IOT: Land Ho!

Interesting.

Who wants to see an Islamic Austria?

We already have an Islamic Russia.

Besides, who says they have to be Islamic or Austria?

And we need a central European more than we need a middle-eastern or Iceland.

Restarting as Austria

The Austrian Empire

300px-Flag_of_the_Habsburg_Monarchy.svg.png

History:
The eccentric Austrian Archduke Maximillian II came to the throne as a teenager near the end of the 14th century. He was among one of the most skilled administator and military leader of his day, and one of the most controversial. He took an (some might say) unhealthy interest in new inventions and ideas, and mixed himself with other eccentric individuals; court favourites included an astronomer who thought the Earth revolves around the Sun, a Venetian Jew who founded Austria's first banks, and a travelling Sufi from Damascus. The common people and the merchants loved him, and the nobles hated him, for he challenged the power of the nobles. His neighbours hated him too, for he was bent on territorial expansion.

He had a stormy relationship with the Pope in Rome. When the Pope finally excommunicated the wayward Archduke for ignoring the Papal instruction not to divorce his wife, the Austrian leader took an unconventional solution: after consulting with the Muslims at his court, he converted to Islam. Getting his people to accept this change was not easy; but eventually he converted most of the country, through a combination of financial incentives, persuasion, and death threats. The Christian states did not look kindly on this new Sultanate in the heart of Europe, but neither did many of the Islamic states, for many considered the Austrian syncretic grand of Islam heretical.

Maximillian II was succeeded by his son and grandsons, who continued to consolidate the Sultanate and promote Islam in the country. The current ruler, Sultan Alphonse I (his mother was French), now wants to expand Austria's territory. His vassals, however, are becoming difficult to control.

Capital: Vienna
Type of Government: semi-feudal monarchy
Economic system: dominated by guilds, state monopoly of some strategic goods
Religion: Syncretic Islam
One Strength: innovative
One Flaw: infighting

It seems you edited the map. Thanks because i had no time to make new claims.

Thanks to Tambien for the better map.

Cristos- Yes, I did do that.

Iceland- Er, I probably should have a no new countries rule. Do you mind moving out of Arabia because that screwed up my plans a little?

EDIT: Mind if I just give you some Scandinavian and Mediterranean island land instead?

BY IMPERIAL DECREE

At this point- no new players

Omega124- Change your weakness and religion so we can start

Why doesn't Iceland have better quality claims????? PLus, I think you just messed up some of Link's plans for NPCs.... :D

Yes.

For now I'll just give them a good chunk of Scandinavia, maybe some Northern Europe, and some Mediterranean islands.

That ok, Iceland?

This took ages so you better enjoy it K? Sorry about some of the spellings ^-^

Made some rules changes, recopied here for your benefit:

Spoiler :
Rebellion! And other random events

Various random events can happen to your country depending on the state of world affairs, your roleplays, and other people's roleplays.

Of particular interest is the rebellion. Any province not controlled by you at the beginning of turn 1 has the potential to rebel. There is a base 5% chance per turn of rebellion, but that is modified by other factors. The chances of rebellion are decreased by:

  • Keeping territories close to and connected to your capital (if it's more than 20 territories away or across the ocean, +10 percentage points)
  • Building infrastructure (Each infra decreased probability by 1 percentage point)
  • Having a strong army (Each army, navy decreases probability by .5 percentage points)
  • Winning wars (Each capital controlled other than your own decreases the probability by five percentage points)
  • Being at peace (Each war increases it by 5 percentage points)
  • Having certain powers or not having certain weaknesses.
  • Wrting good roleplays (depends on quality)

When a territory rebels, an NPC forms and takes it over, but the person from whom it rebels has that one opportunity to swtich to that new nation. I will also role to see if neighboring provinces join the rebelling province, with a base chance of 20%, modified by the factors above.

NPC Actions

There are various actions you can perform with NPC's:

Form Protectorate-You control the country's diplomacy and movement of armies and navies. half of its EP's are transferred to you per turn. Costs two EP per territory controlled by the NPC.

Annex- The NPC is absorbed into your nation. Costs four EP per territory controlled by the NPC.

Lastly, you can perform all actions you could with any regular player.

Tambien, your new map is not the best quality as well- it still won't fill in the edges :(

Ok, no promises, but I'll probably update tonight. Mosher and Omega still haven't made the changes I've asked but we'll start without them if they don't make the changes by the time I update.

OOC: Linkman, can we still post RP claims, or is the update too far along for you to make any changes?

Edit: Oh, Okay then. Never mind.

OCC: Today ended up being way more hectic at work than I anticipated... so no starting RP from me. :(

Basic outline was going to be around my extensive trade networks with the interior of the continent, how I am looking for trade agreements with others and a little bit about my expansion desires on the continent, but it looks like that will have to wait until after the update.

I'll post an embassy here in the group in a minute...

Kinich- Sure but please not too much. In your case it might not even be worth it as you're nearly maxed out as to how many territories you can get

BSmith- Alright. I'll give you more land than I would for most people who posted nothing because at least you let me know that you couldn't just yet. That said I expect to see it up after the update. Also you have a fairly strong power so that should compensate

No worries!

(OCC: I found a few minutes!)

Mansa Mahmud III had just gotten back from the meeting with the outsiders. He felt that the meeting had gone well, as the albinos had agreed to buy copper and gold from the empire. In return they had offered to provide the empire with weapons made of a strong, yet light material. They called it steel. These weapons would be of great benefit to the emperors’ continued expansion of the empire into new and dangerous lands.

They had also asked about the possibility of buying any prisoners that the empire held from its many small border conflicts with the tribes of the interior. As these prisoners were still of use to the emperor, he did not agree to sell them, but the offer was quite intriguing. No, these prisoners were capable of good hard labor, and were also a lucrative source of ransom payments from their home tribes.

The frequency with which the albinos were appearing on the coast seemed to be increasing. Only ten to twenty years ago, it was an event that almost never happened. These days it seemed that every couple of months a ship would appear in search of fresh water and other food for re-supply. It was only recently that ships started arriving expressly for the purposes of trading with the empire.

Among other things, the empire had copper, gold and salt in large quantities that they could trade with these outsiders. The empire also had extensive networks with the interior. Tribes from dark and unexplored regions of the continent frequently brought such things as ivory and rhinoceros horns into the empire in exchange for salt.

The Emperor was pleased that the albino outsiders were interested not only in the gold and copper that he had to offer, but also these more exotic treasures. He sensed that he could increase the wealth and standing of the empire by selling these things to the foreigners.
