It's the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The thing in my avatar didn't happen until the second day, but I figured more people would recognize Col. Joshua "Don't Call Me Lawrence" Chamberlain than Brig. Gen. John Buford.

Mounted crossbowmen were used historically, and given their low rate of, forgive me, fire, it's unlikely they shot for suppression. So they'd have to shoot to hit something, and crossbows are rather accurate. Of course, shooting from a moving horse would take practice, but this was easier than shooting a bow from horseback, and plenty of peoples did just that.

A low rate of fire makes it even worse. Do you think they could aim well while on a moving horse?

I can't get the links to work. But crossbows are easier to aim than bows, and many peoples were accurate with bows from moving horses. Mounted crossbowmen were used by the French, Spanish, and others in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Further, and perhaps most importantly, you didn't have to hit an individual, just a formation.
