If newbies start with zero in the Global Ranking, so you disagree (should you care)?

I have been wondering whether we expect too much of Matrix and his spreadsheet skills.

That is a good and considerate point. I had taken it for granted that Matrix was an accomplished spreadsheet maker, based on the excellent spreadsheet incarnations he's made available for download. Since I've done much more complex spreadsheets that even what we've hypothetically discussed in this forum (in engineering and gov't work), I'd volunteer to help in whatever way Matrix felt would be useful, if he needed it. Probably there are others who would offer assistance to Matrix with spreadsheets, etc. Once it is all down to a system, however, the main drain on time is likely to be just physically opening and examining and inputting the GOTM entrees.

thanks to starlifter for expanding my Excel knowledge.

Thanks for giving me credit, but it sounds like the credit really belongs to you, since you researched it

. But maybe noughmaster and I nudged you into it with all our equations and discussions

Looks like all of our discussion didn't bear much fruit.
Matrix:
What exactly is wrong with averaging the best 4 of last 6?
Why do you think the current GR method is preferable?
I'd really like to know, because a few of us put quite a bit of effort into some sensible and informative discussions.

Just like to point out that I agree with the 3 of 5 / 4 of 6 method, even though my opinion might not matter.

About it being too complicated on the spreadsheets, I have a solution to that..
Just put up a private web page that lets you simply type in the player's civ score and it'll pop out all the necessary HOF and GR results. It would be relatively easy to program with perl/php/coldfusion/asp/whatever with MySQL/mSQL/PostgreSQL/whatever.. heck, I'd even do it for you. It would be easy to use because it would be pre-programmed to use the correct formulae, and only two inputs would be needed: one to type in names for submitters and one to type in their scores.

They say that when all you have is a hammer, everyhing looks like a nail. Maybe that's what's going on in my head with this suggestion, but I think it would work.

Everybody who participates in this site's opinion matters. An informed opinion is better than an uninformed one, but I don't think it's too hard for people to understand the gist of the arguments on this topic.

This is a key point about a forum / exchange of ideas site like this one: a lot of people with a variety of skills are willing to help with the site.
If only Matrix would make use of them ...

I have read all of the posts on this subject, and the 3 of 5 / 4 of 6 method definitely seems to be the best out of the multitude of suggestions presented by CFers and the system currently in place. Matrix has addressed almost all of the suggestions, but he has never really told us what he thinks about the 3 of 5 suggestion. I'd like to see him do that. I want to see him state his opinion on the matter.

Maybe he didn't read all of the posts and thus didn't quite understand the concept.. that seems almost probable, but the suggestion has been repeated So Many Times (ad infinitum, almost) that I find that hard to believe. The concept is incredibly simple and beautiful, Matrix, if you're reading this, and I don't understand your reluctance to respond to it. Here's a one-sentence summary for you so you don't have to read any "boring" math-ish posts:

Take the average of the best three out of the last five GOTM games played.
Tada.

You seem like a very nice and very intelligent person. I hope you reply.

Here's the reason: I've been very very busy lately. My girlfriend waa just back from holiday and my computer...is still screwed up. It is simple and understandable; however it does make the speadsheet more complicated. But it's doable for me. Hopefully my computer will be back on the track before the next GOTM finishes. I'll use that system or tell you why I still haven't used it.

And I must say - I have said this before and also PMed starlifter about it - you seem to be so much on the forum and especially starlifter and noughmaster have posted so extremely much that I sometimes just have to scan or even skip part of posts or entire posts. I mean, some days there isn't a single thing posted and the next day sl&nm posted 20 things, regarding the scoring system ofcourse.

Not having a lot of time and the amount of posting combined made me not to respond at all.

I think it is a little unfair that cactus pete wins by conquest in 800 a.d or so and then gets a kack score...(BIGGER BONUSES FOR QUICK dispatch please).

Matrix - okay, thanks for explaining...

But, I'll be gone from here on August 23, so if you want me to make that webpage you should let me know now...

Yes it looks very odd for Cactus Pete to play so well and not have a much higher score.
