Indians make 100 hostages in Brazil

Having just watched 500 Nations I support our glorious leader's jurisdiction ;). The movie was a very well done & emotionally compelling piece on the native cultures of North America (and their interactions with European & Americans from 1492 to the early 1900s). It didn't focus on South America at all & my knowledge of the ins & outs of the past & present situation with the Natives there is near nil.

Without any knowledge of the ins & outs whatsoever however I can still point out that Luiz's comment that a small population of Natives "owns" 13% of the land is probably misleading. A rich businessman who owns a quarter-acre penthouse is not worse off than a tribe somewhere who "owns" 1000 acres of hunting/farming ground that's probably been devastated by logging & commercial hunting (again I'm just shooting off the hip here, so the specifics could be off but statistics out of context mean nothing).

great analysis!

What angers me the most is how now they claim they are outraged because of this supposed cemetery, and are even threatning to destroy the whole thing. But they dont want the dam stopped, they just want millions of dollars in compensation. Bastards.

One question:

Did the Indians or didn't the Indians give prior consent to the building of the dams, like the Brazilian Constitution prescribes?

If so, did they all have collective amnesia about this cemetery?

This sort of argument is ridiculous. The fact that their ancestors were here first mean nothing.

In fact, recently in Roraima they kicked out small farmers whose families had been living in the land for 200 years to make room for yet another indian reservation.

This sort of argument is ridiculous. The fact that their ancestors were here first mean nothing.

Your anger leads to ridiculous argument.

Luiz, you're a vehement anti-collectivist; isn't screwing other people over so you can make a quick buck part and parcel of your philosophy? If anything, you should applaud their ingenuity in exploiting the gullibility of non-indigenous Brazilians. It shows that they're finally starting to learn something from the colonials. :p

Well I applaud the ingenuity of the chief who came with this scheme in the same manner that I applaud the ingenuity of Al Capone or whatever succesful criminal. I still think they belog in jail, though. ;)
