The European Union has been formed! The EU is a political and economic union between the French Algerian Republic, the Kingdom of Italy, the Sultanate of Lusitania, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Member states also agree to provide for each others mutual defense and to recognize, defend, and promote each others respective spheres of influence.

However, this alliance is not limited to the current members, and is always open to the possibility of admitting a new member into the fold.

Had it really been that long? Naranbataar simply couldn't believe it. Time passed quickly when one had so many duties to fill time - only the other day, he had negotiated a pact of mutual defense with the Borjigini's neighbour, China. Colonisation of the Sinkiang region was apparently going well, while progress on the construction of infrastructure in the Mongolian heartland was phenomenal.

It had been this busy all through the time Naranbataar had become the gurkhan of Borjiginia. The khan wondered if his distant ancestors - Kublai, Tolui, Genghis, Yesugei - had all felt the pressures of ruling a khanate. Truth be told, it was a glorious feeling... though not without its pressures.

'Great Khan! There are about twelve diplomats at the door, all clamouring too see you. Should I show them in?'

Naranbataar smiled, and prepared himself for the endless questions of the ambassadors. It was going to be a good day.

"In my defens God me defend," She whispered the words of the prayer quietly to herself as she knelt down in the vast church. "And bring my sawl to ane good end," It was silent but for the far off toll of the church bell and the distant singing of the priests, a serene environment where the Queen was able to feel detached from the world - away from the turbulent demands of a court designed for old men and politicians - here in the kirk could she knell and be at one with the almighty. "Ane vertuous lyf procureth ane happie death.." She always found that last line sobering, the idea that one day she would die and never again walk on this brave earth. Queen Marie Charlotte (for more information see here second post) was young; too young by many's reckoning, but to that she always replied by pointing out that the Emperor of France was only one year older than her and she really was quite bright.

A man approached from behind her, she knew who it was, he sighed and said in a sympathetic voice "Ye Cannea stay hie aw day lassie."

She turned to face the man and as she suspected it was Robert Douglas, one of the Noble Clansmen who had journeyed over the Atlantic to this place to restore the Monarchy. He was a very large man, with long hair and a bread. He looked quite out of place in this land of Jungle and tropics.

Marie Charlotte spoke to him in her soft voice as she stood up "Aye, Ah ken aht but ah daenea appretiate yon lairds. Thay thynke ah cannea be thair Queen. Thay daenea likit me."

"Ah nea," Douglas replied reassuringly, smiling broadly at the young girl who he had begun to feel was like a daughter to him, "Thay likit ye fine. Thea cam ower the faem juist for ye an thay'v hae gie ower awthing thay awnt."

"Aye, ye'r even." Marie Charlotte spoke in almost a whisper. Robert Douglas nodded and lead her out of the church to the halls where the noblemen would be waiting to hear from her as to policy and politics. Robert knew however that she didn't want to be there, he knew that she just wanted to sit in the kirk and pray. It had been the same ever since her travels in February. He was probably the only one that knew it, but he did, even if she herself did not; that she was in love.

Die Rheinland Industrie​

The great mineral wealth of the Rhine province furnished its most substantial claim to the title of the “richest jewel in the crown of Germany.” Besides parts of the carboniferous measures of the Saar and the Ruhr, it also contains important deposits of coal near Aachen. Iron ore was found in abundance near Coblenz, the Bleiberg in the Eifel possessed an apparently inexhaustible supply of lead, and zinc was found near Cologne and Aachen. The mineral products of the district also included lignite, copper, manganese, vitriol, lime, gypsum, volcanic stones (used for millstones) and slates. By far the most important item was coal. The mineral resources of the Rhine province, coupled with its favourable situation and the facilities of transit afforded by its great waterway, made it the most important manufacturing district in Germany. The industry was mainly concentrated round two chief centres, Aachen and Düsseldorf (with the valley of the Wupper), while there were naturally few manufactures in the hilly districts of the south or the marshy flats of the north. The largest iron and steel works were at Essen, Oberhausen, Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne, while cutlery and other small metallic wares were extensively made at Solingen, Remscheid and Aachen. The cloth of Aachen and the silk of Krefeld formed important articles of export. The chief industries of Elberfeld-Barmen and the valley of the Wupper were cotton-weaving, calico-printing and the manufacture of turkey red and other dyes. Linen was largely made at Gladbach, leather at Malmedy, glass in the Saar district and beetroot sugar near Cologne. Though the Rhineland was par excellence the country of the vine, beer was produced in quantities, distilleries were also numerous, and large quantities of sparkling Moselle were made at Coblenz, chiefly for exportation to Russia. Commerce was greatly aided by the navigable rivers, a very extensive network of railways, and the excellent roads constructed during the French régime. The imports consist mainly of raw material for working up in the factories of the district, while the principal exports are coal, fruit, wine, dyes, cloth, silk and other manufactured articles of various descriptions.

Sitting in one of the many royal palaces next to a window, giving a view of the docks of Almeria the soon-to-be Sultan pose for a portrait. From here he was to be rushed to court over where he would be crowned the ruler of the whole of Al-Andalus. Although without any formal powers it was clear to anyone within the country that the political party in control of the country would always be the Sultan's favourite. Much of the land also was owned by the Sultanate meaning they were never was low on money. Indeed, if it was not for the man being painted's grandad then there would be no prime-minister. However, the Sultan was becoming unpopular and the country was crumbling and so something had to be done.

The current prime minister,Mansur al-Undi, was waiting outside this room, leader of the pro-European party. He had spent much of his time trying to improve relations with other European nations as well as continuing the industrialisation of the nation. The painting finished he greeted the almost Sultan with the small bow. "How goes our industrialisation?" "Two more factories are set to be completed very soon." "very good, we will head to my late fathers Mausoleum to pay final respects before we head to the capital".

It was 6 o'clock in the afternoon. Christos had been reading some books before he slept in his office. His father, George I, had gone for a few months on his homeland, dennmark.

Christos, as a prince and heir to the manchurian throne, was to rule the country until the return of the king.

The prime minister, Mr. Jet Lee, was a Manchu that fought in the Manchu war of independence. He supports the danish dynasty and wants to make Manchuria a western European type kingdom. Although he too supports the re-creation of the Qing Dynasty he believes that Manchuria is not ready yet for war and that he should create a strong economy. Also since he is leader of the national party ( the only party) so he is prime minister for life.

Christos hates democracy, even one party democracy, while Mr Jet Lee may support the danish dynasty and respects the king, George I, but he thinks that Christos is nothing more than a bastard that cant rule the nation.

The prime ministers enters in the room with the foreign minister, Mr. Chiang, and the financial minister, Mr. Yuan.

Jet Lee, realy angry, replied << That is crazy!!!! We need to develop our economy!! I wont let this happen, i will call the King from denmark... >>

Christos was thinking << What a bastard. If it wasnt for my father he would have been executed >> . The he replied << Mr. Lee, shut up and calm down. What other options there are. >>

Mr. Chiang, the foreign minister was thinking that Christos wanted some great foreign success in order to saw his father that he can rule very well. Mr. Chiang said << We can spend money to persuade the warlords of Korea, one of the three territories with a huge manchu population, to join us. >>

After Jet Lee and his two ministers left the room, Lee said << What a bastard. Now we shall go to the senate and have a vote to see if the laws will pass or they wont pass. >>

Meanwhile Christos was watching the statue of the last Qing emperor and he was thinking << Soon i will become emperor, soon. >>

This was not dream only to the prince. All the manchu people live with the dream of re-creating the Qing Dynasty and retake benjing (thats how the manchus call peking).

A few days later at the senate the program passed with 250 of the 400 senators voting yes.

The Reign of Perseus Begins: 1825-1831

The reign of Perseus began after the 36-year old governor of the province of Cappadocia was elected by the Imperial Council to the Imperial throne by a narrow margin after George Constantine's death in 1825.

The Doctrine of Lapse/The Perseus Doctrine

Perseus realized that the Empire needed an efficient yet bloodless way to annex new lands and integrate those areas into the Empire. The Imperial Army during this time period was little more than a joke, and Perseus wasn't exactly of the warmongering sort of emperors either.

In 1827, Perseus came up with a plan to do just this. He issued a document known as the Doctrine of Lapse. The Doctrine of Lapse was what local rulers that pledged allegiance to the Empire had to submit to. The Doctrine basically stated that when the current ruler of a land under Byzantine influence died, his lands would be annexed by the Empire. At first, they would be given some degree of autonomy, with a governor either chosen by the previous ruler or elected, to help fully integrate these lands into the Imperial system, If the new governor refused to help the Empire, then all Byzantine economic ties with the lands in question would be cut, which would lead to total economic collapse in most areas due to already existing Byzantine economic domination. This threat was enough for the Empire's will to go unchallenged in these areas.

The first time the Doctrine of Lapse was used was in 1829, when Rhodes was annexed by the Empire. It worked almost perfectly, with the process of integration complete by 1831. While it was officially known as the Doctrine of Lapse, in many areas commoners would call it the "Perseus Doctrine" after the Emperor who created it. The reason it worked so well was that it would continue to give local ethnic and cultural groups power in their areas, without the risk of revolts and/or rebellion.

Prologue, Part II​

July 13th, 1826

Napoleon II stood with his Parti Patriote. The commander of the Coalition garrison had been steadily accruing more and more power. Napoleon II himself was little more than a figurehead, and it was painfully clear that the Governor-General, as he styled himself, would not relinquish his power when the time came. Discontent had simmered below the surface for some time, but the might of the occupiers had dissuaded any open rebellion. However, recent turmoil abroad had lead to the weakening of the Coalition's position within the Empire. Napoleon II and his allies realized this, and had been gathering support in secret for some time. The majority of the Quebecois, particularly the lower strata, by and large supported him. Arms had been imported, and the New Grand Army was ready to march.

It was of course, not grand, nor a real army. They were ill-equipped and poorly trained. But they were numerous, and distributed across all of the Empire. And the Coalition army stationed in Quebec wasn't exactly the best their nations could send; troops were sent to Quebec mostly as a form of punishment, and their morale, as well as knowledge of the local terrain, was low.

Napoleon II glanced once again at the Parti Patriote, who were anticipating a grand speech from their Emperor. He simply said "tomorrow... tomorrow... it begins."
