Mental illness and bouts of depression aside.

If someone is a genius but can't successfully maintain a positive emotional state at least some of the time would you still consider them smart?

Yes, they are still smart. Smart people if unhappy, I suspect they can see things at a higher level then us 'normal' folk. ie they can see something bad that we cant and it makes them unhappy.

Note if I dont make any sense I'm probably crazy.

Well since genius seems to come with the territory of unhappiness and insanity it's a tricky question, if they could overcome the inherent instability then yes they are wise, but that does not necessarily make them any more clever. So many great people have merely learnt to deal with the flaws that intelligence brings, and so many great people have been lost to those inherent flaws. All I hope is that the Nashe's and the Van Goghs are encouraged enough to make there brief candle burn so much more brightly and not discouraged by the society they live in. Genius is creativity unbound with all the problems that brings.

WHat does one have to do with the other...?

Many literary geniuses were consumed with extreme depression, so I say the two conditions can coexist.

Often unhappy people have a more accurate worldview than happy people.

Most happy people consider themselves to have above average intelligence. How can that be true? By comparison, depressed people are more likely to be able to accurately place their intelligence on the scale.

Depressed people are less likely to gamble, because they understand that they're unlikely to win. (*Please note that chronic gamblers are more likely to be depressed, but it's not the same thing).

Tell me ... who's more intelligent, then?

Of course!

Havent you ever heard of vincent van gogh or albert einstein?

Of course! Intelligence and mood are completely unrelated. You may be in a foul mood because your girlfriend dumped you, or because you were insulted at work, but you can still be smart.

Well, one could argue that everyone's goal in life is to be happy (I've never seen this successfully refuted). And what is intelligence worth if it is not useful in accomplishing one's goals?

Of course their still smart. Some of the most brilliant artists and scientists in human history suffered from depression. It's a mental disease like any other; holding it doesn't make you stupid.

Of course.
