ISDG 2012 - Server Announcements, Connection Issues and Questions

Another thunderstorm indeed. *sigh*

Game is back up, reloaded from latest RB Autosave 05.06.2013 12:42 CEST.

I paused the game, as I am the only to have connected to the game since the reload and four other teams still have to play their turn.

Was in the game playing our turn when I lost the connection. Cannot access the game now.

edit - check that - can now. :)

I want to ask whoever of the RB turnplayers is not set-up his firewall settings to do so, because it is inconvenient for us to not be able to join when he is in. Also, it is inconvenient to be forced to log out just so he can log in.

My Internet connection is temporarily down. Should be back within the hour.

From a theoretical standpoint: It's probably not a simple fix and might not even be just the fault of one of the people involved's firewall, but both firewalls.

There are a handful of different people who log in as RealmsBeyond - could you give a time (by civstats) when this has happened so we can try to pinpoint who it could be? Or if you can't remember, if it happens again in the future please post here with a civstats screenshot.

Its kjnoren who was complaining he cant log in when we have a player of ours in the game. I guess he is the one who needs tuning of the settings.

The game should be connectable again now.

I also have the connection trouble with one player of RB. The issue may come from its firewall but also from its router if he has one.

I dived into my (ISP-issued) router and tweaked some settings there, which hopefully will help some. That said, peer-to-peer network connections through firewalls are fraught with problems and issues. Every connection to the game includes at least two parts - I find blaming only the one and say "fix it" to be disingenuous and unhelpful, especially given the state of my "complaining".

Dont take it personal, man I dont even know you. No one is blaming you do something bad on purpose or need to defend or be ashamed of something. There is a technical problem and it will be best to be solved.

As for how I know that the problem is not with our turnplayers setup, I judge from deductive logic. We log in to the game when other turnplayers are online just fine. Just as others are joining when any of our turnplayers is online. Plus, this is not the only pitboss game where our turnplayers are playing and it is practically proven that they connect just fine with other peoples. Also, sometimes RB turnplayer loggs just fine with other people online, so I deduct that those must be different players playing turns for RB and one or more (but not all) of them have problems with the setup. Thats all.

BTW, Wahl-profi from The Germans also may need firewall/router tuning.

Let me just spit in here that the problem may even be related to my router, and incompatibility between my router and kjnoren's router. In which case it is not possible to resolve this. Firewalls are a very complex technical implementation, and it's not without reason that you have to take up years of study to become a certified expert on how they interact with one another.

Tl;Dr : This may not be possible to solve.

not to mention that its a ancient game (nearly 8 years old), with a pitboss that at times feel somewhat tacked on at the end of the process, with a mod on top of it which might-might not have something to do with it as well (haven't code dived into it so can't tell) ...

or it might be one or more routers (not all of them necessarily within maintainence access of the players themselves, such as if its parked at their ISP) that does the deal, with incomparable firewall/port access setup ...I know that at my previous ISP i couldn't connect to Pitboss at all because of how they had set up their network ... To be frank we should be happy that its still running as smooth as it does

Firewall config : must allow port 2056, 26900 and 6500, protocol UDP and TCP, direction in and out, from and to any IP address.
Router config : must redirect port 2056, 26900 and 6500, protocol UDP and TCP, from any IP address to your PC IP address.
Your PC IP address must not change. If it does, you have to configure your router to permanently give the same IP address to your PC.

If all of this is OK, I have no idea of where the trouble comes from.

And that's almost worse - there is no single canonical source on exactly which ports that a Civ 4 pitboss client need, and which the server need. Gamespy has the most comprehensive list, but it includes all the ports that Gamespy uses, which aren't relevant here.

I too am having problems connecting with a RB player who is logged in this evening at about this time (10.10 PM eastern north america (GMT-5)).

I can connect to the peer no problem, but then get hung up on the finishing screen. I have tried several times now. Given that I now have to crash (ie go to bed), this is a bit frustrating. I have a reallllllly busy day tomorrow.

Failure to connect to a "RealmsBeyond" peer exactly now. This may help to identify who at RB is preventing other player to connect.
Regarding my own configuration, I have added all the port listed in the link of 2metraninja to my firewall and router config.
