INES I: Anno Domini

A note on update schedule-

On the first page it says that orders will be due each and every Friday, 20:00 GMT, but the real deadlines, so far, have both been Wednesday, 20:00 GMT.

Why?

Because I started the NES earlier than I anticipated, in the middle of the week, so the update schedule got skewed. The third update's deadline will be friday, giving you a week and a half for orders, and setting the updates up in a pattern that better fits my RL.

Not sure if any of you noticed the discrepency, but there's the reason, if you did.

btw, 4/11 orders in. Where's MjM? He said he'd join, and I need more players, to focus action away from the Levant.

To Israel, Cush
From Axum

We wish to bring peace to the Middle East and Africas. Will you sign a 60 year NAP with us?

To Nan
From Chu

Alrighty, Southern Pact sounds superb.

To Liang
From Chu

That NAP is acceptable, thankyou.

I'd preffer to remain ominously silent, especially as my present king doesn't care about the going-ons in the greater world all that much. Then again, he doesn't have the real power in the country neither...

However, I suppose that you might as well help if I do decide to involve myself there, why not?

In fact:

IC:

From: Israel
To: The Byzantine Empire

We propose an official alliance.

To Greece
From Axum

We gladly accept your NAP as well as the Trade Agreement.

To: Greece
From: Epirus

We would most certainly accept a NAP and trade agreement, as well as an MMP. With your help, we will be able to maintain our independence from warlike Byzantium, and so, we applaud your actions.

To: Greece
From: Minoan Cyprus

NAP and trade agreement accepted.

Imago: do trade agreements actually affect stats? Or do they just calibrate a level of friendliness between two nations.

Trade agreements can have a (minimal) effect on the rise and fall of trade centers. Due to my economy system, economic warfare is a real possibility, if tricky to pull off.

To: Greece
From: Epirus

We will not let your troops wander throughout our country. You can defend us, but we do not see the need for your troops on our soil. We must be prepared, if you betray us.

FROM: Byzantine Empire
TO: Kingdom of Israel

We accept your offer.

FROM: Byzantine Empire
TO: Greece

We want you to realize that you signed an agreement with us prior to your agreement with Epirus. If you break that alliance and go to war with us, things will go poorly for you.

((OOC: Road tripping back to university, more diplo in 3ish hours.))

Don't worry. We won't go to war with you. (Unless you attack Epirus)
Also, MPP/NAP/Trade?

We wish to enact a free trade agreement between our two people, and the establishment of a Hellenic alliance against any threats to our existence. Will you accept?

Of course!

Hellenic Alliance - Byzantium, Greece [Proposed the second page, accepted the third page]

...

We already have MPP/NAP ;)

Yom Kippur goes from Sundown to Sundown on the 10th of Tishrei, the 1st/7th month of the Hebrew Calendar. It it the day of repentance. On Yom Kippur, everyone fasts and attends 6 prayer services, being the usual 3 + musaf + a special for yom kippur + kol nidre.

In the city of Adulis, in the nation of Axum, people begin to walk to theor communal houses of prayer. They hear Kol Nidre, and throw the bread crumbs into the water. They head home, through the deserted market. That is ALMOST deserted market. A young man is in a stall, selling pork on a fast day. He was arrested by a policeman on duty.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the jail

"You are under arrest for 3 counts of heathenism. You will remain silent, because everything you say will be used against you in the court, and you shall not think any malicious thoughts as they will be used against you in the hereafter."

"But I cannot be arrested by you for breaking a fast day, as you are doing a job by arresting me!"

"Wrong. Pikuach Nefesh! You may do anything to save a life. I am saving people from a life of sin."

"That is not how the sanhedrin meant it!"

"Someone selling bacon on Yom Kippur should not be arguing with me about Judaism. You are piling on the guilt. Now you are to go before the courts with FOUR charges: Doing business on a fast day, selling food on a fast day, selling unkosher foods, and using judaism to serve oneself but not Hashem."

At that point the prisoner was quiet, and said not a word in court, until he said one last sentence at his stoning.

"L'dor v'dor ish ikoom sheRotze laHarog haYehudim!"

(in every generation a man will rise who wants to kill all the jews.)

OOC: Nowadays we use the phrase "L'dor v'dor ish kayam sheRotze laHarog otanu" Pretty much the same, though kayam rather than ikoom means rose rather than will rise, and otanu means us instead of all the jews.

EDIT OOC:
True translation with slightly altered hebrew. In each and every generation they rise up against us to destroy us. And The Holy One, blessed be He, rescues us from their hands.

j_eps is making you people all look bad! Make me some stories!

And...

4/10 Orders. I sent a PM to JosefStalinator when he was online, asking if he was still in this, and he never responded. Consider Lusitania NPC.

First NES I joined (have joined 2 since), and I'm not great right now, need to make up for it in stories. I was writing one for my other NES and all of a sudden started talking about Axum and Aksumites and Judaism, instead of Austria, Armenians, and War with Turkey.

Emperor Xiao gazed out of the former palace of the Wu emperors and sighed. It was a difficult responsibility, running an empire that controlled nearly half of one of the greatest civilisations of all time. But then, it was more difficult running that empire and ensuring the smooth running of one of a complex policy-making machine involving three other nations, and manage two major ethnic groups within his own empire. He turned to his advisors and said only one word, "Begin."

The eyes and ears of the Emperor explained quickly, informing the Emperor that his divine mandate to rule was being undermined by Wu spies, in the form of merchants across the Empire. A long, empty silence followed as Emperor Xiao considered his options. When finally he spoke, it was in a surprised whisper. "We have done nothing to harm the Wu who live in the East of our nation, why would they turn against us?"
"Why, your Majesty," the Chief Advisor sounded surprised as he explained, "there is no reason why they should not betray your trust and faith. They are cut from the same cloth as the Wu who fled to Taiwan, and are not to be trusted."

Xiao was not an unreasonable man, he sought to unite China through peaceful negotiation, not bloody war. But if the Wu were seeking to prevent that, if they were attempting to sabotage his palace, and interfere with the communications vital to the success of the unprecented experiment that was the Council of China. He had never sought to antagonise his Wu subjects, so perhaps what they needed was a show of force..."Deport them. Every last Wu merchant is to be sent off Chu soil. If any resist, bring them to Ying."
"Of course, sire." The advisors left, and Xiao was left alone, in a former Wu palace, in the former Wu capital, watching former Wu subjects. Maybe they didn't seek to destabilise his rule at all, maybe his advisors were simply trying to trick him...If his advisors were lying to him, Xiao would be unable to make the right decisions. Would these trusted allies really try to drive him into a war that was unnecessary? Xiao looked into the palace courtyard and saw the fanatical Chu Imperial Guards, suggested by his advisors, drilling.

"I have a bad feeling about this."

OOC: Woot! Story! I think that's only like...the third story I've ever written...ah, this could lead to some rather pointed restructuring of my Empire. Who knows, maybe Xiao will be deposed, and I'll run a military state? Or perhaps Xiao will have his advisors slaughtered, and cater to the whims of the other Chinese through the Council? Tune in next time to find out!

48 hour warning for the deadline. I only mention this because, coupled with a lack of eastern med diplo, I have orders from not a single eastern med country.

Also, when the deadline comes, don't expect the update up as promptly as it was the last time. I did not get a head start this time around. However, I'm 95% sure the update will be up by the end of Saturday.
