Is Lady GaGa the best pop musician since 2000?

I think N-SYNC disqualifies him from consideration, but I'll back you up on that one.

With stuff like autotune and the further digitization of music, I wouldn't be too surprised if "musicians" who couldn't sing or play an instrument started releasing albums in the near future (and maybe some already have?).

The studios are interested in a marketable image. If, due to technology, this means that the person doesn't necessarily have to have any musical skills, this expands their base of potential "artists" that they can make money with. Their main concern is maximized profits, so eventually they will go down this route.

Already we are seeing more and more "artists" lipsyncing at live events - something that is becoming more and more accepted in the industry. It's all about the image, really, musical skills be damned.

There's nothing new about this. When records first became popular they were the death knell for many existing acts which had relied primarily upon spectacular stage shows to mask the lack of singing talent. With records, artists had to actually be able to sing, and new stars emerged. The development and rise in importance of the music video in more recent decades has just meant a gradual reversion to the original situation rather than the appearance of a brand new one, I think, although the technological advances you mention might be exacerbating this.

Back to lady Gaga, she was on Jonathon Ross tonight- her interview was so dull, she was quite uninteresting in comparison to her onstage persona, i also found her a bit pretentious but maybe that was just me. Her performances were also quite poor but i don't know if that was just the tv.

I never thought I'd say I missed Britney Spears!

And I porbably never will :D but her & Christina Aguilera were way better than the current pop crop (Aguilera genuinely has a great voice).

I don't see how it could be debatable that she's a singer, whether or not one likes her singing.

Some people are singers, while others try to sing. While it would not be technically incorrect to refer to anyone singing (or trying to sing) as a singer, I must respectfully disagree. To me, it's like calling someone who works at burger king a chef, when a more accurate term might be 'cook.' While by definition a chef is nothing more than a professional cook, the term implies some degree of prestige. Since there is no common term to differentiate between a quality singer from an unskilled one, I tend to put 'singers' in a different class. Example, my next door neighbor is not a singer, though she may sing karaoke. I believe it's a knock on great singers to lump them in with the mediocre. Maybe I'm just looking too much into it though. :coffee:

I'm pretty sure she actually does write her own music.

BTW check out this video (there's many like them, so I just picked one random) :

Unless an album released in the year 2000 (Broken Bracelet, which IMO doesn't reeeeeeeeeally count) disqualifies her, I vote Michelle Branch.

If not, definitely Lady GaGa. :D

Katy Perry? James Blunt? The Fratellis? I also second Amy McDonald and Maroon 5.

edit: Mika!

I'm afraid Lady Gaga ("What kind of a name is that?" only qualifies because of what (and how much) she sells; musically there's nothing exceptional or even special about it.

She's very talented for a pop musician. I thought she was just a novelty act until my wife convinced me to listen to her albums. Holy crap, I know she's not the one producing those, but that's some of the best production work I've heard in a very very long time.

Production isn't musicality though.

You can't say anyone who sings a song which primarily consists of "under my umbrella-ella-ella hey hey hey" is talented.

Another production effect - and the song doesn't primarily consist of that, it's in the refrain.

You might all laugh at me, but Justin Timberlake is actually not that bad. Dude's got talent.

At production yes. I've never been really impressed by his voice or his persona.

Anyway, various artists have already been mentioned that certainly qualify as being better, but I guess she sells:

BTW, the leopardskin catsuit is by Viktor & Rolf. :p

Katy Perry's only heard of because she was pretending to be a lesbian to generate interest, James Blunt was a one hit wonder, The Fratellis are more rock than pop, I've never heard of Amy McDonald before. Maroon 5 are probably better if you consider them more pop than rock though.

AFAIK she's never claimed to be a lesbian, did she? But now that she's been mentioned, I'd definately put her above Lady GaGa :)

I've never heard of Amy McDonald before.
You should check her out then, for someone who's actually made it into the charts, she's pretty good :) Apparently she hasn't managed the jump across the pond (yet), though.

"I kissed a girl and I liked it" is pretending to be a lesbian for publicity, regardless of whether she ever claimed to be one.

I don't view songtexts (and taken out of context too) to be indicative of the artist's real persuasion....I don't assume Power Metal bands actually do slaughter dragons either :ack:

Does this mean Lady GaGa's actually a Paparazzi, since in the song she refers to Paparazzis as 'we'?

Slaying dragons or Lady Gaga being a paparazzi aren't anywhere near the same level of shock factor as zomg lesbian song.
