As an introduction, I want to do a quick-play of this year. Essentially this turn is all role play so I can craft events that are meaningful to you lot next turn and to set the settings of potentially alternate countries. I ask that everyone participate in this in some way to make the real first turn as interesting and relevant to your interests as possible. Collaborate, plan, do diplomacy, anything. Here's some ideas of what you can talk about. All events outlined here are to occur as this turn's "events," however this does not mean they played out like they did in OTL. Essentially, all these events are assumed to have started to some extent, but the outcomes or manner of execution can be changed by you, the player. For example, the American election is assumed to have started, but who will win and under what political climate it will be in are up for determination.

So play away!

Stats for a detailed depiction of the power balance will hopefully be done by tomorrow. For now, here's a list of greatest to weakest for the Great Powers to the last of the Secondary Powers. Civilized and Uncivilized should pretty much know their place.

And who is to say that these United States is a light of liberty in this world? For every freedman you see in the Southern states of this Union, you are likely to see one or more man in chains – shackled, tormented, and inhumanely worked as if not a man but beast, for the sake of cotton, tobacco, and other such luxuries! To the planters in the South, to the clayeaters in the South, and to the simple yeomen in the South, the Negro race is not human! It is something less, something to be treated, branded, sold. It disgusts me to the very fiber of my being that one man could brand another, that a man could take a creature capable of rational thought, and worship the same God as he, in the same manner as he, and still tie him to irons for the rest of his life, and his son's life, and his grandson's life, and so forth.

So it is thus my call to the peoples of the more civilized Northeast, where which slavery has been forbidden on our grounds for many years, to join us in our holy crusade, to join us blessed warriors in the American Anti-Slavery Society, and fight against the evils of slavery, to do what must be done in order to end that foul and strange institution, of which most of the civilized world has already abolished. It is our sacred duty, as good and faithful Christians, to fight our righteous fight to its full extent; to fulfill our God-given duty.

To further our cause, as auxilliary organizations of the Anti-Slavery Society, the Young Men's Anti-Slavery Troop and the Young Women's Anti-Slavery Society have been created, right here in Boston. The YMAST will focus on promoting moral, Christian values on young boys who signup, teaching them practical skills and self reliance, while educating them on the evils of slavery and how they can support the fight against it. The YWASS will focus on educating young women on proper skills needed to maintain and run a household, provide for their husbands, and be educated on what they can do in the fight against slavery.

Slavery will only exist in our nation as long as we tolerate it. To destroy evil, we must fight it; with words or weapons, whichever necessary. I wish to see a Union in which all men can live free of being owned, and live free of the tyranny of their overlords, the looming threat of being sold down the river from their wife and children. It is the duty of every God-fearing American to fight the righteous fight, to purge the evil from the moral fabric of our nation, to lead it into a brave new future!

In the 1830s and the 1840s, descendants of Dutch and other settlers, collectively known as Boers (farmers) or Voortrekkers (pioneers), left the British Cape Colony, in what was to be called the Great Trek. With their military technology, they overcame the local forces with relative ease, and formed several small Boer republics in areas beyond British control, without a central government.

From 1835 until 1838, Boer settlers started to cross the Vaal and they had several skirmishes with the Ndebele. On 16 October 1836, a Boer laager (or fortified circle of wagons) led by Andries Hendrik Potgieter, was attacked by an Ndebele force of about 5,000, who looted all of Potgieter's livestock, but were unable to defeat the laager in what became known as the Battle of Vegkop. One of the Sotho-Tswana chiefs, Chief Moroka of the Barolong people, who had earlier fled the Difaqane to the south to create the settlement of Thaba Nchu, sent fresh livestock to Potgieter to draw his party's wagons back to the safety of the Barolong stronghold of Thaba Nchu, where the Sotho-Tswana chief offered the Boers food and protection. By January 1837, an alliance of 107 Boers, sixty Rolong, and forty Coloured men, organised as a commando under the leadership of Potgieter and Gert Maritz, attacked Mzilikazi's settlement at Mosega, which suffered heavy losses, and early in 1838 Mzilikazi fled north beyond the Limpopo (to current day Zimbabwe), never to return to the Transvaal. Andries Hendrik Potgieter, after the flight of the Ndebele, issued a proclamation in which he declared the country which Mzilikazi had abandoned and forfeited to the emigrant farmers, but also denying land rights to the Sotho-Tswana who had saved him and assisted in the defeat of Mzilikazi and the Ndebele. After the retreat of Mzilikazi's Ndebele, many Boer farmers trekked across the Vaal and occupied parts of the Transvaal, bringing with them the laws of their Dutch forebears. These laws placed the native population under obligation to serve the farmers for a reasonable wage, prohibited them from possession of guns and ammunition and restricted their movements around the country.[3] Into these areas, still partly populated by remnants of the Ndebele and Sotho-Tswana, there was also a considerable immigration of members of the various Sotho-Tswana chiefdoms who had fled during the Difaqane.

Royal proclaiment on the right of the Kingdom of Sardinia to the island of Corsica


We, Carlo Alberto Amedeo di Savoia, King of Sardinia, Duke of Savoy, prince Csrignano and Piedmont, hereby proclaim that the island of Corsica, currently occupied by France, is rightfully part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. We recognize two reasons why our kingdom has a legitimize claim to the island of Corsica.

1) In the year of our lord 1297 His Holiness the Pope Boniface VIII established Regnum Sardiniae et Corsicae. His Holiness then proceeded to grant this fief to James II of Aragon. Through the machinations of politics the Kingsdom of Sardinia came into the hands of my forefather Vittorio Amedeo Sebastiano di Savoia, King of Sardinia, Duke of Savoy and Montferrat, Prince of Piedmon, marquis of Saluzzo and count of Aosta, Moriana and Nizza. Even though James II never took control of Corsica, His Holiness Boniface VIII ordained, in all his divine inspired wisdom, that Corsica and Sardinia should be part of a single kingdom. Since the title of this kingdom is rightfully ours, the island of Corsica should be on our control.

2) Since the 13th century the island of Corsica has been part of the Republic of Genua. In the year of our lord 1768 the island was temporarly granted to France, however the island stayed part of the Repiblic of Genua. It was not till 1811 that France transformed the island into one of its departments. Howere, the current regime of France at that time was illegitimate and so were its actions. The islans therefor never ceased to de facto belong to Genua. This means that when Genua was intergrated into the Kingdom of Sardink, with it came the rightful claim on Corsica. In other words the island of Corsica should be under our control.

well, He's king of piedmont in so far that Piedmont is part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Piedmont however is not a kingdom by itself but a principality. Hence, he is King of Sardinia, soevereign/prince of Piedmont (but soevereign sounds better )
