More and more news is coming in from protests in Sudan, a country neighbouring Egypt. It starts more or less the same as in Tunisia and Egypt with manifestations from students in capital Khartoum against the current Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir. The protests gain a rapid response on social network sites such as facebook and twitter.

Do you think this will escalate and will more countries follow in the footsteps of Tunisia and Egypt?

I hope so, than Yemen, Syria, Libya, Jordan, Algeria, Oman, Mauritania, Koweit, and all other countries ruled by dictators or absolute monarch. Arab people need to move towards more democracy.

Are we talking North or South Sudan?

This. But I doubt democracy will rise from the ashes.

I think it is North, but everything was sparked after a referendum in the south where the result was that the people from Southern Sudan wanted an independent state from Northern Sudan. See the timeline in my 3rd link above.

If they weaken themselves we can always step in and bring democracy in exchange for oil.

Is there a risk of a Pan-Arab Islamist Republic over all the countries being set up ?

In before the Neocons on the forums claim some credit. Hell, in before the Libs claim some credit also.

Sudan's government perpetrated Darfur, didn't it?

Yeah, let's hope they are next. Confucius say karma's a pain!

Plus, isn't China on good terms with Sudan? More reason to get rid of their government. ;)

I hope for you, your portfolio has some oil company stock in it. A barrel of crude oil peaked above USD 100 today, the highest bid since oct 2008.

Unfortunately no, but that just goes to show that at least one group is profiting from all this chaos - the rest of us are being screwed over by it though.

...wonder what the effects of a giant Arab revolt would be...

The result of the referendum regarding South Sudan's independence was announced yesterday. If Sudan have to extinguish fires in their own country any plans to make a fuss about the referendum hopefully gets cancelled/postponed.

The price of the oil will probably rise, because the shareholders will want to invest in crude oil.
But if the Suez Canal can keep operating without much problems I don't think think we will be without oil any time soon. Many oil companies have oil tankers on the oceans for when prices rise, so they can sell at the right moment. On all oceans combined there is probably still a year worth of oil in oil tankers. When that runs out, a new government will have settled in.
