OK is the Us more homphobic in it's leaning than say the UK or Spain or whatever? If so in what way and if not why not?

Sorry about the last pole. Total mess?

Well if your comparing it to only those two countries il have to reluctingly say yes.

But i dont think americans are homophobic in general. Some may not approve of the lifestyle but they arent homophobic.

Thanks for pointing that out on both threads, can we proceed now :)

Im pretty sure that you are already know/believe we are more homophobic and the answer is pretty obvious. So why ask?

I'm sorry but this appears to be another "lets talk about things that are wrong with America and how much better Europe is" thread rather than "someone actually wanting to know an answer to a good question" kind of thread.

Shhh! As long as we keep them focused on our "problems" and convinced of their own superiority, they'll never work to improve themselves and we will remain the world's sole superpower. Mwahaha. Mwhaha-ha. MWHAHA-HA-HA!

Actually I was more interested in the perception, and yes I do think per capita there are more homophobes in the US than say France or Germany. If it was just a what is wrong with the US thread I'd of just said I think the US are generally more bigotted and not bothered with the pole. Touch defensive aren't we?

Generally I'm anti US government(no really I kid you not :)) Certainly not anti US, quite the opposite we Brits and the US get along swimmingly. IF you want to take it as an inditement of you personally as an american by all means go ahead, but it's intended to see if there is a perception or a reality in this attitude particularly from US citizens point of views or a perception this is not the case or that certain groups tend towards this attitude, i.e cultures, religous groups, higher classes, middle classes, University students, the KKK, Mexicans you know what ever :D Not to cast blame on the Evil monster of the US.

I'm genuinely curious?

When I said whatever that meant generally not just those two countries.

By homphobic I mean do they discriminate in there thoughts and deeds or do they tend to put them down or call them evil or whatever more than say western countries do, you know the traditional meaning of homophobia. I would use another word for bigotry but there isn't one except of course bigotry and that's a bit more blatant. I wanted something a bit less emotive.

I'd say that as a non-US citizen it certaianlly does seem more intolerant of homosexuals that the UK and large partes of Europe.

Of course we have our fair share of intolerants in Europe, particuarly in places like Italy and Span wher ethere are strong religious groupings, but generally the liberal view of Gays come sout on top here whilst in the US the conservatives often seem to get their way on the issue and that there seems to be alot more hostility towards gays in the US.

Sorry to hear about your messed up pole. Maybe a look into the Babe Thread can help? :p ;)

On topic: American politicians seem to use homophobia more balantly, but i don't think the general populance is more homophobic than the average Europeans.

Among teenagers, calling somebody "gay" is considered an insult in Germany as well.
Adults tend to be more diplomatic, but that doesn't mean an out-of-closet gay is considered normal. A gay major was constant subject of ridicule for months, after his "comming out".

Obviously you disguised your intent with a seemingly innocent question.;)

Touch defensive aren't we?

I wouldn't care if there wasn't "lets poke America with a stick and make it squirm thread" posted every 30 minutes.

But what ever floats your boat. America is obviously more right-winged than Europe so thusly we are probably not the most tolerant toward gays and lesbians when compared to Europe. Spain, Portuagl, and Italy being an exception.

America is, in my opinion, one of the most welcoming to homosexuals out there. I'm not going to hate my country for it, but I will strongly oppose our welcoming of them.

:king: Go Xenaphobia!

God... what is it with you christians! Your full of contradictions.

In fact why wouldnt you welcome them? Isnt christianity about trying to get others to repent for thier sins? If gays are actually sinners you should welcome them and try to change them.

I'm a bad Christian:p I'm one who doesn't welcome sinners into my home.:)

xenophobia is a fear of foreigners, it's hard to see how you'd stop the immigration of homosexuality into the US anyway, what you going to do show them curtain swatches and see if they pick beige or taupe or chartreusse instead of blue green and red.

Or get them to run and see if they look vaguely ifeminate?

Well according to our computers gayometer that light jiggle and the extended left hand is 67% gay.:)

Sir have you or have you ever considered having sex with a man?

I'm not sure how to answer that but play your cards right and your next *blows kiss*

Ok Bob put this one back on the next plane out.

Sir my Gaydar meter reading is showing a slight increase above average in gayness on flight 709, should we alow them entry sir?

Ok Lt. scramble a gay escort to bring them down where the more dubious characters can be rigorously pumped for gay leanings.

EDIT: actually xeno phobia literally means fear of aliens but its the same thing.

We should also include Japan, South Korea and China in this comparison. I would appreciate it if some East Asian posters would discuss homophobia in their nations. (I'm not suggesting that it will necessarily turn out that they are more homophobic... I just want to know)

China, Japan and Korea are all developed nations I see no reason why not? It was more to exclude countries where there was no comparison really between the US and them.

:rotfl: This is truly brilliant!

Even though there are just as much gay people in Saudi Arabia, they are very looked down upon. Some people are tolerant because they believe it is natural, the rest of the majority, however, would not allow it.

There was a story about some religious fundamentalist police arresting 3 gay people because they were caught 'in the act' or something, and the local court ordered there execution.

Please USA, don't become Saudi Arabia, that is the trend I'm noticing here.

That sounds pretty extreme.

Right now i can only think of two crimes that you can get executed for here.

MURDER and treason.

I dont see that changing anytime soon. Really its just hype and paranoia when people compare the U.S to a police state or a fascist state w/e.

EDIT: I accidently said rape and treason... Good thing i edited that fast! Ive been reading the rape thread.

The US is a big place, and the mid-west and deep south are far different from New England....

Non-US citizen, and the parts I've visited of the US I'd say were more receptive & accomodating of gays than the UK. 'Course, I did grow up in Scotland, which for the most party is as socially enlightened a place as Kansas....
