IOT Developmental Thread

Suddenly reminds me of DYOS (which tbh I think would be more awesome if everyone kept it to adventuring individuals).

1936? But, I thought you wanted to leave a possibility to not have WW2... :(
Hitler's election and the attempted coup of Austria are the only WWII-leading events that are not covered in '36. The re-occupation of the Rhine hasn't happened yet(not to mention even the Anschluss of Ausrtria), the invasion of Ethiopia hasn't happened yet(Nor the annexation of Albania), and the invasion of Cina hasn't happenend yet (Although I believe Japan has got manchuko by now I don't recall for sure)

There's a lot of different things that could happen to prevent or drastically alter WWII.

Ironically, just about every DYOS has ended in gratuitous space battles.

I see the fate of DYOSes and IOTs run somehow parallel. I wonder if there are any connections... *stares at Thorvald, TK and CivGeneral*

If I join as Yugoslavia (The Kingdom), how easily can I change to a Titoist Yugoslavia, or can I join as the Ustasha (Croat nationalists) and wait for someone to give me a hand in liberating Greater Croatia.

In fact, Classic IOTs operate on a very different sets of assumptions from the later IOTs which most of you are know. It's all about Cooperation Not Competition. The earliest IOTs weren't games (implying competition) as much as collaborative storytelling. They originally started as egoistic mapmaking exercises where people would takeover a region of the world and then mostly play with and within their own countries; interaction with other players were limited consisting mostly of diplomatic treaties and trade and joint actions involving international criminals, terrorists, economic crises, emergency disaster aid, environmental concerns, etc. Any international disputes were to be settled by diplomacy, in the United Nations thread. The unspoken rule was that war was to be avoided, and countries don't need to prove themselves to be better than the others; this is why people who came in bragging about a 10 million men army were frowned upon.

Indeed.

I started quantifying stats not to try and make games infinitely complex, but to give players some more stuff to work with. Most folks will find it hard to gauge economics or militaries and the like, hence the idea behind actually quantifying such. You can't claim to be the economic superpower unless your GDP far surpasses everyone else's.

The tragedy I suppose is it inevitably lends itself to competition since players will need a method to improve their standing, which will ultimately lead to many trying to outgun eachother.

Though I bring it up again: if it was based on storytelling why not merge with NES? :p

I thought it was NES that was based on stats? :p

A story noted IOT would be intresting. To push forwards one must keep in links with the classics.

In relative notes we need more fantasy based IOTs. Since Terios is set for after MP3 and that is very stable it appears it will be some time unless someone decides to make a fantasy IOT. Alas I for one have not made a IOT yet.

Uhh, no. I've never joined a <purely> RP-based IOT. From what I can tell, IOT is much more mechanically inclined compared to many NES's
I believe this has been established for a while.

I digress, the two still aren't all that different.

Its not funny when you explain the joke.

You could join the communist party in Yugoslavia and try to coup the kingdom. Joining as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and trying to go commie will be very difficult because the government would be only center-left.

You can't really join as nationalist movements to secede... The system put in place currently allows you only to play as political parties(which is the only way their stats make sense), and I don't think Croat nationalist were very partisan.

It's not funny when the joke isn't funny.

I don't know how you can make that connect—oh right Coruscant.

SO YOU KILLED IT!! I KNEW IT!!

Your IOT seems interesting. I may join as Japan and take over China and then India.

Weren't you in that Middle East IOT I GMed for half a month?

I didn't really do anything, though.

lurker's comment: To drop my 2 cents, I've recently noticed many story-inclined IOTers slowly shift into the NESing forum, while more "fringe" NESers shift into IOT.

Honestly, IMHO there is no major difference, at least not one major enough to justify two sub communities. People can still choose to participate in only what they like if we merge, but a merge would give greater opportunity to grow and develop together.

Heck, I even have an absurdist project called "Sillynes" in my to-do list.

<Insert obligatory comment about me not wanting post count but also explaining that I resolved to give up that fight because everyone else disagrees with me here>

I don't see any reason why post count can possibly be bad. There's hardly anything good but at least there's something.

That said, I wouldn't mind merging.
