's one Korea occupied, it's the North one.

I'd say it's quite common for a country to be occupied by its own inhabitants.

 Thank you, most valued comrade.

And that about sums it up. ;)

Well it depends... How does North Korea collapse? From what I know, the some 3 million Citizens in and around Pyongyang are really really loving Kim. Even if the entire country revolts like Berlin Wall 1989, you need to pry it from the cold dead hands of the people of Pyongyang who I am sure will form militias or something against any power trying to pull Kim from power.
And even if you do crush Pyongyang, there is no way you can expect cooperation from civil levels to rebellious levels from the political center of North Korea early on without going against the UN Charter.

East Berlin joined Germany willingly. Pyongyang will fight to its death.

How do we know how much they love Kim/the Regime? From the official DPRK propaganda?

C'mon. I admit DPRK is a rather extreme case, but there were similar prejudices in the West during the Cold War (that the Easterners were in fact happy and satisfied and that they believed in the regime's ideology. In reality, in was an absolute farce in most of the 'socialist' countries).

The most major one: The GDR-industry, which was out-dated but nevertheless of some value, had been sold for ridiculous low prices to Western companies which basically just smashed them to get rid of potential competition. Another one is that many former GDR-companys suddenly found themselves with massive debts being thrown out of a system of no own capital into a system of own capital being essential.
In general the reunification had been rushed for political reasons whereas a slow transition of East-Germany to capitalist standards had allowed the former Communist economy to adopt and to take less harm in the whole process.

Or to roughly quote the East-German politician Wolfgang Thierse: "We had dozens of books describing the transformation of a market economy to a planned economy. We had none for the way back."

Pyongyang is the showcase city of North Korea. It's purpose is to look pretty and amazing like the Beijing Olympics for the foreigners to be awed in. As a result, it is the best city in North Korea to live in, it gets the best food from the famine-struck country, best "job" opportunities, best housing. Little Kim stocks the city with his most loyal supporters so that
1) They stay loyal
2) It fits into the whole "North Korea is so awesome" look when thousands of citizens turn up for government events in front of foreign delegates.
In reality, living in North Korea is like living in Hong Kong 1970s. Cept with a whole lot more power shortages.

Look at this video clip of "A Day in North Korea". You see how the teacher is WILLINGING (albeit brainwashed) engaging in brainwashing a whole new generation of North Koreans (who are dressed quite well) in Kimmy's awesome returned boots.

This isn't an isolated case. You go find clips about British filmmakers that go to North Korea, you see that they all really really think America is the anti-christ (When a blackout occurred an old man shouted "Damn Americans") and they love Kim to the death. Out of actual (brainwashed) love.

Taking Pyongyang will not be easy. East Berlin led the charge to drop communism like a dead duck. Pyongyang will definitely require a whole lot more effort to convince these people. Also take note that half of all North Koreans are/were in the army.

Assuming that North Korea (save Pyongyang) revolts, you will essentially have a civil war between Pyongyang and the rest of North Korea.

Then Ill assume the UN steps in and calls for a ceasefire and occupies North Korea.

Then there will be democratic elections for reunification with South Korea which will succeed everywhere by Pyongyang.

Then South Korea will do unspeakable horrors to the citizens of Pyongyang to keep them in life.

Funny, people here jokingly scream "VIVA CHAVEZ" whenever we have a blackout.

Out of topic... But can you change back your avatar... its very creepy... You... and Teekee... Is it still April Fool's day in Venezuela?

The North Korean people are growing more dissatisfied with their imperious leaders' incompetence. The recent botched currency redenomination didn't help matters. Public anger got to the point that mobs openly attacked government inspectors and criticised the regime. There are tons of articles on Chosun Ilbo and DailyNK about the current state of things.
