Spoiler :
Do not talk about the ones on this site, they pay for it and they are fine.

The ones I mean are the ones on other sites that start to play a video without my consent, it may just be me but this feels like an invasion of my home somehow, and that there should be a law (or something) against it.

What adverts annoy you? Do you know of this law that I want?

Edit: and yes I do know I can turn my sound off, but I shouldn't have to.

Playing sound on a site without permission is a big no no.

I agree. It's really annoying, and also if you have left your volume up, and are in a public setting, that can be also potentially embarrassing.

I don't like the adverts that take what you've been google searching and apply it to you. Too much of a privacy invasion for me.

Sound w/o permission is an instant tab close. Video w/o audio still bugs me, as some folks pay through the nose when cross a bit cap. I use adblock (CFC whitelisted of course, since i like this place and the ads are non-intrusive), so i never have to deal with these ads anymore.

I had it when the ad pops up and covers the whole screen. (Like on Yahoo for example) Which is why I use Gmail.

Flashing banner ads, more often than not, trigger migraines in me. I'd hate to think of people who have photosensitive epilepsy coming across one. (I've actually witnessed a grand mal seizure. Scary as hell.)

I personally use AdBlock Plus although if I like a site and they have the non-annoying ads (e.g. the Google AdSense ones, which can sometimes be funny) I'll whitelist them.

I hate it when they play sound. I play music a lot and then someone starts talking or funny noises happen and I wonder just what the neighbors are up to.

I will not tolerate audio/video ads. That's part of the reason I switched to using adblock, though like others I whitelist certain sites. If I am online, there's a good chance I'm listening to YouTube videos, and I don't want to hear "CONGRATULATIONS YOU JUST WON A FREE IPHONE" in the middle of that. I try to avoid websites that feature ads like ZeletDude mentioned: right now the only place I know worth enduring those is Cracked.com's persistent urges that I "like" them.

I, too, will stop visiting a site or adblock it if it has invasive audio, particularly lyrics websites. The webmasters should know better, honestly... If I'm looking up lyrics for a song, chances are I'm listening to it at that moment. If some stupid advertisement starts blaring crap at me I will immediately exit. I'm trying to enjoy my music, what makes you think I'll listen to your crappy sales pitch?!

Playing sound on a site without permission is a big no no. If any site does this, I stop visiting.

It amazes me that it still happens. And I agree, if my adblock doesn't prevent it, that site's getting never visited ever again.

I miss my firefox stop autoplay. :(

invasive adverts are not helping improve online user experience as far as i'm concerned. the extra motion and clicks to close pop-ups not to mention the time and bandwidth lost to unskippable 30sec ads are not my idea of fun. opera and chrome blocks most ads but the ones that get past the filter are usually those ads that have an uncanny ability to know when to scream at your face at the most inopportune times; like when you're trying to beat a deadline or something.

Annoying, but not the worse problem. The primary offender with talking ads for me is Cracked, and I'm perfectly willing to endure 50 second of some bimbo prattling on about clorox bleach in exchange for not having to pay for the site.

You can still get it here:

It's also on Softpedia (which is one of the sites that's unblocked as I've never seen a flashing ad there). Not sure why it was removed from the Firefox site.

The main thing is that these invasive ads annoy people more than make them want to buy the product. So why do they use them?

I'll join the "I hate ads that contain sound" crowd, especially if I can't mute or pause specifically the ad, and have to mute everything.

Turn on pop up blockers, use an anti-adware program like Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and maybe turn on a website advisory too (I think McAffe does that)?

I feel trojans, etc... should be outlawed, and it should both be legal for: the Fed to block their access to the internet in the USA, and to sue such providers if they distribute from servers within the USA.

The Fed? Surely you mean the FCC.
